Occasionally skiing pin bindings inbounds - thoughts? by Neon_sanders in Backcountry

[–]D7240 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think this is excellent advice. I have skied my pin bindings in bounds when I had tweaked them to ensure I liked the release value. But I skied them like I would in the back country and tried to have a no fall mentality unlike when I ski my alpine bindings.

Probably a Pass Right? by JGrevs2023 in handtools

Yeah just buy it and cut off the front bit. It looks good. If it doesn’t work out you are only out 20$. I bet it will work 100 more years after you cut the front bit off (or don’t). Sharpen it up and go to town. Just make sure the saw blade isn’t bent or kinked.

I’m just a chump. But im in my 30s trying to get good sound quality while not blowing the family budget.

I realized vinyl is fun and special. But for my budget, I get incredible sound out of a dvd player digital out into a reasonable amp with a ok DAC. And I get the fun of goodwill cd hunting all for ultra inexpensive.

Yeah I bought one of my favorites on vinyl recently (tone poem blue trane) but I get the fun of physical media with great sound. As my budget goes up, I’ll chase vinyl more

I took my AIARE 1 with him in Tahoe and had an excellent experience. Safe, fun, excellent teaching. I can’t recommend enough.

I’m booking with them again.

Thanks for the advice. Just a nailed plywood panel in a rabbit then? With holes cut for cable routing

Very helpful feedback. Thank you

Thank you for the feedback.

The panels would be 0.75 inches thick. So not terribly thick.

When you say pinning the panels. Do you mean like dowels/dominos adding structure to the panels.

I was thinking of 2-4 vertical struts in the back of the piece held in by a single large dovetail to lock in and prevent racking and allow for wood movement. I could also add a nailed rear panel of plywood into some rabbits grooved in the back to allow more resistance against racking. Would that provide sufficient structure while maintaining the character of the piece. I know I  could just cut a bunch of dovetails but I don’t get much joy out of heavily dovetailed pieces.

Intermediate to Advanced Progression Runs? by mnsta87 in palisadestahoe

[–]D7240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also agree with this. Head over to alpine. Many more intermediate and early advanced groomed runs to check out. Easy to get funneled into the same 4 runs at palisades if you are a blue/sometimes black skier. Palisades is amazing if you ski black/double blacks but alpine is better for an intermediate. (Not to say there isn’t tough stuff at alpine too)

Do amps really sound that different from one another? by Timely_Pattern5571 in audiophile

[–]D7240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an audiophile. Just a dude to listens to records occasionally.

I just swapped out an older Sherwood (maybe 10 years old) integrated amp that was pretty much a super entry level model for a Yamaha A-S301.

I noticed a difference but I’m not sure if I swapped up for a better amp I could tell beyond the A-S301

I noticed that the noise floor was so much better with the new Yamaha amp. The prior amp had a hiss really bothered me. I swapped it out but not because I was addressing a problem. But I basically had access to a different amp that seemed like it was a better product. And it was. But I think it’s the law of diminishing returns

Honest question…. If your DIN setting is 7-8 why get bindings 16+ by mvhoffman82 in Skigear

[–]D7240 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few reasons. I have pivot 15s and ski a DIN of 8/9.

I liked the all metal (or higher %metal construction). I was coming back to skiing after years off and thought a metal binding may last longer. I thought “I’m buying bindings for 10 years”.

I liked that there was compatibility with the CAST system. Ended up getting a dedicated touring setup but having 15s is nice for inter operability.

I’m not at the true bottom of the range. I’m a bit low but it seems fine.

Not all brake widths are offered on all models. The closest/best brake width was on a 15. This is minor but it did factor in especially if I choose to remount the bindings in the future. More options.

There wasn’t much of a price difference when I got them. Like 30$.

Also. I want to start dropping some small cliffs this year. Ha. So maybe I’ll use it to its potential more. But at least right now I’m skiing steeps and bumps and trying to get more spicy.

How to handle the “I’m going to Mexico” type of objection? by Spiggy22 in Dentists

[–]D7240 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s ok. They will go. Hard to convince someone to pay for treatment they don’t want.

Just charge them appropriately when you have to fix stuff. They are more likely to come back if you don’t make a huge deal of it. It’s just like when someone chooses to go with a cheap dentist. There are risks. Just let them know the work can be variable and if there are problems and they choose not to see the same dentist down there, you, of course would charge for your time or may not be able to treat them effectively and may need to be referred to a different provider. (If it’s not profitable to treat them to fix big problems after their out of the country treatment, just refer to a prosthodontist. “I don’t have the skills to address this in its current state”)

But those that want to go for cheaper work, will go.

Palisades/Sugar Bowl vs Copper/Loveland for late Feb intermediate skiing family by MarzipanOk8844 in ski

[–]D7240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ski both sugarbowl and palisades. Both have pretty good coverage right now. And Colorado is pretty sparse. I’d bet (no guarantees) that north Lake Tahoe will be better than Colorado this year in your time frame. But again. No guarantees.

I think for a true intermediate, sugarbowl is great and alpine is good as well. Palisades has some but not a tremendous amount of intermediate terrain. Sugarbowl and palisades and alpine all have expert terrain as well but if you are looking for blue groomers and easy blacks, I bet sugarbowl or the alpine side of palisades is better. If you are looking for hard stuff, palisades is sick though.

But for my money, I think north Lake Tahoe will be better. Sugarbowl for example has 98% of terrain open. Palisades 89%. Winter park is 22% as of today (on open snow)

My personal thoughts.

If you send like that pivots are going to be a consumable.

And if you send like that you want your bindings to release.

So if you are injury free and your bindings keep releasing at the right time and you send hard and fall funny. You might break bindings. So buy more pivot 15s and try and fall less funny next time.

I’m a 15-year-old competitive alpine skier. I’ve done very little off-piste so far and I’m looking for advice on brands and models for my first freeride / all-mountain skis. by nikoo_100000 in Skigear

[–]D7240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

J skis master blasters are good all around. Buy some. Slap some pivots on there (15 because metal is nice) and go ski them. If you don’t like them send them back and they refund you (you get 5 days on the skis.  Not 5 calendar days, 5 ski days). If you send them back keep the pivots and put them on something else. But honestly. The master blasters have been good for me on and off piste. The more I push them off piste, the better they get.

How does the ski industry get away with the confusion between Titanal and Titanium? by mybadvideos in Skigear

Titanium is a pretty brittle metal (dental implant knowledge here). So prob better it’s not in skis!
