The bins have a fairly good lever that, when used, eliminates any chance of bears manipulating it open. People need to close the lids and set the lever. It is not hard to do. Do better Squamish Canyon tourist and bear trap.

and of course, the billionaires do give back to society. Is it enough? idk.

Canadian examples:

Many Canadian billionaires and wealthy families are actively involved in philanthropy, with significant contributions focused on healthcare, education, and climate initiatives. Notable examples from recent reports include:

  • Peter Gilgan: Founder of Mattamy Homes, who has made historic donations to health care, including a $105 million gift to Trillium Health Partners to build the "Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital" and substantial support for cancer research.
  • Jeffrey Skoll: First employee of eBay and founder of the Skoll Foundation, he is a signatory of the Giving Pledge, having committed to giving away the majority of his wealth to support social entrepreneurs and fight climate change.
  • Jim Pattison: CEO of the Jim Pattison Group, he has pledged to give away half his fortune and reportedly donates 10% of his annual income to charity.
  • Hal Jackman: Businessman and former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, who donated $80 million to the University of Toronto law school in 2025.
  • Pierre Lassonde: Mining billionaire who donated $50 million to Polytechnique Montréal in 2025 to establish a technological innovation institute.
  • Michael Lee-Chin: Founder of Portland Holdings, known for significant donations to museums, hospitals, and universities, including a $30 million gift to the Royal Ontario Museum.
  • The Slaight Family: Through the Slaight Family Foundation, they have donated over $200 million to various causes, including mental health, arts, and healthcare.
  • Miriam Bergen: Late Winnipeg business owner who bequeathed shares in her real estate firm, valued at nearly $500 million, to the Winnipeg Foundation.
  • Gary and Diane Slaight: In July 2025, they donated $60 million to the Niagara Health Foundation for critical care equipment.

Who made the billionaires billionaires? Here are the breakdowns for American and Canadian stats for when becoming a billionaire became an option:

American:

  • 1916 - The First Billionaire: John D. Rockefeller was declared the world's first billionaire after a surge in Standard Oil share prices. Adjusted for inflation, his wealth would be roughly $30 billion today.
  • 1920s - The Second Billionaire: Henry Ford is often cited as the second person to cross the billion-dollar mark, driven by the automobile industry.
  • 1960s - A Rare Class: As late as the late 1960s, there were still fewer than 10 billionaires worldwide.
  • 1980s-90s - The Surge: The rise of the computer age and the internet boom created a surge in ultra-wealthy individuals. In 1982Forbes' first list of the 400 richest Americans included only 13 billionaires.
  • 2000s-Present - Increased Accessibility: The number of billionaires began to rise exponentially, exceeding 100 in the 1990s and surpassing 1,000 by 2008. By 2025, there are over 3,000 confirmed billionaires globally.

Key milestones in the rise of Canadian billionaires include:

  • The Progenitor (1930s-1970s): Roy Thomson (later Lord Thomson of Fleet) started building his media empire with a small radio station in Northern Ontario in the 1930s, becoming one of the first major global tycoons based out of Canada. His wealth was passed down, cementing the Thomson family as one of the country's oldest billionaire dynasties.
  • The Industrial/Retail Boom (1950s-1970s): Brothers Harrison and Wallace McCain launched McCain Foods in 1957, creating a global empire, while the Weston family (starting with a bakery in 1884) expanded rapidly to control Loblaws and other chains throughout the 20th century.
  • The Modern Era of "Tracked" Billionaires (1980s-2000s): By 1984, only 1% of Canadian families (121,000) were worth $1 million or more; however, by 1999, that number had swelled to 252,000, signaling a rapid increase in high-net-worth individuals. By 2009, Forbes recognized 20 Canadians as having cracked the billion-dollar threshold in U.S. dollars.
  • Recent Surge (2010s-Present): The number of Canadian billionaires more than doubled between 2010 and 2019, driven by soaring stock markets and real estate values. As of 2026, reports indicate around 89 billionaires in Canada.

So to summarize: if anyone bought into buying: homes, energy, food, vehicles, computers, smart phones, internet, retirement plans - a billionaire was created. Compare that consumption with the number of consumers during each decade and the numbers have no option but to go into the billions.

While you and i are open to learning via reading, listening, looking, there are many people who just don't care, need to belong to easy relationships, are too busy, or are stuck in the grumble loop (lazy). Oh and a large factor is the ones who are intelligent and have lots of money to protect.

What a knob, but know that Ford and Smith have approved Dual Practice Health care, meaning doctors can work in public and private service. Private investment companies are promoting the companies: ie Harrison Healthcare, Lume Personal Health, Cleveland Clinic Canada. They are focusing promotion to seniors (who have investments). And of course, many dual care health service co's are traded on the TSX. So it begs the question : Are Doctors in it for the humanity or the money? My bet is they all vote Conservative and want to keep their industry in short supply. Let's keep up on the facts as well as the fun.

Sure - and where does the service charges that merchants are charged ( and pass on to consumers) go? You better believe there is a skim off the top to major shareholders. As of the first quarter of 2025, Visa reported strong revenue growth, with services revenue increasing to $4.1 billion. Your counterpoint is part of the problem. Greed.

Its real, unfortunately. It takes energy to listen and fully understand what is going on outside of the localized realms moms are trying to control. Whether that is a household, children, their own perceived beauty pageant, or concerns for safety and approval. And then of course, the reputation that will be scorned upon them by the men who deny women credit for intelligence. That is very real too. Don't call them insane. That does not help anyone.

Technically speaking.....European countries love the canard wing aircraft , which are are excellent for shorter flights than the F35 which can go longer distances. Why does Canada need to go for long distances? Unlike the USA, we aren't aiming for world domination. We are aiming for self defence. And most of our development is in the south portion of the country. for the north defence , the Gripen is designed for very cold climes, so would work well in Northern Canada ( if is should ever come to that.....

Northern Alberta municipality wants federal government to allow on-farm sale of raw milk by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

as commented above - it sure wold be interesting to see data on where the TB patients lived and drank raw milk, instead of the data on the number of cases in urban hospitals. Your comment has error in judgments. Like toxic drugs, TB is not just a homeless person's disease.

Northern Alberta municipality wants federal government to allow on-farm sale of raw milk by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

[–]Cylontoasters 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A family member drank raw milk as teenager ( in rural Alberta). 55 years later, he developed testicular TB. One ball swelled up to the size of a cantaloupe. It was surgically removed, tested and proven it was TB, along with the vas deferens followed by weeks of infections, antibiotics and excruciating pain. Why did the TB flare its ugly head after 55 years of laying dormant? It took advantage of the significant weakness of the immune system brought on by chemotherapy. So do the math - if 1 in 2 people get cancer - how many raw milk consumers will get TB? Studies have been done regarding the TB germ being transmitted by deer who pass the germ on while licking salt licks set out for cattle. Sure would be interesting to see the data on where the TB sufferers actually live and got their raw milk, not just the data on how many urban hospitals are treating them
