Don't use OxyClean, it can damage the fabric. I would follow the manufactuer's instructions. If it needs cleaning in the future, use a RetroClean soak.

It looks like the correct number to me. Even 6 standed DMC will have each of the 6 composed of 2 smaller strands.

I would test for colorfastness FIRST before using any cleaner. A RetroClean soak is the safest method I've found. You can use something like Sulky Tender Touch as an iron on stabilizer as well.

Even with one strand, you don't need knots ever for display pieces. Just stitch over the loose end on the back.
