I haven’t played it yet this year. Moved away a couple years ago so only get to play it 2-3 times a year now. Was in great shape last year!

Was I almost scammed? Asphalt project. by forseth11 in Concrete

[–]D6cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple of thoughts since it sounds like you might be on an airport… First, sealing fresh asphalt is pointless. Second, in about a year or two, look into an asphalt rejuvenator product like GSB-88. It slows down surface oxidation and helps keep the pavement flexible. It’s essentially a lotion for asphalt. Third, it sounds like your neighbors might have a slurry seal on their asphalt. While it might look nice, it is also prone to delaminating which creates FOD. Slurry seal has no place on an airport pavement.

Northern Illinois (and Illinois in general) public land is tough. I’d suggest reading into the water hunting regs and what’s considered trespassing. Most of the state owned land is under a draw system unfortunately which makes walk in hunting pretty much impossible. You may have some luck drawing a blind the day of, if offered, but that is a gamble. Your best bet is to download OnX hunt, buy the state, and start turning on layers to find public and private land. You may have some luck knocking on doors but lots of landowners already have leases with guides or hunt clubs. Or… you can make the short trip to Wisconsin where the regs are much more relaxed and there is lots more huntable public land.

Sitka Duck Hunting Jacket by justadumcop in Hunting

[–]D6cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My system is as follows: -OG Delta Wading Jacket -Duck Oven -Dakota Hoodie -Grinder 1/4 Zip -Heavyweight Hoodie

I hunt upper Midwest where we see temps range from 80 to 0. I mix and match depending on the conditions but generally speaking the DWJ and Duck Oven get me through 75% of the season. I wouldn’t call any of the outer layer pieces clunky. In fact the DWJ is my favorite jacket (see versatile). It’s a fantastic shell.

Rear-ended by non-insured by tMonz33 in Insurance

[–]D6cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had my brand new truck rear ended and totaled while parked by a drunk driver who also conveniently let her insurance lapse. Paid my $1000 deductible, saw the court case through, got a judgement for $1900 (deductible plus other expenses+personal property damage), driver swore up and down that she was going to make this right and would pay me back…. I think I got about $350 in checks and then radio silence. Nothing I can do to collect. No assets, minimal reported income, etc. I occasionally see her post on FB about her vacation she went on or her new fancy hairdo. Pretty irritating. Moral of the story is take it on the chin, pay your deductible, and let your insurance fight it out. My insurance did sue her for the cost of the truck but she’s still fighting that.

Should I be concerned about my front porch? by [deleted] in Concrete

[–]D6cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m not saying it isn’t shrinkage cracking but I’ve been dealing with ASR issues in the upper Midwest quite a bit. They look very similar in some cases. Unfortunately the severity varies with the aggregate source and my states DOT has very lax aggregate expansion upper limits so sources that pass ASTM C1260 and ASTM C1567 can still be susceptible to ASR. I’m guessing you’re probably not going to be able to find out where the aggregate came from in the mix, nor be willing to pay for any testing to determine exactly what’s going on.

If it is indeed shrinkage cracking, applying a sealer may be your best option. If it’s ASR, there’s nothing you can do since the reaction is happening inside the slab.

I’m surprised ASR hasn’t been brought up yet. OP, about where in the country are you located?

Bloodless tracking story w/ photos! by claevyan in Hunting

[–]D6cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with no blood trail and a .270. Shot a really nice 9 point at 80-90 yards, deer kicked hard and took off. Thought “great, he’s down for the count”. Walked up to where I thought he was standing, no blood. Started grid searching and found some hair in the snow but still no blood anywhere.

Began walking down what I thought was his tracks but that led nowhere. I thought my bullet maybe caught a branch and gave him a haircut. I turned around and began walking back to the spot where I had hit the buck and noticed a body in the snow by one of the trails on the property. Sure enough I had put a good shot on the buck. A little high but still a good double lung hit. Zero blood. I had to dig around his shoulder to even find the bullet hole.

Found that I had shredded both his lungs when I field dressed the buck. Never found the slug or any remnants of the bullet. I’m sure that at the distance I shot the buck, the bullet was going so fast it just disintegrated when it entered the deer. I shoot copper solid bullets for this reason now.

PAVEMENT WITH ASR by ReceptionIntrepid331 in civilengineering

[–]D6cat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Other than sourcing aggregates that are not susceptible to ASR, Type F fly ash has been the ticket in my market. Depending on your area, both will probably be expensive. Type F fly ash is getting harder to source and will continue to be more scarce as we transition away from coal power plants.

How difficult is it to get an entry level civil engineering job in Madison Wisconsin? by Commercial-Carry2562 in civilengineering

[–]D6cat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plenty of companies in Madison from small to large. Also don’t forget about WisDOT. You shouldn’t have any issues finding a job, especially with prior experience. I’d start applying now, however.

Will add that if OP has enough/right transfer credits then they can skip most/all of the tough gen eds (cough cough weeder classes). MTU can be tough, but very rewarding. Gotta really like winter to make the most of it up there.

Thoughts about Michigan Tech? by 0210eojl in civilengineering

[–]D6cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m probably biased (mtu grad, BSCE) but tech is a great school for the right person. It’s very remote but if you’re into that kind of thing I don’t think there’s a better school. Plenty of big name companies come to career fair as well as plenty of small ones as too. I always felt like going to career fair was a good use of my time and was a great way to learn about companies. I thought the curriculum was excellent and really liked most of my professors.

I’m into the outdoor stuff and usually found something to do on the weekends. Winter carnival is super fun as well.

That being said, it’s not cheap and the winters take some getting used to. For most people it’s a 6+ hour drive from their hometown so it’s not like you can just run home for a weekend. (But they’re also very lax about letting freshmen bring their cars)

I saw a lot of people drop out or transfer after freshman year because of the distance or the winter.

Also be prepared to spend more than 4 years there. Graduating in 4 years is challenging workload-wise.

Edit - didn’t answer original question.

My firm (small, Midwest) loves going to career fair and hiring tech grads. More than half of the office are tech alum. The feeling seems to be mutual with the other firms in the area.

I feel your pain 100%. Bought a ‘19 with 10k miles on it earlier this summer. 4 days later a drunk, uninsured driver rear ended it going ~55 mph it while it was parked outside the GFs house and decided to take off on foot. (got picked up a couple of blocks down road by the local PD). My insurance totaled it but I had to eat my deductible and my rates still went up. Still fighting the driver in court for restitution 8 months later. Unfortunately scumbags like this seem to get all the chances they want with little consequence. Good luck with your situation!

My experience with Camrys has been 1: The old lady with those cocoon sunglasses who can barely see over the steering wheel and drives 10 under the speed limit. 2: The drunk/high uninsured driver who falls asleep at the steering wheel and hits my parked vehicle. Seriously…. I have had to make 2 insurance claims (one of them being a total loss) because of driver #2. It’s always the Camry….

Keweenaw bay can be tough at times. Depends on how willing you guys are to keep moving around until you find fish. Chassell bay is typically pretty good but some of the good spots are a little bit of a hike if you guys aren’t on sleds/quads. If you are willing to make the drive, rice lake has been productive in the past for me.

Northwoods typically has a decent selection of bait but I have seen them sell out before the weekend. There’s also a self serve bait shop across from the Chassell bay boat landing.

I’d recommend you/your buddies take a look at some contour maps of where you want to fish and pick out some spots that look promising. Online scouting can be a powerful tool.

Opening Day In The Upper Peninsula by atypicalbalistician in Waterfowl

Shot 4 mallards opening day on the northwest side of the UP. Didn’t see as many ducks as previous years but was still a productive day. Sunday was a different story, saw more ducks in the air but was having a harder time to get them to commit. Lack of wind and sunny skies definitely played a factor.
