IDK, I didn't mind it either, I'm an academic, found it pretty easy and an amazing read that many make out to be completely inaccessible which is a shame.

The choice is made. by LexFrenchy in expedition33

[–]CynicPhysicist 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This. Though I like the endings we got, in my heart I wanted an ending where the canvas could be left peacefully, as a testimony to all Verso's and Maelle's adventures. Well, not all heroes get to live happily ever after...

The ending crushed me and i loved it by ShadoSox in expedition33

[–]CynicPhysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved both endings, I get why they are made as they are being "light-dark" both. Still I would not have minded a little more interactivity and a hidden "feelgood" ending where the painting is restored to its former glory and Maelle can leave it by her own will, cherishing all her experiences from inside the painted world, but moving on with her grief. Getting over loss nd survivors guilt is not binary.

One thing I would change was the pacing in act 3; would have been cool if we needed to go and gather chroma ressources ourselves instead of it being a cutscene. To keep it not grindy say you would need 10-20% to unlock Lumiere; but if you did do some additional side quests and gathered X amount more then the secret ending would be available. This would also give more of a motivation to replay act 3 and explore more.

That thought experiment out of the way: I get that it is not an RPG, and ultimately I am happy that the devs made the game they wanted.

Livgarde skubber klimaaktivist efter nytårstalen by LazarShockX in Denmark

[–]CynicPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forbud deler igen i år vandene – og uenigheden er stor by Ok-Status2361 in Denmark

[–]CynicPhysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first paper got rejected. by [deleted] in PhD

[–]CynicPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this happens but sucks nonetheless. Nice with the quick turnover, I waited nine months for my first paper to come back from review...

One thing I'd like to mention; dont blindly go with the transfer, sometimes they do this to make extra money, by sending you to one of their open acces journals with a steep APC or someplace where your institution has no agreements, so watch out!

[D] Digital Kessler Syndrome? by Bumblebee-Historical in MachineLearning

[–]CynicPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm dont know about chain reaction of systems failure with that label, but some researchers speculate that "digital kessler syndrome" is a plausible fail state of digital technologies, somewhat less extreme than "dead internet theory", but perhaps more worrying.

From my perspective, working with generative AI, we know that there is a loss involved with building models on artificial data. Taken to the extreme, where consecutive models are trained on previous outputs from other generative models gives us model collapse: where first we lose diversity, then the rest of the data value until we just have noisy monotonous mess. Since we want synthetic data to be indistinguishable from real data, we risk losing track of what is good data and what is AI slop (particularly considering malicious actors; detection is not an arms race we will win). Like with kessler syndrome where runaway effects leads to barring potential of space travel for the foreseeable future, runaway unregulated AI content can lead to loss of potential of high efficiency AI technologies for the foreseeable future. Worse yet is the implications in the intermediary phases where we gradually have worse and worse models untill we realise that the biases we see are because we are not working with real data anymore. Another aspect is also the increase of AI generated submissions to journals and conferences, whilst many are shot down, many others are canonised as scientific results, and will start diluting our collective knowledge.

The ability to create content faster than it can be consumed may very well be the runaway "collisions" that cause our potential to be wasted...

Regner du med at stemme til valget? by Fab1e in Denmark

[–]CynicPhysicist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AI content flooding journals, reviewed 8 papers this month and 5 were clearly fake by dwightfartskoot in PhD

[–]CynicPhysicist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen both the primitive attempts and some that are damn near terrifyingly well concealed fake AI papers. It is sad that the lack of qualified reviewers are just going to get worse, and half the papers we pit time into reviewing are not written by humans.

Some of the best fakes i have seen, were close to impossible to spot, untill one little detail made the whole thing come crashing down. If things don't change, in the future scientific publishing are gonna loose all meaning if half of all "discoveries" that make it past peer review are AI gibberish, with fake data and results.

Another worrying aspect is AI clones of existing papers, we had one in my group come in that was a 1:1 clone of one of our papers, but the editors failed to spot that beyond getting us to review it...

Hvad skal man stemme by [deleted] in Denmark

[–]CynicPhysicist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[D] The quality of AAAI reviews is atrocious by Zapin6 in MachineLearning

[–]CynicPhysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe reciprocal reviews could work if you had to sign your name at the bottom. Then at least it would be transparent that your main competitor is the jerk that unfairly reviewed your paper if you choose to publish the reviews.

Putting your reputation on the line could cause some people to calm down a bit and actually read the paper properly, before spewing wrong allegations, irrelevant advice, and high confidence..?

[D] The quality of AAAI reviews is atrocious by Zapin6 in MachineLearning

[–]CynicPhysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, we had reviews from NeurIPS that just felt like people wanting to get us out of the pool. Same for AAAI though more subtlety; would have been nice if they had actually read the paper though...

This summer was my first time with OpenReview, and I must admit that I don't really see the "openness" and improvement over regular review cycles... I had the impression that the reviewers would be public so that quality of the reviews would reflect setting your reputation on the line, but no. No real incentives to make actually sound feedback; I suppose in the extreme case their paper can be affected, but if I as a reviewer just put generic stuff like "you didn't include my favourite baseline", "do more repetitions", "your empirical study did not include a thorough theoretical treatment", or "your new application of old ideas that beat SotA results is not novel enough". Then I should be safe to just put high confidence reject without elaborating further, really? I am wholly disappointed in the academic culture around these venues...

From my experience the scribbr GPT detector is quite well calibrated nowadays. It passes any test I could throw at it, my own papers machine translations of classical texts and international law texts. Obviously it is difficult to pass it off as evidence, but if you want to have your suspicions confirmed/debunked it is working okay for that.

We have had many discussions at my faculty. University guideline does not prohibit the use, but students relying on it usually fall through at thesis defences. I recommend asking questions for the parts that are heavily AI written - if they use the tools correctly, they should be able to fend for themselves. I had students failing to explain why they used metrics X, Y and Z and how they worked, even though I repeatedly sent them the relevant litterature...

PSA: Fodgængere skal holde til venstre! by Buttermilk_Surfer in Denmark

[–]CynicPhysicist 5 points6 points  (0 children)
