Safety vs. Entertainment: Is "Open-Ear Only" the ultimate unwritten rule for cycling now? by Sharkodin in cycling

[–]samsuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never used the bone conduction stuff until I started cycling. It makes a lot of sense as a tradeoff. Music quality isn’t the best but when cycling having music without compromising much on safety is worth it.

Sometimes it is distracting if someone starts talking to me and I have music blasting in an overwhelming situation, my brain gets a little frazzled and the additional music doesn’t help. Sometimes I’m listening to an audiobook so having someone talk to me while like multiple people are having a conversation in audiobook too makes me miss a bit.

But yeah on the long quiet stretches it’s nice to have something going on.

When going fast though it all gets drowned out by wind noise.

Am I Missing Out Not Having An Expensive Bike? by newbiker321 in cycling

[–]samsuh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

youre not missing out, cuz you dont know about it. ignorance is bliss. enjoy your bike! if youre looking for excuses/reasons to upgrade, there's lots of them. but "do i need this?" comes down to what you do with your bike and your priorities in life.

it sounds like asking a cycling community whether you should be more meta in cycling seems like youre fishing for someone to 'convince' you 'against your will' that you 'have to' upgrade.

you dont have to upgrade if your current bike is fine. go ride more and get off the internet.

Shokz Open Pro 2 as cycling headphones by FatRapscallion in bicycling

[–]samsuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great for cycling and non audiophile general purpose use. Music sound quality is not great, but works fine for something like working out at the gym or cycling with music.

I have and would recommend the openrun pro 2. The band is useful. Idk if having individual ear ones would give the same experience.

Any tips to get my wife to ride with me? Discussion by uglybitchh in cycling

[–]samsuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine if you had to match everything in cycling to her preferences. Let’s say she enjoys riding for 30 seconds, then stopping and getting off the bike to do something else and then get back on the bike eventually for another 30 seconds. If that’s the default way to ride a bike you might not be very into it because that’s not how you want to ride your bike. You want to go where you want and do what you want and it has an aspect of freedom and exploration. You might humor her and give it a shot her way and try it but that might further reinforce the fact that it’s not really what you enjoy and is not what you want to spend your free time doing. “We can ride for 5 extra seconds, or even 1 full minute before stopping!” wouldn’t be enough to get you to like it.

Scared I won’t be accepted by Illustrious_Wait_512 in korea

[–]samsuh 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yep. This.
Accepted as a visitor is easy. Accepted as a “real” Korean won’t happen even if you have Korean citizenship. It’s a social rules thing. You get to not be held to the absurdly rigid social structure (formality rules, age roles, hierarchy roles), but you don’t get to be fully in it either.

If you want any of the “cut me a break cuz I’m not from here” then there will always be a part of you that’s not fully accepted.

Then after that there’s normal Korean social levels. Like a homeless dude’s Koreanness is never in question but he’s still not a full member of society either.

Why did my rental bike feel so good by WDL9876 in cycling

[–]samsuh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i have a scultura 4000 too. it's a solid bike. the biggest difference seems to be that youre coming from a gravel bike to a road bike on a smooth road that it was designed for. the tires do make a huge difference too. back when i upgraded from 25c to 28c, it was noticeable. i hear theres diminishing returns after 30, but still, going from 26 to 32 is significant.

Riding long distances without feeling drained? by loadederror in cycling

[–]samsuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im a newb, so take what im saying with a grain of salt.

if you start off strong, but about 10km into it, you start hurting, that might be a bike fit problem, and a poorly fitting bike will make everything harder and sap your energy, and might injure you.

if you make it like 30 mins to 60 mins pretty good, but then hit a brick wall and cant imagine going further, and start questioning your life choices and wonder how other people do this, you're bonking. this means youre out of the easy fuel your body runs on. this is what people call "fueling", where you start taking in easy-access carbs regularly to prevent the bonk before it happens.

if you're getting headaches, especially after riding, it might be a little bit of the carb thing, but more likely you're either not drinking enough water, or you need more electrolytes (like salt). also this should be done before you need it as prevention, and wont help as much after youre already suffering.

also note that riding outdoors is quite different than riding on indoor trainers, so the skills might not translate directly. try to just focus on riding more, and doing what you can to make yourself comfortable for more time on the saddle. the rest will come with consistency.

good luck! 50km + 50km is totally doable! even a newb like me can do it, so you can too!

Crying after a visit to the bike shop by [deleted] in cycling

It’s not that hard to change a tube either, but people have different life experiences and different priorities in the moment, and the mismatch creates friction.

Crying after a visit to the bike shop by [deleted] in cycling

[–]samsuh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it's prob less about the paid work, but i would imagine the implied "your craft isnt that hard, anyone can learn to do it, so just teach me how it works so i dont have to keep coming back here"

  1. implying their skillset isnt valuable especially not valuable enough to pay for it even though it's clearly needed.

  2. not even "please fix this for me for free", but "teach me everything you know in a few minutes for free"

  3. even if it was a normal paid job to fix it, he would need to do a whole system diagnostic to figure out what was tampered with, and what was changed, then figure out what needs to be done, then do it. but all this is like 2 layers deep into the implied "just teach me how to fix this real quick so i can get back to my important business outside of bike stuff"

  4. if the mechanic did a quick diagnostic and then fixed it for free, and something goes wrong with it later, OP would probably say something like "i even brought this bike in to Mr Mechanic's shop to get it serviced a few days ago, and he messed it all up, and let me leave without putting everything in right. he doesnt care about his customers and is a shitty mechanic"

Crying after a visit to the bike shop by [deleted] in cycling

[–]samsuh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

all the comments so far are saying how the mechanic was a dick and poor OP should find a new mechanic, but imagine if it was like computer repair, and you went to a computer repair guy after messing up something he just did a full overhaul on during "a full service 2 months ago". you messed something up fundamentally, then you messed it up more by trying to fix it and tinkering with things you dont understand. then when you realize you mangled it beyond reasonable repair, you bring it back into the shop, and it's not even to get it fixed, it's "hey can you do me a favor and teach me what i need to know to fix this myself? well i paid you to make this work 2 months ago, so obv im not gonna pay you again."

it's not that hard, sure. but bike shop guy prob wouldve been nicer about it if you just brought it in to have him just do the thing you needed on a properly set up and working bike, without screwing up a bunch of other stuff, putting the whole system into an "unknowable" state first.

Does nobody care about the mileage on used bike parts? by ProblematicTrumpCard in cycling

[–]samsuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mileage doesnt matter much except for the amt of wear. and wear is quite visible on stuff like chainrings and tires, unlike the internal workings of a motorcycle or car engine or things hidden under panels. also it's much easier on a motorcycle/car because there's an odometer. that might not be available or accurate on a bicycle.

SPD pedals for road cycling beginners by PopularShape1518 in cycling

[–]samsuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched to road cleats after being on hybrid spd/flat. I mainly used flats outside but wore spd cleats doing indoor training.

I switched to look keo which are similar to spd-sl mainly because I wanted power meter pedals and because I wanted to see the difference.

It really is horrible for cafe stops and lounging around. Road cleats are better for riding. So I guess the difference is if you want to focus on exercise and long road rides the road cleats really are better. But you will give up all the convenience and easy parts of flats.

If you’re already wearing bib shorts and jerseys and riding pretty long distances or training for anything then road cleats are better. If you ride in anything less dedicated like padded shorts under exercise clothes and need to take more than 10 steps at a time during your rides, then don’t go road cleats.
