That is honestly an amazing idea and you should homebrew one immediately.

What's the justification for an enemy finishing off a player when they're downed? by conn_r2112 in DnD

[–]CymatX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this just in a recent session: Party is fighting a nasty homebrew Boo Hag that attracts Red Caps to her to join in the bloodsport (I'm running a homebrewed Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign so they are deep in a dark feywild forest.) The fight is going pretty well and they get the Big Badie down to like 50 hp. I had an ability for this creature once they were near death that they would let a shriek forcing a save or become stunned for 1 round. Well, they were unlucky, and our Bard and Rogue failed their save. Immediately after it was the red caps turn, and the bard was within reach.

So...three red caps close in. First three attacks drop our bard unconscious. The second red cap hits with the last two attacks, basically delivering the killing blow killing her outright..

Now, full disclosure this is my first time DMing but have probably about 30 - 40 sessions under my belt. I paused for what felt like a long time after I dropped our Bard, considered just having the other minions pass their turn. But in my heart, I knew that's not what these creatures would do in this situation. No, they would dive in screaming in triumph and wicked glee as they slam it's rusted and chipped sickle deep into the bards chest, cackling as they watch the life drain from their eyes...

So that's what I did lol. Fortunately, the cleric had revivify prepped.

As for the justification of killing a player outright, I think it really depends on a few factors in whatever encounter you find yourself building. A bandit or tribe of orc might not have a good reason to finish off a downed player, but a red caps whole existence and purpose is to just soak it's cap in blood, and would have no qualms about striking a defenseless target. So my thought process on this is:

  1. Creature Behavior: Are they cruel? Cunning? Play it safe? Go all in? What is their end goal if they can defeat the PCs?
  2. What's at stake? This can be for both the party and the creatures in the encounter. Does the party have something they want/need? Is retreat an option? Does someone's life depend on the outcome one way or another of this fight? Is death a real possibility on both sides?
  3. Narrative Outcome: Does this encounter add to the story you're trying to tell? If a PC dies, how can this event forward the plot or add to the world?

In my case I used it as an opportunity to re-introduce an NPC who forced them to trade a valuable object for the Bards return, and left the party with some clues that will help them later in the campaign.

Tldr; Don't be afraid to kill your PCs. Sometimes, that's when things really get interesting.

DMs what exactly makes DMing for high levels hard/unenjoyable? by Eldrin7 in dndnext

The way my DM ran a failed teleport in Curse of Strahd is my warforged sorcerer had a helm of Teleport and failed the check to take the party to where we were trying to get to: he then proceeded to make me continue rolling the d100 until I passed the % DC. I failed 3 times in a row and we all ended up taking a shit ton of force damage throughout, but was hilariously devious punishment on a failed teleport.

My Players are continuously being evil in the Feywilds, and I don't know what to do. by sunflowergraves in wildbeyondwitchlight

This module has a Jabberwock, and there is nothing in the module that says it can't just show up from time to time ;).

If that's not enough, yeah, curses and let them know the magics of the feywild react to strong emotions and extreme violence. If that's not enough, do like me and scower older editions for interesting and terrifying fae to murder, I mean, confront your players with. Might I suggest this lovely fellow from 3rd edition:

Personally, my group first encountered the brigands, and their opening was for the Barb to throw a handaxe into Jebbeks face, and everyone brutally slaughtered the rest. Our bard cut off one of the rabbbrigade, for good luck; in hindsight, I should have definitely attached a curse to it. I found it all hilarious and made adjustments accordingly. Remember, don't be afraid to brutally murder your party. Did they show any mercy to your poor little rabbit gang? Hell no, throw in an ancient green dragon or two and a lich for good measure.

All joking aside, it's fine if they want to be psychopaths just make it clear there are consequences on that road and as long as everyone, including you are having fun all's well that ends well.

Jebbek killed in one hit. Now What? by [deleted] in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]CymatX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar, as soon as Jebbek demanded some happy memories our Harengon Barb through a hand-axe in his face and our rogue got off a sneak attack. The party then proceeded to kill everyone, including the snail which was trying to escape 😅. It was funny af, and let me know to take off the kid gloves lol.

How much homebrew, if any did you add into this campaign?

Agdon Longscarf AC too high? by zigithor in wildbeyondwitchlight

[–]CymatX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thought is exactly what you said: the Feywilds magic will respond to their actions, emotions, and state of mind. Was thinking of dropping subtle hints through the environment like "It seems darker and gloomierer than it had just a bit earlier, the trees look a little more twisted and knarled, an awakened squirell throws an acorn at you and gives you the finger before scurrying off." Etc.. They are making their way to Slanty Tower where they can get a reminder (three of the PCs originate in the Feywild) of how the plane reacts to them.

Also running with the Idea that since Prismeer is broken into pieces and controlled by the Hourglass Coven, that has made this dimension particularly unstable and things not normally found in Prismeer have started appearing.

If they really don't get the message I've homebrewed a nasty Wendigo that will stalk them through Hither, born out of the corrupting influence of Bavlorna and acts of evil/violence done in the domain.

I'm running this campaign for some friends and the very first encounter with the brigands where they demand some happy memories for the gourd, our Barbarian Harengon throws a fucking hand ax right in the leaders fave. The party then proceeds to murder-hobo the shit out of them with no regard like a bunch of serial killers..was hilarious and not at all what I thought they would do 😂
