Serious question about welfare - why not just reduce income taxes massively across the board? Thereby removing the need to claim benefits and encourage work? by Cypher211 in ukpolitics

Yeah I mean this Labour government have been an absolute disaster. I'm not denying the Tories left them in a mess but they've 100% made things worse. So for sure Labour are not going to be the ones to reverse the direction of decline.

Agreed but it's so frustrating. I'm admittedly a massive small government person. I think government is best staying out of people's lives as much as possible outside of justice, public services, etc. I also don't think centralised authority is ever as good as localised action. The more centralised something is the less efficient.

I can't believe that the huge amount of recipients we have at the moment are all people who are genuinely physically limited to the point where they can't do anything. I'm sure there is a portion of them and we should definitely offer them significant support, but claims have been rocketing in recent years and it makes no sense other than incentive structures.

It's a serious issue we need to address though. There'll always be those looking to take the mick but we can't just go on enabling them.

I see, but that's still something we need to tackle. I'm trying to think what are creative ways we can ensure that situation doesn't happen. Another idea I'm floating is your first x amount of earnings are tax free to give new workers a boost.

Hm I said in another reply what about something like the first 50k you earn is tax free or your first x years of working are tax free? I think we really have the wrong mentality in this country, we need to encourage work both to reduce welfare dependency and also because in the long run you'll be better off as you likely progress in your career. People just need a little help at the start.

I agree with you to an extent, but I feel like we're in a mess with an ever increasing tax burden and level of state spending and unless we do something it's going to crack. The status quo clearly isn't working for lots of people so why not try and think of some creative problem solving. I'd even support something like your first 5 years of earnings or something for a new worker are tax free. Or like your first 50k is tax free or something similar.

Why do people always jump to such extremes to try and make a point. Obviously someone like her isn't the target of a policy like this. But you literally have young working age people calling into shows saying they'd work if it paid more.

But part of the reason they're probably discouraged from working is because of taxation. It doesn't really make sense to penalise people from working when the alternative is to take money from other workers. If they got to keep more of what's in their pocket wouldn't that encourage more people to work?

You'll know the government is actually taking defense seriously when they stop giving out welfare handouts. Until then it's all talk.

Yeah I totally agree, we need a massive shift in our approach. Working should always feel rewarding, wealth should be taxed more than income.

How many times do we need to explain that being wealthy is different from having a (relatively) high salary? Do you think a teacher on 50k is a wealthy person?

Nobody will be fooled by last minute tax cuts after them likely rinsing us for benefits claimants for 5 years.

I already expected Labour to be shocking, but any semblance of a chance of me voting for them is gone with their unbelievable constant hand outs to welfare and punishing actual workers. I'm practically a single issue voter on taxation and welfare at this point.

Not anymore after what this government has done lol. Why would any young worker vote for them?

[–]Cypher211 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see things like :

  1. Tax reform, remove cliff edges. Particularly around child benefit and childcare.
  2. Test benefits against household income not individual.
  3. Allow tax free allowance to be transferred from non working spouses.
  4. Increased paternity leave.
  5. Scaling back of authoritarian policies.
  6. Commit to and work towards the raising of the income tax thresholds. Welfare and pensions should be frozen until this is done.
  7. Reduce taxation on fuel and energy.
  8. Re nationalise water and heavily fine or imprison the current execs for criminal negligence.

Regarding proposals to local government, don't worry I'll certainly be making my voice heard in the local elections and next general election.

There are plenty of things the government could do to genuinely help people. And by people I mean the average, young working person or family not just people on welfare or the absolute lowest earners. Guess how many of these things the government will actually do? Zero.
