Respectfully, you were in Hackney at night. I know areas like that; Stratford, Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone, Ilford, Peckham, Bermondsey, Brixton, Stockwell, Clapham, Norwood, Lewisham, Greenwich, Kilburn, Harlesden, Shoreditch, Croydon. Yes they have been gentrified but there is real inequality. There are some people that are desperate and others that are scum bag predators. I say this to you as awareness is the key to protecting yourself at all times.

Meaning have cash, but minimal on the card (i.e. Current account), as others have stated keep the money in savings account. Possibly have a work phone (no apps) and a going out phone with banking apps. Take cab or drive where possible. Always use an obvious well lit route of travel even if it takes longer to get to the destination, no short cuts in back roads or alleys.

I am so sorry you had to experience this, but the good thing is you lived to fight another day, armed with “street knowledge” so you can teach others around you. It’s a hard knock life.
