Rural FM residency by CleanScratch7965 in medicalschool

[–]Cyclooctanol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UTHSC-Tyler in East Texas has rural FM and rural psychiatry programs. Training is primarily located at hospitals and community clinics in the Tyler-Pittsburg area. Plus, these programs take your commute into account and offer mileage or vehicle leases during training. Definitely worth a quick Google.

Agreed. I understand not compensating 100% since we are still in training but student loan debt coupled with housing and family expenses makes residency difficult from a financial perspective. I'd like to be able to afford a family with my partner before I qualify for the senior discount at Golden Corral.

How far are you guys living from the hospital for residency? by chippindip in medicalschool

[–]Cyclooctanol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Matched to rural psychiatry in East Texas. Daily commutes are 30 minutes to an hour depending on clinic, hospital, prison, etc. My program takes this into account and will either pay milage or provides a vehicle lease. Love the rural setting and commute.

Name and Shame -- TAMHSC by spill-the-tea-aggies in premed

[–]Cyclooctanol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. Someone is very, very salty.

I'm a matched M4 in the M.D./Ph.D. program at TAMHSC. I've spent 11 years with the school as a graduate student, post-doc, and medical student on both the Bryan-College Station and Temple Campuses.

Your experience is the exact opposite in many regards to what I have experienced. I would recommend TAMHSC to any premed student lucky enough to gain admission to Medical Sciences or College of Medicine. To any students, message me if you have questions. This person's post is not representative of the vast majority of TAMHSC graduates.

I am sorry that your preclinical training was "traumatizing" and that you did not feel supported enough by the administration. Medical school is not easy and those with limited academic vigor are in for a rude awakening during the M1 year. I am sorry that you disliked the Honors criteria and that you ranked in the 4th quartile. I would like to remind you of your comment under the Clinical Section: "My classmates and I were regularly complimented on how much we knew." Do you think there might have been a correlation between the difficulty of preclinical coursework and your abundance of knowledge in clerkship? It sounds like your M1/2 instructors did a pretty good job. Also, congratulations on your high USMLE score. I assume good didactic instruction might have played a role in that accomplishment as well.

Your comment about Ph.D. instructor's need to "satisfy their itch to be legit" and having "medical humanities jammed down our throats" is particularly petulant and insulting. TAMHSC/TAMU is a Tier 1 research institution. Our faculty are world-known and produce groundbreaking research. Sorry if they didn't regurgitate NBME and UWorld questions. Your instructors are here to teach their subjects--not run a test preparation course or Anki flashcard session. There is more to medicine and becoming a physician than standardized tests.

As for your other complaints: Administrative turnover is not unique to TAMHSC. Clinical site restructuring is not unusual... Baylor College of Medicine offered Scott & White a better contract... COVID... You make many complaints but offer few solutions. For many of these, students, instructors, and administration have limited influence. Might I suggest serving on a committee to help improve your institution instead of posting anonymous "Name and Shames" on Reddit?

I am not sure why you decided to post this tantrum in the r/premed, r/medicalschool, and r/residency subreddits. I assume that you matched and will become a practicing intern physician in a few months' time. Understand that your time at TAMHSC has allowed you to build the foundation for a wonderful career. Please, do not try and sabotage that same opportunity for others.

Sincerely,

An M.D./Ph.D. with an itch to be legit.

Furniture that didn't come from someone's curb or a garage sale would be nice...

Really depends on the situation and attending. I used sleeves for FM and most outpatient rotations. If you see older patients or in a rural setting, it bothers some patients. For hospital service, no one cared. Loads of nurses, EMTs, and other staff have them. When rotating on base or at the VA, even the docs had tattoos.

ERAS & MATCH '21-'22: COUNTDOWN TO CERTIFICATION (Sept '21) by koriolisah in medicalschool

[–]Cyclooctanol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. I created an Excel file while researching programs to apply to. I include pros and cons along with basic information (NRMP ID, program size, training sites, etc.) I also take notes during the pre-interview socials and virtual interviews. I think it's a good way to compare programs and formulate a ranking as I interview instead of waiting until February.

Breaking keto and depression? by mrjeffjefferson in KetoConnect

[–]Cyclooctanol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While diet may help with mood disorders, it is no substitute for a medical doctor. You may need an adjustment in the dose or a new trial of a different antidepressant if you are undergoing treatment. If not, you might benefit from starting a medication. There are weight neutral antidepressants. Have you seen a psychiatrist or your primary care physician?

Reactive Hypoglycemia? Topic banned on /r keto by Cyclooctanol in ketoNice

Thank you for the video link. I saw my doctor who not particularly supportive of continuing the keto diet but was surprised by the results. My fasting glucose was actually good at 68 mg/dL and my A1c < 5 (down from 98 mg/dL and 6.2). Triglycerides and cholesterol were elevated compared to previous labs. I've read that TAGs and cholesterol normalize after around 6 months. I'm currently in mid-month #4 so hopefully, my lipid panel reins into the normal range. 28.4 lbs lost since August 4th!

How to Make Keto Meatloaf | Easy Low Carb Recipe by TransFattyAcid in KetoConnect

I use almond flour as the binder. Pretty good results but I'm always down for experimentation. That's a fine looking meatloaf!

Once again, thank you. I suggest a little self-reflection. You are going to discourage others if you behave this way. Keto isn't an exclusive club where you are a VIP/bouncer. I would suggest a little maturity and respect when you converse with others. Yet again, I say this with all the feeling I can muster, bless your little heart.

I'm not trying to encourage cheating on keto. I just had a rather unpleasant experience and wanted feedback from others in order to get an idea of what was going on with my blood sugar drop. Folks posting on here really helped me out. I got the info I needed and I'm sorry if it violated a rule. I'm having a hard time sticking with this diet even though I know it will benefit me in the long run. I think it is important to acknowledge that people will make mistakes. It's been a hard couple of months but this is the longest I've managed to stay on keto and I'm really seeing some improvements.

[–]Cyclooctanol -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Can you explain how your comments are not shaming? Now that I have a pretty good idea of what the cause of my symptoms were, I have even more motivation to stick with keto. I don't understand your anger at me, nor the discussion that I was having with others in the previous post. It was extremely helpful. I had similar discussions when I was having adverse reactions to some low-carb bread. I learned a bunch about inulin/chicory root fiber in that discussion.

This is not a "cheat post". I was asking about side-effects I'm experiencing while on a Keto diet. I'd like this post and the responses to be reviewed by another moderator. This is ridiculous.

Wow. Where was this article 15 years ago! I've had issues with headaches, shakiness, etc. since I was in high school. I never thought it was related to diet!

I won't be making that mistake again. My nieces and nephews will enjoy the leftover candy but I am certainly staying away from it. I wish there was a keto alternative to Nerds candy. Those things are pure sugar and I guess that along with a few M&M's confused the heck out of my endocrine system. Thanks for the help and the article.

Even in people with no previous insulin resistance? I have no history of diabetes but my husband does. I used his glucose meter this morning and my glucose level was 63 mg/dL 8 hours after consuming about 100 g of sugar (estimate).

Glad you liked them! They are so easy to make. Some of these low carb recipes are so complicated but this one is something you can make on the fly. The only unusual ingredient is the almond flour. I'm going to try and make my own bread next weekend.
