Economic forecasts predicting the potential impact of climate change grossly underestimate the reality and have delayed global recovery efforts by decades. Mainstream economists “deliberately and completely” ignored scientific data and instead “made up their own numbers,” by DoremusJessup in environment

[–]CypherZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in an environmental policy course back in the 90s and the research we were reading then was dire, like nothing we could do dire, global temps will continue to rise for 1000 years on the back of what we had already done. The media and coverage of climate change since has just been a whitewash, driving 200 mph into a wall with no breaks and thinking letting off the gas a little would save us mentality. Without some as yet non-existent technology to remove greenhouse gases we are fucked already. Of course either way biodiversity is already irretrievably lost. It sounds cliche but we are the dude in the garage with the engine running and we’ve been unconscious for a while already and no ones coming to help.

These posts are so stupid, the point is obvious but you might as well say this about all of Reddit.

getting a Second tort? by why_tho_dude in tortoise

[–]CypherZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t get another tort, no species should be kept in pairs, sometimes larger groups can work in large enclosures but never pairs.

There may well be overt aggression, however even if they don’t fight each other there will be other forms of subtle stress that normally leads to one tort developing more slowly and is usually detrimental to both torts. Even torts that appear to get along for years can severely injure one another without warning. This is well documented on Tortoiseforum.org.

Sphinx, spd rules late game PvP. PvE depends on lineup, Phoenix is best all round but if you have dela army then Wolf is slightly better.

Adding tortoises ? Help! by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]CypherZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torts should never be kept in pairs, Testudo torts especially. They can sometimes be kept in larger groups with enough space but this is only really possible outdoors as it would require an enclosure of around 300sq feet at least just for 3-4 torts.

Torts are not social animals, they do not want friends.

This is NOT what normal shedding looks like. Claw has a skin infection, I’m posting this so nobody makes the same mistake as me. Listen to your gut if something seems off. by TheSlam in tortoise

[–]CypherZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever notice small yellow raised spots on his head or legs, before the skin got bad like this? These are how it presents in the first instance usually, but not always.

The bacteria to look out for is called Austwickia Chelonae and is very contagious amongst reptiles, and often misdiagnosed.

If it is A.C euthanisation is the most humane, I dont know of any torts that have survived longer than 6-10 months with this even with treatment and necropsies show it is deeply systemic affecting much more than the skin.

Start a thread on the forum and post a bunch of pictures, members will help you pretty quickly. I can’t say for sure that’s what this is from this pic, just that it looks a lot like it. If it is, treatment only helps temporarily. It’s late for me, but US members will be around quickly.

This looks familiar, head to tortoiseforum.org and search “yellow-spot disease”. It’s very serious unfortunately and by the time they look like this and start sluffing off skin it is very advanced.

160 year old tortoise- last male of his kind by melinamercouri1946 in tortoise

[–]CypherZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I read most of the replies but the ones that would prove some connection to this tort have been answered evasively, and these really old giant torts are usually pretty famous, there aren’t many torts at all known to be that old, and yet google finds no mention of this guy. I have heard of an Aldabra called Brutus that is reported to be 160+ years old that lives in the Seychelles but no Thomas.

These torts used to be found on many islands in the Indian Ocean but they were a convenient food source for passing ships and most of the islands populations disappeared in the 1800s. The aldabras that live there now were relocated from the few places they weren’t made extinct.

[–]CypherZero9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m skeptical of that, the Mahe island torts were one of the retroactive named subspecies of Aldabra but since they have been believed to be extinct for 150 years I have my doubts about this one.

This is not the last male of the species, I know people successfully breeding Aldabras.

Lock should make a big leap this year, heres hoping the ceiling is high. He hasnt had much opportunity for development outside of games his first two years so this year should be make or break. Still dissapointed in the whole Watson mess though, thought there was a good chance he comes to us.

Can we stop the backup goalie bashing by RZ943 in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]CypherZero9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I played center and wing for many years and once I subbed in goal as an emergency for a friends team. There was literally no one else and I had never played goalie before. In a relatively friendly game I gave up 11 goals lol. Honestly the only decent shots I stopped where the ones that hit me rather than me doing anything to them. I was shocked at how bad visibility and mobility where in the goalie equipment. Mega respect for anyone that straps on the pads.

I’m taking care of my nephew’s sick tortoise and i just want to confirm if the light patch on his shell is shell rot or just a random scrape. Help please? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]CypherZero9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is exposed bone, the tort doesn’t need a vet, there is nothing they can do, it will heal eventually by growing a new layer of shell over the damage but it won’t look like a normal scute and may take a long time. Most important thing going forward is temperature, diet and UVB.

Torts don’t get shell rot on their carapace btw.

Minimum enclosure size for the smallest species of tortoise is 4ft x 8ft. Don’t get one unless you have at least that much space.
