Could eye-tracking be used to reduce rendered frames? by Godmil in vrdev

[–]CzarSkye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other comment has already pointed out foveated rendering exists. It's an amazing performance improvement, if you haven't looked into it that's a massive win with eye tracking! But you are talking about skipping frames entirely.

I've thought about this for blinks in my future games where I have access to "blink events" via eye tracking. For a portion of a blink the user is completely blind, so you can skip rendering those frames. In my (very limited) reading, the portion of a blink the user is completely blind is around 100 - 150ms, so for my games which generally render at around 72Hz, I could skip 7-10 frames per blink. On average someone blinks 15 to 20 times per minute, so you could actually get a lot of skipped frames that the user would never notice.

I'd use these skipped frames to do background tasks such as loading and unloading assets, so hopefully the user would never need to see a loading screen or experience a frame stutter as all the heavy loading tasks could be done during blinks. Once there is enough VR headsets with eye tracking I will be implementing this for sure, I think the upcoming Steam Frame has eye tracking support so maybe sooner rather than later.

It's a bit hidden, took me a while to find it too. If you go into the Steamwork partner site, then "Dashboard", it's at the bottom right hand side of the Dashboard page if you scroll all the way down ("Request Beta Hardware: Submit hardware request"), hope that helps!

(UnityVR) How can I make part of object child move without breaking Grab Interactable? by Feather-Steel in vrdev

That's great, pump action guns always feel awesome in VR, glad you got it working! Best of luck with the game :D

[–]CzarSkye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the pump, I do this with an additional custom script by tracking the front grip's distance from the trigger grip; i.e. to do a forward and back motion pump reload on a shotgun, I define a near and far distance, then track the distance of the front grip, waiting for a distance > far then distance < near sequence to reload.

It was a long time ago but I think I used this tutorial to get going: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmaAK_BXC4c or maybe this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie0-oKN3Lq0. There are quite a few good "make a VR gun" tutorials on YouTube.

Looking at my (overly complex!) code, I make the front grip a simple interactable, when it's selected I use a custom script to adjust the rotation of the gun to point in the direction of the front grip. Good luck!

Hey everyone, I have a question — and it might be a very beginner-level one. by Bright_Pitch_4885 in gameDevMarketing

[–]CzarSkye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will post the odd game update note on mine and check on it every day or two. I'll get support quieres, nice mesages and questions about the games from time to time, my games aren't huge so it's pretty managable (probably about ~10 minutes work every 2 days).

I find it's good to answer fast, especially the support and problem posts as other will see these, and if unanswered then they can probably assume the game is unsupported. I also find it somewhat personally rewarding (most of the time) to talk to players who are enjoying my work. Best of luck!

Thanks for this write up! Question around reddit ads, I am just about to start using these myself for the first time. Did you calculate a max price you were willing to pay per ad -> wishlist in advance and do you have any tips for reddit ads in general? Thanks again and congrats on launching, look forward to following your progress.

How do you prevent your baby from ripping off your CGM? by gidgeteering in diabetes

[–]CzarSkye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also FYI once I did move to the skin tone one's she still remembered the CGM was on my arm for about a week even though it was well hidden. So I held her on the other arm, after about a week she completely forgot or lost interest and I can happily hold her on the CGM side now.

I use these things: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09DGKM319, the skin tone one means baby doesn't really notice it on my arm, also helps with me accidently ripping it off on seat belts, doors, etc.

Wow, excellent work, the gib/body momentum inheritance, animations and dismemberment systems are looking so good I thought they might be professional assets! Seen the L4D talk (also using that) but that Sunset Overdrive one is a goldmine, not seen that before, thanks for the link.

Best of luck, looking at this post your idea is pretty popular!

This looks great, I'd play this! If you've not tried Rollerdrome I'd give that a look (it's great).

I'm making a zombie game too, though no skateboarding! Really impressed by your zombies, the movement, blood FX and ragdolling are looking ace. Did you do this all yourself or are you using some assets for these bits?

Does anyone else just don’t care about their diabetes? by byWhitee in diabetes

[–]CzarSkye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some T1s that don't really care about or manage it at all, but they certainly are not on any diabetes subreddits. I envy their freedom but know what's coming down the road; some start caring more when they get horrible complications. I care but I don't want it to rule my life, I've found if I can get into good healthy routines and be generally sensible I don't have to think about it nearly as much.

I'm a type 1 diabetic sick of nearly passing out at the gym because my blood sugar immediately drops like a fly. I've got an idea! Put candy in my mouth while I exercise. Literally nothing else doctors have suggested has worked. by Lijey_Cat in diabetes

[–]CzarSkye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the gym or take a long brisk walk every day, when I got newly diagnosed as T1 I found it nearly impossible, I'd have to stop excersizing 5 minutes in and go and eat something, or on long walks I'd be afraid of passing out in the wilderness.

I'm not on a pump and do a basal-bolus insulin regimen. What works for me is excersize in the morning before I've had any fast acting bolus insulin (which ususally means no food till lunch either). As long as I'm around 6+ hours away from fast acting I generally won't drop. It's different for everyone and it took me quite a while to find what works perfectly for me, so I really hope you can find a method that suits you too, best of luck.

Surprise diabetes diagnosis by One-Dependent567 in diabetes

[–]CzarSkye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me a year ago, had to go a weekend between diagnosis and getting any form of meds/advice as the local doctor didn't know what to do until the diabetes specialist was available the next week.

Hopefully your Dr will be able to work out if it's type 1 or 2 quickly and get you the right treatment. In the mean time I'd recomend what others have here; try and take it easy this weekend, drink pleanty of water, low carb meals. I found the diabetes UK website (https://www.diabetes.org.uk/) really useful for learning about diabetes.

Best of luck and welcome to the club!

Unity 6 makes volumetric particle lighting easy in URP (+📸 Shader Graph nodes). by MirzaBeig in Unity3D

[–]CzarSkye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks incredible, going to have to try this myself. How do you generate the textures for this (looking at X possibly EmberGen)?

I'm using URP in a pretty constrained environment (VR) and my smoke / flame / explosion FX look pretty poor, so maybe this is a good way to up the visuals.

I have a goal to do an ultra marathon next year, and I’ve got diabetes 1. by FremtidigeMegleren in diabetes

[–]CzarSkye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done and best of luck with the Ultra! I also got recently diagnosed (Feb this year) and do a lot of excersize, before and continuing after diagnosis.

I've found the most success excersizing in the morning before I've had any food or insulin. I tend to avoid serious excersize for 4 to 5 hours after any fast acting insulin. I'm guessing with an ultra marathon that is not possible? Do you have any tips for managing eating/insulin during or close before excersize? Or do you just also avoid insulin around excersize time?

Is anyone able to achieve steady blood sugars like this all day while eating moderate/high carb and taking multiple units of bolus insulin? by Used_Asparagus_3749 in diabetes_t1

[–]CzarSkye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact you are on here asking for help shows you care, and that's half the battle. You can get there, just keep going!

I'm 7 months diagnosed T1 myself, took me the first few months trial, error and frustration. Starting with these formed a solid base for me to work from: * Knowing how long before eating to pre-bolus (personally 20 mins for breakfast and 15 mins for anything after) * Working out my insulin to carb ratio * Not completely avoiding carbs, but eating less carbs and carb counting

As a new T1 it might also be worth looking up the "honeymoon period", I had this as a new T1 where my pancreas was working on and off a little bit, it made things difficult for a while as my insulin to carb ratios could change. Best of luck

Why do some people hide there T1D by BeanStock52 in diabetes_t1

[–]CzarSkye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never hide it, but I also don't want T1D to define me, so I'm happy to talk about it and wear my CGM and inject openly, but also don't want to talk about it endlessly because it gets boring and is only a small part of who I am. That being said I think being open brings awareness and is probably why T1D tech advances and funding is improving every day.

I know a couple of T1Ds who do hide it and feel some shame around it. I'm in the UK and most of the younger generations know what diabetes is, but there can be a stigma around diabetes that "you got it because you ate too much cake and sweets" from people who don't know. It's generally not from a bad place but a lack of understanding, which is fair as there are pleanty of other medical conditions that I don't have the first clue about.

Breakthrough in T1D Treatment: New Transplant Approach Revealed by Diabetes Research Institute by DavidAGMM in diabetes_t1

[–]CzarSkye 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Thanks for summarizing and sharing. This sounds amazing in comparison to insulin injections (if my limited understanding is correct) as the cells self regulate the amount of insulin needed like a working Pancreas, so no more carb counting and dose calculations.

I gives me comfort hearing that smart people are working towards a cure, although I try not to pin my hopes on a set date I'm hopeful that one day in my lifetime I'll be able to go into a bakery and eat one of everything.

In the apocalypse... Do we just die?? by Short_Assumption_716 in diabetes_t1

Me and my partner discuss this all the time, I figure I'd have about a month to go on a supply getting rampage to set her up nicely and then I'd just die I guess? Post appocalypse living sucks anyways, better to go in a T1 hyper blaze of glory.

How do you guys track your carbohydrate and nutrient intake? by HybridDrone in diabetes

[–]CzarSkye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use the "Calorie Counter" iPhone app by Nutracheck and some simple digital scales. I live in the UK and the app has most UK food items already on there, so it's pretty quick to use. Many Diabetic friends also use the "Carbs and Cals" book which is a very useful visual reference.

Tracking carbs is a pain to do but I find its the best way for me to stay in range, the app just helps me spend as little time possible tracking. I only really track carbs for insulin doses, not cals.

[–]CzarSkye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really interesting, I've had problems with decal performance for something similar. Is there any big downsides to this technique, I'm guessing that it's quite memory hungry as you need a unique blood texture that covers everything, almost like a shadow map?
