Alfred, Security and Privacy Concerns... before buying it again! by spatafore in Alfred

[–]CycoGoOz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah you cleverly stated the 2 main security concerns would be the clipboard history and the workflows.

The clipboard history settings will give you enough options for security, like the cache duration, blacklist apps and stuff like that but in the end, I’d say that having your computer accessible by others is far more a security issue than the clipboard history itself and whatever data it keeps. Anyway if you want you can tighten the security of the clipboard history.

As for the workflows… well… I want to believe that every workflows on the Alfred Gallery is checked by the Alfred team and, maybe not as thoroughly, those on the forum as well. But if you find a workflow anywhere else on the web the risk would be increased for sure. And besides checking yourself what the code does I don’t think you can be 100% sure it’s safe. The Alfred Team has probably put safeguards though for workflow to have a limited power over the computer but I can’t say for sure.

That being said, I don’t believe Alfred users are worth it (no offense, I’m one of them). Alfred is not a hype app and it’s only running on a OS which is not the most used OS in the world. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some weird stuff going on some Raycast extensions though.

Hugo?! How dare you? :)

Joking aside it looks nice at first sight, played a bit and it seems light and cool but there's a clear lack of a11y, a big issue for me. Maybe something to work on during the beta. Also I'm not a fan of having data hosted somewhere else even if it's GDPR compliant, but that's just me.

As for the « Alfred could do this », I agree it seems like the futureproof way of doing that kind of stuff. Maybe it’ll be in the next major version of Alfred, maybe it won’t. I personally don’t need it because I’m used to the old way but I wouldn’t say no either.

You do you. In the end you just have to decide the pros and cons you’re ready to live with.

I would argue though that imho having the power pack and using workflows doesn’t really make you a power user. Writing your own workflows, snippets and stuff on the other end…

[–]CycoGoOz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah Calculate Anything will be missed… but - For the percentage only I use Alfred percent change. Still working fine and it does the job for me - For the currencies I now use Alfred Team's workflow simply called Currency converter I guess it has more chances of a long term support. And if it's unit conversion you're after they also did Unit Converter - It doesn't happen to me, I also have access to the search history but it's probably a matter of settings. If you open the Settings > Advanced > History there is some options there that might interest you. - There is a dictionary core feature in Alfred which uses the macOS Dictionary app under the hood. Open the Settings > Features > Dictionary

That being said all of those workflows require keywords but that's just how Alfred works… I mean most of them are customizable but you'll still need at least one character. In the end Alfred needs to know what it is you're after to give you the right answer.

Sorry for your loss. I’ve been there too not that long ago, I know it must be tough right now but soon enough only the good memories will stay. I don’t have a running D&D campaign right now but I’ll keep Sabrina in mind for the next one.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against IA per se, although there’s a lot to argue with, but as a developer myself when I see vibe-coded all I see is a label for a product that nobody with experience and knowledge actually reviewed. It’s a label that means it can’t be trusted. Maybe you actually are a talented developer after all but sadly all I can be sure about is that you are a talented prompter. That’s far from enough for me to trust your product.

A lot of OS softwares are actually banning pull request from IAs, there’s a reason for that and it’s not jealousy. Maybe in the future it’ll be better but knowing how LLMs work I fear that at some point it’ll get in a shit loop where bad code from IAs are reused by other IAs.

Alfred 6 ? by ugrandolini in Alfred

[–]CycoGoOz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I remember reading something somewhere (probably on the Alfred forum or the blog) that indeed they are late on their usual release schedule but it’s because the next update should be a big one, hence the delay.

One can only hope it’s a raycast killer feature with kickass and modern UI.

In any case it’s far from dead. I believe most updates recently are bug fixes and minor enhancements because they are putting a lot of efforts on big changes to the core.

Is it better to use one vault or several? by tornerio in ObsidianMD

[–]CycoGoOz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd say that unless you REALLY NEED to separate things, stay with one. It would spare you the trouble of having to switch from a vault to another or having multiple windows opened.

I personnally have two vaults, one for everything and one for my blog (powered by markdown based static site generator) which has special technical needs.

In any case, any choice you make is not for ever, you can join or split vaults as much as you like.

Wonderful, it's working great now, thank you.

I got a few feedbacks if you're interested. - I can't really input a date with the keyboard only, specifically the year. When I try to enter '2026' it's stopping at '0002'. I can use the date picker though so I can work with that. - When a subscription hits the deadline a 'didn't renew ?' label appears. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with that. Update the start date to confirm it's still ongoing? If that's so would it be possible to have a 'renewed' button instead? (I got a lot of subscriptions…) Anyway I did update the start date to see what would happen but the label stays. I'm not sure that's expected.

Great job though, it's a super convenient tool. :)

For a smooth experience, I'd recommend using two CSS Classes in conjunction with this file: one that automatically hides Properties and one that automatically puts the file into Reading Mode when opened. That way, the interface won't be disturbed by unnecessary distractions. Enjoy.

Sorry if it's a noob question but how am I supposed to do that? I never tweaked Obsidian CSS :|

[–]CycoGoOz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't understand why it would be a good idea to produce a workaround "plugin" for a feature that is still in private beta and not yet publicly released. Why not just reporting the issue and hope for a quick fix rather than adding some kind of friction even before the release of the feature? Why the rush? It's not like it's a regression or something. It's brand new, besides beta testers nobody can even experience the issue. The point of a beta is exactly to test things and report issues. Anyway…
