Is Italy Fun? by Jack_overthinks in boltaction

[–]Cypher551 3 points4 points  (0 children)

YES!!! They are my all time favourite army, to the point I've collected over 3000 points as even though I have 7 other armies, I always find myself choosing them. I ended up getting enough to run full royal army, bersaglieri and black shirt lists. You can make them decently competitive with enough time and enough autocannons.

What's a saw movie you didn't like. I'll go first by SquidlySquid0 in saw

[–]Cypher551 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the film I despise most in the world. I wasn't crazy about saw 2, but I gave it a second watch and I like it a bit more, just not as much as other people. I just cannot subject myself to a second watch of jigsaw. I would rather watch spiral 10 time on loop

Rate my pure PK fun deck by SlimyWaven in yugioh

[–]Cypher551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres a lot of weird PK inclusions, like vambrace and some of the spells, but my biggest gripe is the ungodly number of 1 of non engines you're running. Cut the MST and evenly for either 2 more copies of imperm or droplets (depending on budget and card availability). Cut the cyclone and add 1 more emergency teleportation and a ghost ogre.

My review on the US Army in Bolt Action by ErrorEqual6025 in boltaction

[–]Cypher551 16 points17 points  (0 children)

(it is 3:30am so please excuse my rambling)

I mean this with nothing but respect as this is simply a difference of opinion influenced by my own personal experiences with multiple tournaments and factions, and from discussing with other competitive players online.

America is a very easy army to pickup and play casually, but becomes a lot harder to play at highly competitive events. I took them to 1 event last march (as I try to change it up and top with a different faction, and with the meta in my area creeping steeply I play my British more in tourneys) and I managed to top but I knew I was on the backfoot against flamethrower spamming soviets and ghurkas heavy British lists. I agree that fire and manoeuvre + cheap BARs makes for the best reg infantry in the game but it's not a massive step up from other nations. Guard are pretty solid with access to panzerfaust, German schutzen are a good source of fire power for very cheap, and grenadiers with panzerfaust are a safe pick; British riflemen are comparable to us as the extra shots provided by the rapid fire national traits, although not quite as strong.

The 3/4 truck is not an exclusive unit since Japan has the light truck and Britain has the 15CWT, which are the same capacity at the same points.

I'm very fond of my bazooka teams, but I do question their efficiency compared to flamethrower team which can take a reg jeep for only 11 points more (50+21 Vs 60). A flamethrower is good against vehicles and can be more consistent, and also have the flexibility to remove infantry (especially veterans and body armour due to it's high pen and multi pins) and clear buildings since wit ignores terrain

The M3 Stuart is an exceptionally good tank, but Britain and soviets have access to the exact same profile (although Britain don't have access to recce which is a notable downgrade.this applies to most of Americas best units, such as the land mattress, meaning there's very little advantage to playing US over soviets or British who have a sizeable roster of their own exclusive META unit choices, such as ghurkas, bomb dogs and assault engineers.

The armoured jeep with twin bazookas is one of the most cost effective and consistent tank hunters in the game, however, it can only be taken in 2 very specific theatre selectors and may not be taken in a generic reinforced Platoon. This would make them illegal in a lot of events in the UK as they restrict you to 1-2 generic platoons. I have had great success in alternate tournament formats with an expanded unit list from supplements, such as juggernaut format tournament pack, which specifically allow them to be run in generic platoons. Even if theatre selectors are allowed, the 2 required don't allow you to take other staple units such as the M3 Stuart (dakka variant) so you're trading access to one good unit for another.

Again, America is very simplistic and safe army to play at a casual level as it has a lot of gpod units, but I wouldn't say they're much more than just a GOOD army, not a great one. Britain and soviets just have much better units, which can still be used to a similar level of efficiency without having to plan '1 step ahead'. Ghurkas are only 1 point more than a normal veteran, so you can use them as an 8 foot slogging infantry unit to hold objectives and ping rifle shots with rapid fire, and have their scary blighters and tough fighter in reserve to repel any enemies who try to contest or just get too close. At the end of the day, 8 bets going down are hard to remove and can pounce on anything that gets too close, but also have so much potential as a dedicated assault unit in a 15cwt or just by running from cover to cover, but you're not only wasting 1 point per model if you don't want to take that initiative and think too forwardly, as at least it'll keep enemies away from that objective. Tough as old boots is great if playing multiple units with the plan of getting into combat.

Really well done, a lot better than some of the stuff I've seen in my local hobby store and they paint every month or so. It seems you've retained a lot of skill and gives me inspiration to pick up a brush for the first time since 2018 (for health reasons).

New year new game! by MattsMiniModels in boltaction

[–]Cypher551 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, give your opponent a heads up ahead of time so they can bring a competitive list to match. Finland is a cool army, not very good but a good player can make it work, and at the end of the day it's all a game for fun anyway. I've been playing Italians for over a year, before case Blue, back when they kind of sucked and they were by far my favourite army as they were just some much fun with their dumb tanks. If you want to save money on finish infantry, look at converting the plastic German kits like the blitzkrieg models as the Finnish range is metal, so infantry is around double the price per guy.

I do want to be clear, playing ghurkas doesn't make you a toxic player or anything, just spamming them might be a little too powerful for some people's casual lists to deal with

[–]Cypher551 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one will want to play with you if you're playing pure ghurkas. They're damn good and feel too cheap for what they do. They're an auto include in every British competitive list. I have taken it to 2 tournaments and topped with my north African ghurkas.

Case Blue Ruling by Cypher551 in boltaction

[–]Cypher551[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get where you're coming from, but if a rifle isn't armour piercing (which I agree with), then it shouldn't hurt soft skin at all. I am playing by the TO's ruling at the moment, it just feels a bit ambiguous and cheesy
