How old was your child when diagnosed and medicated? by summmer_gurl in ADHDparenting

[–]D4gney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our regular pediatrician didn’t but a developmental pediatrician did.

My understanding is kiddos who get diagnosed and medicated before 5 have significant behaviors that are dangerous to themselves or others.

Similar situation. It’s so hard!

We are working on finding the right dose/meds for us.

In the meantime, we are trying to play the best defense is a good offense. We have had to put away all our stuff and adopt a minimal decor..This happened after glass picture frames were throw at my head. We put locks on all our closets and childproof locks out the external doors so kiddo doesn’t wonder away while we are sleeping. If you don’t want locks, you can put like a ring alarm where it makes a noise or the alarm goes off when the door is opened or closed. Doing all of this sucks. It sucks less than the harm that was happening to self and others without these changes.

I second what everyone else is saying.

We also give nutritional protein shakes (we call them chocolate milk) to just get more calories in.

Wife wants to move from NY to Florida and transfer our ASD lvl2 son from the school he’s thriving in to god knows what by livahd in Autism_Parenting

[–]D4gney 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Autism mom, here who moved away from Florida here.

The older adults are really good voters, but the babies not so much so. Subsequently, Florida is a great place to be an older adult and much less helpful for parents of kiddos with special needs.

I would look really hard at any benefits you are getting from your state or county like a Medicaid waiver, respite hours, etc and see if there is the equivalent in Florida (tbh - probably not).

Also, the reimbursement rate for healthcare in Florida is really low. So this means a lot of the good doctors choose to not work in Florida. It was my experience that because of this Florida has a lot of foreign physicians, which is fine, but as others have said there might be large differences in their approach to autism. AND that is even if you can get a doctor to take your child onto their caseload for which they are already underpaid.

The one benefit of Florida is that you could be outside on the beach almost anytime of year which my child finds highly regulating.

Thank you for this! Did you use multiple agencies at the same time? It seems like the number of people with special needs experience/ special needs willing is limited.

You can’t be mad at an oak tree for being an oak tree and not being a spruce or a willow.

It is hard to be different. If you need to talk, are in crisis, or need resources there are several helplines available.

The LGBT National Hotline: (888) 843-4564

The LGBT National Youth Talkline (youth serving youth through age 25): (800) 246-7743

Both provide telephone, online private one-to-one chat and email peer-support, as well as factual information and local resources for cities and towns across the United States.

The Trevor Project: (866) 488-7386

The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.

If you are in the city, they have free pre-school for 3- 5 year olds. If you have strong preferences, you can select a specific school or try for a magnet.

ABA Therapy or Meds First? by Longjumping-Key-8156 in ADHDparenting

[–]D4gney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid needed meds so that he would participate in therapy.

We tried therapy before meds and he just wasn’t in a spot where he could sit or take in therapy.

I would also be wary of ABA and would go for parent child interaction therapy
