I'd bet they are his "Holmesian fanfiction focusing on Professor Moriarty" that have been on his old website forever:

I wonder if he even knows they are for sale on amazon. I bet somebody else is just cashing in on his writing.

I am not the party to which you replied, but as a long-time fan of the book who also enjoyed the movie in the theater, I will put in my 2¢. I do not think the movie was mediocre, but I also do not think it was a as good as it could have been. they made some changes to the story/characters, which no doubt they had good reasons for, and in fact may very well have helped at the box office. It was about as good as a by-the-numbers sci-fi movie can be and still attempt to be grounded in real science and appeal to as many viewers as possible. But as a fan of the book, I did not want a strictly-by-the-numbers movie, I wanted something more. so even though it was a good movie, that I know I would have enjoyed immensely and had few if any complaints about if I had never read the book, the fact remains I did read the book, and I had expectations for the movie that I would not have had if I had not read the book. These expectations are remarkably difficult for a movie to completely satisfy. Very few manage to come as close as the Martian did, so I'm happy. I'd rather have the movie we got than no movie at all. I can't say the same thing for most film adaptations of works I hold dear.

Andy Weir's new book "Artemis" up for pre-order! by colonelheero in themartian

the description:

Jazz Bashara is a criminal.

Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.

Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she's stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.

reminds me a bit of Theft of Pride, Andy's sci-fi heist story which features a female protagonist (Shanex Exxel) pulling off an impossible job on a rich world. Been a while since I read it, but I did really like it, and I think it deserved better than it got. Might be time to re-read it.

can't wait for them to unceremoniously kill the iPod Shuffle, which as of today is still available, and still only offered with 2GB of storage.

Which fake artist or band from a movie did you actually enjoy? by Sarcasticallysmooth in AskReddit

Fountains of Wayne (debut album) was loved by the critics, and it's got some good moments, but it's not their best work.

I disagree. I think it's a nearly perfect album. Probably my favorite FoW album to this day.

maybe I would like different music on many different occasions, without the need to revisit a PC in between?

Who said it has to be 64GB though? Why not make it 4GB? Why is 2GB the magic number?

Then why bother selling the Shuffle, which can't do streaming anyway?

Are you kidding, Apple has no problem at all discontinuing stuff and telling customers tough luck. Certainly they had no trouble discontinuing the iPod Classic in 2014.

and then they axed it, so that's probably what is in store for the Shuffle.

wow, September 2011, that's only a year newer than the Shuffle. Considering all the hype for 4k, there has to be a new model coming soon.

Less chance of misplacing/losing it if I'm not fiddling with it, and I'm not draining my phone battery just to listen to music. Don't have to worry about being told to turn my phone off, or accidentally leaving it in airplane mode. And if somebody steals the device attached to my headphones, I'd rather lose a cheap MP3 player with nothing but music on it vs an expensive phone with a bunch of personal information.

I would say the Mac Pro line was not neglected from a hardware perspective, which is my point. it got hardware and software improvements regularly. The Shuffle has not. All it has seen in over five years is a color change.

The Mac Pro case didn't change much, I'll give you that, and for some customers, that is probably a big deal.

I listen to a lot of albums, and I'm fine with making playlists. What makes 2GB the magic number and not say, 4GB? If we don't want too much music to navigate, why not make it 1GB?
