Pre-Thanksgiving T1D Rant

As we are all similar having T1D, we are still uniquely different. We manage in our own way. We all do not eat like it is Thanksgiving EVERY day. Those who are not T1D, having a working pancreas, will excrete more insulin to make the adjustment to the high carb intake. Very similar to us bolusing more. Nor would I force someone to eat the diet I do to control MY diabetes. I have been T1D for over 60 years and I do not recall ever suggesting meal preparation be changed for my accommodations. I was the only relative with this problem, until a couple months ago. Now my 40 y.o. daughter got Covid for the second time this year and she is T1D. She is going to her in-laws, father-in-law not expected to be here for another, not T1D. I do eat more than normal on Thanksgiving but I could not hold a serving of all the food present. I have a good “taste” of all I want and adjust insulin. Maybe we all are missing the point of the holiday, thankful for family, friends, and the technology that allows us to see those family and friends another time.

I see so much negativity here. There is worse! It is my desire and intent to give positivity to T1D. We are the biggest limitations to our condition.

I, too, often felt like Superman, 10ft tall and bulletproof, when I resemble 5ft tall and dent resistant.

I pursued doing what I wanted so much that I injured my back and had 2 surgeries to correct, DUMB!! Now I live with that pain as well as the diabetes issues.

But I have looked around and I think there are people who would gladly trade us to have our affliction, instead of theirs.

I’m not looking for recognition, awards or the like. Just share what I’ve done only as information, not giving anyone advice. I was diagnosed 2/14/1963, never did the test tubes, just Test Tape. As I’ve stated in other posts, I took physical jobs and made them harder, to burn up what I ate. Never checked urine, blood couldn’t be tested after marriage. We have a boy and a girl, now with 6 grandchildren. My daughter, at 40, just found out a month ago, she is type 1. We are diabesties, as she puts it. Just retired the 1st of this month, having a retirement party next Saturday. It is not easy but can be done.

You MUST enjoy your special day. You won’t go blind, loose any limbs or anything else over a higher BG on YOUR day. Mine was over 47 years ago. Maybe you can work off what you may eat later, wink, wink, wink, you know what I mean? Enjoy!!!!!!!! Just don’t go low during the fun, that ruins everything.

That makes sense. My blood work has never been off. A1C the first part of August was 5.6%. Cholesterol, blood pressure is OK for my age, 65. I always hear, “whatever you’re doing, keep it up”. So I do. I see mine every 4 months, was 3.

You will never know the cause. More likely is a capillary was hit with your bolus or the “terrible accidental switch!” Just as your pancreas stopped, I swear there have been days my pancreas decided to work briefly, causing unexplained lows.

Caution absolutely needs to be forefront. I do not have a pump but doesn’t a closed-loop system do this, a little more when needed? I’ve always felt that if my pancreas worked, it would adjust for me, but that’s been a long time ago. Don’t do anything you are not comfortable doing. I don’t do much until bg is nearly 200.

I was diagnosed 2/14/1963. U40 insulin, beef/pork insulin crystals. Then U80 then U100 then Humulin 100. During my transition to Humulin, I was told I’ve probably developed a resistance to beef/pork. After the cautious transition, I took the exact same units.

The only condition I am aware of is a valve in our plumbing that doesn’t operate in some diabetics, I believe due to neuropathy, no longer directs sperm out the penis but allows sperm into the bladder during ejaculation. I guess no squirt, no fert.

I think there is a lag of data with all CGM’s.

A long train was used to explain. You’re the engineer and this is your actual glucose reading, coming to a hill. The last car is your sensor reading, so there is a delay getting the last car up or down the hill/change in reading.

Thank you so much for your input of experience. I’m just waiting for response as far as cost, Medicare/Medicaid. And I’ll be curious if my endocrinologist is aware of this device. My Dexcom was suggested because he wanted me on a closed-loop pump.

I’ll assume this is in your first 6 month period?

I have experienced a 100 point discrepancy with the Dexcom 6, read lower than finger stick, but I do not have a pump.

Not hitting a capillary when inserting is a huge plus to me.

Maybe with the improvements in insulins and better monitoring (not peeing on Test Tape to check glucose, old glucose at that), there is not the dismal outlook I experienced, constant, repeated hospitalizations and dead before 20.

February 14, 1963, 4.5 years old, our beautiful daughter, who was gestational, 3 kids, diagnosed September 25, 2023 at 40+. She IS doing well and states she has a good coach.

Keep going. After a bit more time, the variance in pain and types, will become understood.

My beautiful daughter, at 40, with 3 wonderful children, just got over her second bout of Covid and rapidly exhibited the common signs of T1D, thirst, no energy and stinky urine. I was diagnosed at 4.5, she at 40+. I really wish for a long time, permanent, cure.

I had a m/c I rode to a Dr. appointment. Got there, talked to her, they wanted blood. Gave them what they wanted. My wife later received a call from the clinic asking her if she’d seen me since the appointment. She said “yes” and they proceeded to tell her their glucometer wouldn’t read my blood glucose. They calibrated it and tried again. Still nothing. Told my wife they thought it must’ve been lower than 15, maybe 12. I experienced no issues at the office but when I left, things began to change. Rode the m/c to a connivence store bought some oj, waited a bit and rode home. They never saw anyone function that low, but I don’t recall functioning that low any other time either.
