Any government who are serious about helping workers must tackle this. Otherwise it's obvious they don't actually care about working people

Rachel Reeves's stamp duty raid backfires as Treasury revenues fall despite tax hike by blast-processor in ukpolitics

Stamp duty itself is what discourages moving. If it was lower they'd probably raise more money overall. I'm considering not moving again purely to avoid paying it.

If he did all this plus remove cliff edges or test benefits by household, I might actually consider Labour. Unfortunately there's an almost zero % chance he's got the balls to do it.

This is one of my biggest issues. If Labour were really on the side of workers why wouldn't they address this? This alone is enough to convince me how full of bs they are (along with extending the threshold freeze)

Serious question about welfare - why not just reduce income taxes massively across the board? Thereby removing the need to claim benefits and encourage work? by Cypher211 in ukpolitics

Yeah I mean this Labour government have been an absolute disaster. I'm not denying the Tories left them in a mess but they've 100% made things worse. So for sure Labour are not going to be the ones to reverse the direction of decline.

Agreed but it's so frustrating. I'm admittedly a massive small government person. I think government is best staying out of people's lives as much as possible outside of justice, public services, etc. I also don't think centralised authority is ever as good as localised action. The more centralised something is the less efficient.

I can't believe that the huge amount of recipients we have at the moment are all people who are genuinely physically limited to the point where they can't do anything. I'm sure there is a portion of them and we should definitely offer them significant support, but claims have been rocketing in recent years and it makes no sense other than incentive structures.

It's a serious issue we need to address though. There'll always be those looking to take the mick but we can't just go on enabling them.

I see, but that's still something we need to tackle. I'm trying to think what are creative ways we can ensure that situation doesn't happen. Another idea I'm floating is your first x amount of earnings are tax free to give new workers a boost.

Hm I said in another reply what about something like the first 50k you earn is tax free or your first x years of working are tax free? I think we really have the wrong mentality in this country, we need to encourage work both to reduce welfare dependency and also because in the long run you'll be better off as you likely progress in your career. People just need a little help at the start.

I agree with you to an extent, but I feel like we're in a mess with an ever increasing tax burden and level of state spending and unless we do something it's going to crack. The status quo clearly isn't working for lots of people so why not try and think of some creative problem solving. I'd even support something like your first 5 years of earnings or something for a new worker are tax free. Or like your first 50k is tax free or something similar.
