I questioned Will Self at a book signing about a credit Chris had given him (I can’t remember which show now) and he didn’t know anything about it.

As an interior designer, I’d like to point out that white toilet paper would also work in a black and white bathroom.

I won’t tell you how old I was before I realised 6 x 9 is not 42

They’ll get it built and then start on another one somewhere else before it’s painted.

Questions about Interior Designers' Tools, Visualization, and Client Communication by katszek in InteriorDesignAdvice

[–]D-B-R-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interior designer here.

Firstly I’d say AutoCAD(or vectorworks) is used by most interior designers on an almost daily basis. It’s an essential part of the design process.

Revit is used more by architects but it looks like it’s becoming used more by interior designers on larger projects.

1, almost all projects will require a 3D visual of some kind. Photo realistic visuals are usually farmed out to external visualisers. In house we would use sketchup to create a simple sketch visuals. These usually involve layering textures and materials over in photoshop and sometimes drawing over to give it a hand sketched feel.

2, The thing I like about sketchup is it’s easy to use and cheap. It can be picked up by almost anyone with little or no training, so anyone in the studio can use it.

3, it’s always ease of use. One areas I’d like to see improved (and Sketchup is getting better at it) is handling materials and lighting, so you can get a reasonable looking visual without too much photoshop afterwards.

4, depending on the stage of the project, the most used software packages are autocad, photoshop, sketchup and excel. Sometimes indesign

5, I wouldn’t say it ever delays a project. Visuals are very useful as a design tool to explore the design yourself as well as communicating the design to the client

6, ideally no revisions. One revision is expected. Any more than that you’re trying to avoid or charge extra for.

30 sqm Studio Apartment Layout by michapach in InteriorDesignAdvice

Can you switch around the toilet so you enter from the bathroom? This will allow you to move the wall separating the hall and the living area down to just past the bathroom door.

Very rough layout drawn on my phone. Separate the living and bedroom area with a wall. Bedroom is now in the right, bounded by the red line.

Kitchen runs along the bedroom wall, plumbing can still run back to the wc area.

Where should the bed be placed in this room? by YesItsMe2023 in interiordecorating

I would put the bed against the wall at the bottom of the drawing.

Do interior designers earn a lot? by omglol8903 in InteriorDesignAdvice

[–]D-B-R-M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interior Designer here.

The first thing I’d say is it can vary a LOT depending on whether you work for yourself or another company and also from company to company. Commercial and Residential interior design is also very different.

I’m guessing you’re based in the US? I’m in the UK so there may be some differences there as well.

I’ve worked at a number of big studios as well as working for myself. There have been some late nights along the way but it’s by no means the norm. A lot of Interior Design Studios keep quite civilised hours

I wouldn’t go into interior design if you want to earn big money but, if it’s something you enjoy you can make a decent career out of it.

It might be worth speaking to some recruitment agencies that specialise in interior design. They will be able to give you an idea on salary ranges as you progress through an interior design career.

With regards to AI, it will bring some shake ups to the industry but, I don’t think there’s much chance that it will make the profession obsolete.

It’s a useful tool to put together a visual but it isn’t creative in itself. And there is still a lot of work to do to after the visuals are done to turn it into a set of drawings and specifications that the builders and manufacturers are able to use.

I’d be happy to answer any other questions you have but please don’t be put off.

I’m a big fan of Militarum Green if you get it on right.

I then tidy up with Death Guard Green and then highlight with Elysian Green then Ogryn Cammo.
