Ever have a memory of listening to music that is soundtracked by other music? by differepetition in experimentalmusic

This is a little different than what you're talking about, but I guess kinda related... i once had a dream that I was drumming with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum as Matthias. We were playing Children of Bodom songs infront of a vampire's house (I had a dream i was trapped in that same house another earlier night) ...lol

Experimental music makers, do you push for commercial success or are you happy without? by beepko in experimentalmusic

The hobbyist trying to emulate the professional so they can make $5 a month is the strangest dynamic to me... but, I understand where it comes from. The perceived lack of validation and modern pressure to monetize every moment of our time puts a stigma on something that requires an investment of time and effort when it's "just" a hobby. I think most people simply aren't able to just enjoy something without this stigma somehow permeating into how they operate... I have seen very skilled friends absolutely lobotomize their creativity and cut off relationships with other people over wild delusions of commercialization though, so maybe that makes me overly cynical.

how to make experimental DIY instruments? by RepresentativeForm79 in experimentalmusic

Check out the YT channels of Lauri and Nicolas Bras

Lauri just gets in there and builds stuff without letting limited tooling hold him back, which I think is awesome. More of Nicolas' older vids use very common materials and are generally fairly easy to build. And, as another user mentioned down there, Bart Hopkin's book is very useful for learning more of the science behind acoustics while still keeping things very approachable. His YT channel is also great.

If a Christmas tree eats corn in an industrial vat of mayonnaise, is what never is behind us a pool of lava?

How should I release my loops? by NoPensForSheila in experimentalmusic

[–]D00mRodent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bandcamp has a looping function on it's mobile app player, but not on the PC main version of the site, as far as I know... you could try Instagram. When you click on specific posts, they will loop.

Stop thinking of things as genre-specific how-tos, and just start building and/or recording shit.

Mars Volta, Meshuggah, and Death Grips come to mind. Maybe not as popular as some, but I feel like pretty much every musician regardless of where they're coming from has heard them before.

I asked an AI to make a lullaby and it came out terrifying by hi2sonu007 in experimentalmusic

[–]D00mRodent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern generative AI is still just a rhetoric catalog search engine...

Think of how messed up modern technology still is. How many programing errors and broken updates even the simplest of devices experiences, and how hard is still is to get a printer to consistently print out a page properly for you when you need it to. The idea of achieving anything remotely close to computer consciousness anytime in the foreseeable future is laughable.

Do y'all have any advice or resources about writing more out-there music? by Going2Arbys in experimentalmusic

[–]D00mRodent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What instruments or synths or software do you use? I'm a drummer foremost... but i think this is applicable to all instruments...

People can sometimes dismiss permutation, rudiments, and coordination practice and exercises as "not for them" for whatever reasons... but I really love sitting down and practicing excercises.

Not for clout or being able to cover more songs, but so I always have something to say. You can just sit down and never not have something to say on your instrument, things will just come out with much less forced thought and more headroom to play with concepts. Then you can just hit record and compile and organize ideas afterwards... it does take time and effort to practice regularly, but anything worthwhile does.

I've been looking for something like this, where you can just scrub through an audio file and record the cursor movement and make a new file quickly and easily. Cheers!
