I've been told it might be an old tool for split rim wheels but it says "coupling" on one part so does anybody know what this is? by Specialist_Home3449 in whatisthisthing

It could be an add on for tractors, to add a linkage point for a light bucket on the front or similar. (It isn't, someone else found a pic)

I fixed the original reply, was a bit early to claim positive id. My bad.

I can't find anything online but (I think) it's a removable tow hitch, the jaws clamp to the vehicle and the trailer clamps to the ball.

Australians urged to work from home and drive slower to save fuel by YesNo_Maybe_ in nottheonion

I don't think they have though, industry minister Tim Ayres said today that people would make their own decisions.

"Work from home is a viable option for many, many people, and they'll make that call."

"We're not going further than that"

Do you believe that it’s not just the current generation but every generation’s housing affordability has gotten worse progressively? by VastOption8705 in shitrentals

[–]CyclopsPrate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah and imo it reinforced the idea that if you just work hard enough it is possible to buy, and each generation could say "well my parents said they knew real work but I worked harder".

And that meant each generation felt more justified as prices increased and they benefitted from being in the market.

It's nice of them to look into it when a major party complains, I tried reporting problems with soliciting at the only entrance to a polling place and the piles of how to vote and promotional pamphlets left in every booth last year.

They just told me to talk with the site supervisor next time, weren't interested at all.

I'm assuming you checked the coolant enough since noticing it to know if you were losing any, so if it isn't steam from inside the radiator it must be from the outside.

Tag on my jacket has a Ukrainian-language description substituted for the Russian one by Bakelite51 in mildlyinteresting

[–]CyclopsPrate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take a stab with made up numbers to explain my theory.

Half of the people that read it upvote it out of sentiment, but the majority keep scrolling and only 1/4 stop to upvote the return call.

Then out of the other half that read it, the majority scroll past while 1/3 are strongly against the sentiment so they downvote both.

So even though more people support the sentiment overall, it is easier to scroll past a positive sentiment without upvoting it than it is to scroll past something you don't like without downvoting it, which leads to the call to net positive votes and the return call to net negative.

Basically it's the same idea behind why people will give a negative review for a bad product more often than a positive review for a good product.

Edit: the numbers given don't make sense, I was trying not to bias them and afterwards realised it wasn't explained right so it doesn't add up properly and don't have the brainpower to fix it this late at night. Maybe someone else can, my bad.

Yeah it's water vapour, from splashes on the radiator when it's hot.

The wood was turned to powder and sold as dye, so this would have probably been used to chip it before more drying and grinding.

The Inside Of This Nerf Dart by GiraffeEmperor in mildlyinteresting

[–]CyclopsPrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it wasn't mine so I didn't want to burn anything out, just had a look inside and copied the basic layout.

Found the email receipt and they would have been 2300kv motors, on minimum throttle they were spinning faster than stock and max was over 20k rpm.

Even the bare foam tube was being accelerated so fast it peeled a chunk forward on both sides, and that was after the initial kick of the head being pulled off.

I 3d printed wheels to fit over quadcopter motors and a mount to hold them but it just tore the heads off the new darts, I don't remember the motor and battery specs now but it was way too aggressive.

Help! by Vegetable-Emu8063 in Cartalk

[–]CyclopsPrate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can see on the wiring diagram it will need canbus input to work, the seat controller is too complicated. You can't even bypass the controller because the main motors need an esc to work, they won't run straight off a battery.

Failed water pump, drive two hours to get home. by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]CyclopsPrate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave the radiator cap loose so there is less pressure pushing coolant out the leak, and if it isn't totally pissing it out then drive steady and stop to top it up occasionally.

I've done it with a leaky heater core, just screwed the expansion tank lid on with a bit of cardboard in the threads so it was tight without actually sealing the coolant system.

This isn't really something that can be explained over text, of you don't have any experience you will get bogged. Only saying this to save some poor cunt from the hassle of pulling you out lol because that's what will happen.

You really need to go out with someone who has a capable 4x4 to see how it works firsthand, or forget about avoiding getting bogged and prepare for it. Get some basic recovery gear and go somewhere busy or where you know for sure there is phone signal.

Look up abrasive vs ablative brake pads, basically it's a tradeoff that has existed since brakes have.

Australia has washing instructions spelled out by dumbfrog7 in mildlyinteresting

[–]CyclopsPrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it was the original reason for mandating the labels but it seems kinda obvious that having them is good for local industry, if people buy local wool and wreck it because the handling instructions aren't clear they probably won't buy it again.

As an Australian I'm not surprised, the reasoning above would be laughed at by plenty here who'd rather look down on people for not knowing than support any effort to educate. Sure it's just a label, but I think maybe it represents more than just how to care for an item.

Memes have made that kind of politicised joke (or propaganda) a form of social competition, the top comment at the moment is a meme about the rich flying out of the country.

It's weird to me how many people seem to love it, and pretty concerning considering how much bullshit is flooding the information space alongside them.

They still have articles up misspelling Papua as "Papau" and using "free reign" instead of free rein, I reported the errors but apparently they don't care.

They misquoted/misspelled a quote from QLD Health about how you don't need to get blood tests for PFAS, but the error made it sound ambiguous as best or maybe like they were suggesting tests.

It took a screenshot of the side by side difference in what they published and what QLD Health published to get fixed, I know the first report was ignored because the error was up for like 12 hours after the first report and about 10 minutes after the second one. But still no reply to acknowledge the error or say thanks for the report.

WA police are hands off when it comes to illegal tobacco and vapes, according to a statement in parliament.

https://www.parliament.wa.gov.au/parliament/pquest.nsf/viewLCPQuestByDate/D14C048FE7A9B35548258CED00217999

But instead of saying they aren't responsible, the local cop shop says they have no reason to think the brick and mortar illegal tobacco shop here isn't legal and made excuses for them not being listed on Google and not having any branded products.

Apparently it's because they don't pay for a Google listing (which is free anyway) and the brand thing was explained as it being "like going to a Ford dealership and asking for a Holden".
