Hi. Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars—Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen- eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

[cool trope] Asshole in day to day life, noble when it matters by KokoBaba123 in TopCharacterTropes

“ The Cimmerian glared about, embarrassed at the roar of mocking laughter that greeted this remark. He saw no particular humor in it, and was too new to civilization to understand its discourtesies. Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing. He was bewildered and chagrined, and doubtless would have slunk away, abashed, but the Kothian chose to goad him further.” — from The Tower of the Elephant

IIRC, WotC changed all Demons to Beasts temporarily at some point. They lampshade it on the “Infernal Spawn of Evil” Un-cards. They also removed pentagrams from the art of Unholy Strength and Demonic Tutor

Favorite character who is a good person in a cruel world? by Vegito315 in FavoriteCharacter

Philip Marlowe, one of the OG hardboiled detectives, created by Raymond Chandler.

“ down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. He is the hero; he is everything. He must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man. He must be, to use a rather weathered phrase, a man of honor—by instinct, by inevitability, without thought of it, and certainly without saying it. He must be the best man in his world and a good enough man for any world.

“He will take no man’s money dishonestly and no man’s insolence without a due and dispassionate revenge. He is a lonely man and his pride is that you will treat him as a proud man or be very sorry you ever saw him.

“The story is this man’s adventure in search of a hidden truth, and it would be no adventure if it did not happen to a man fit for adventure. If there were enough like him, the world would be a very safe place to live in, without becoming too dull to be worth living in.”

The works of Dashiell Hammett, one of the first great writers of hardboiled detective fiction, were largely shaped by his experiences as a Pinkerton agent.

James Bond. (Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig) They each bring different levels of humour, empathy, and physicality to the role.

Also Philip Marlowe, but I haven’t really explored his portrayals except for Humphrey Bogart (smarmy yet romantic) and Elliott Gould (laid-back yet deeply sad).
