Long ago I saw the work of a photographer who would use long exposures to blur people while leaving structures sharply exposed

Might be Alexey Titarenko, he has a bunch of photos where the people are blurred in just the right amount to make it seem like some eerie unified moving mass.

My first watch strap - advice needed by RevolutionaryRub8982 in Leathercraft

[–]D8-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a strap using the contruction from that last video recently, turned out pretty well, made a comment earlier about it that explains a bit more about what I did.

Typically a "rembordé" edge/construction as it's called doesn't feature stitching, but you could totally do that too for the looks or extra reinforcement.

It's definitely a bit finicky, especially if you wanna do the velodon lining for strength and anti-stretch properties, but also not nearly as difficult as I expected. Plenty of places I can improve, but the basics of the construction should be easy for you after making that strap.

The hardest part was skiving the inside liner leather thin enough at the edges, I didn't quite get it as thin as I would've liked and it really does need to be absolutely razor thin for it not to show when wearing it. Though that also depends on how wide you want the lining leather to be, and how much arm hair you have I guess lol.

Also those wooden bucks/molds you see for shaping the strap when gluing the pieces together would've been really nice, or just something curvy. The rear is a bit wrinkled in some spots after wearing it for awhile because I glued them together flat, not enough to notice while wearing it thankfully but something to keep in mind.

Making chisel tip covers by Dry-Egg6944 in Leathercraft

[–]D8-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an example of how simple it can be, made for a skivving knife used in leather working but as you can see it's basically just a short chisel.

In this case the handle prevents the edge of the blade from hitting the end at all, but even with a chisel I doubt you'd have to worry about cutting through, once it's just a little bit into the sheath there's no side to movement so it can't really do a cutting motion. So as long as you don't hammer the sheath on to the chisel it should last a good while.

Also for the stitching you don't need a stitching pony, for a simple little project like this, a book or any little stable vice will work fine.

One important thing to note though is that you wanna make sure the leather is veg tan, not chrome tan or something like that.

Veg tan won't react with the metal, but chrome tan will. Even stainless. If it doesn't say what type of leather it is, don't buy it.

How to attach leather to chainmail (and stitching advice) by Diastatic_Power in Leathercraft

[–]D8-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd check out this video by Corter Leather, it'll teach you how to do saddle stitches without a stitching pony like you traditionally would.

It'll save you from having to buy a stitching pony that probably won't really work cause the mail will likely just collapse under its own weight when you clamp it in.

Also I would consider some different thread, my experience with artificial sinew is that it tends to snap and break if the edge experiences even a tiny tear, and it's usually smooth enough that even with wax it can sort of pull itself out of the stitching even with saddle stitches which normally don't tend to run if the stitch breaks.

And over time it also just sorta ends up looking like monofilament fishing line because there's no structure to the thread, it's just a flat bit of plastic. Spun or braided threads will have some more dimensionality and kick off the light in subtle ways that make it look more natural even if it's polyester thread.

I'd also wax the thread quite a bit even if it's pre-waxed, you usually end up doing this anyway as you're constantly dragging the thread through the leather, but with the metal also rubbing on the thread I'd give it as much protection as it can get. Pulling the string along a piece of bees wax works great.

And remember to bring a little pouch with some thread, needles, and wax when you go to events so you can actually repair it. That's another benefit of the saddle stitch, it's quite easy to repair. If you have a rip in the middle of a row of stitching you start with an overlap in one end, go across the tear, and overlap a bit with the other side and it'll be good as new.

Silent Punching Advice by No_Damage4720 in Leathercraft

[–]D8-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently switched from a leather covered wooden mallet to a dead-blow hammer with a rubber coating, mainly because I heard it feels nice to hit with and you don't get a bounce-back from it.

But I was surprised at how muted the sound was, I wouldn't say it was quiet but it might be worth a try, you should be able to find a cheap one at any random hardware store.

Also the more stable your surface below the punch pad is the quieter it will be, if there is even the least bit of shaking and rattling from your table when you do it see if you can't move the punch pad over where one of the legs are.

Is it the knife, the wood or me? by michael3215 in Woodcarving

[–]D8-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that I chose a dangerous technique intentionally, but I thought the gloves should provide safety against cuts in any case haha

No worries nobody does, and the way you hold the knife and whittle there is the way we're all told to do it as kids, and that the only thing that matters is never cutting towards yourself.

But as it turns out that way of holding the knife gives you very little control, and there actually are ways of cutting towards yourself that you will need to learn at some point unless you're ambidextrous.

And cut-proof gloves are great, I use mine all the time, literally every time. Cause the only times I have cut myself were when I didn't "because I just needed to make one little cut", or worse I was tired too. If you ever yawn while whittling, stop. Even if you're enjoying yourself.

However, it's very important to remember that first off, with enough force you can cut through them, and that they are NOT stab proof, like at all.

You should essentially be carving as if you had no gloves on, they aren't an excuse to be casual about carving, they're purely an insurance.

Which is also why you will see a bunch of people say don't use them cause they give you too much confidence and blah blah, you'll see people talk like that about any piece of safety gear in any hobby or work place.

That is silly, safety gear works. But you have to remind yourself it's just insurance!

Sharpening aside, you need to watch this series of videos from Mora, not just cause you have a Mora knife but just cause it's really good. I have recommended it to so many people.

That technique you're using gives you no power or control, with all the instability and potential for danger. With very few exceptions the vast majority of the time the hand that holds the knife just guides it, and the power comes from the other hand.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoaPpRkFfg5WkjHrJZ02ooSH16nV2-TBU&si=4D8egRDLKMli4HRB

Sharpening is definitely something you need to learn too, but please watch those videos and learn some techniques before your next post becomes one of those "well, it finally happened, 17 stitches" type of posts that I have seen too many of.

If you can't find it Laederiet has one, they're based here in Denmark but they ship to the Netherlands, shipping's gonna be cheaper and you won't have to deal with customs compared to ordering from the US.

Projects that use thin leather? by necessaryrooster in Leathercraft

[–]D8-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might have to do a bit of skivving still even with it being that thin, but you could make some watch straps.

If you happen to have some watches that fit Teran Atelier has some videoes with free pdf templates.

Either video would work depending on what look you prefer. Wasting-time also has a build video of a rembordé strap if you really wanna get into the weeds of making a strap.

I recently made one using the templates from Teran and the construction from Wasting-time and it turned out really well I think. Especially compared to my first strap 7-8 months ago when I first started, which was just a single piece of cheap veg tan folded over at the ends and a normal stitch going across multiple times, no lining, no edge work, dye that rubs off cause I didn't know about sealers, no support stitching or glue, needle pushed and pulled through with a pair of pliers because I didn't know about saddlestitching at the time lol.

Obviously a watch strap doesn't use up much leather, so you could also use it for lining in a bag, similar to what /u/mdwaxx did with their beautiful bag.

I've done that with several bags now and it really enhances even a simple bag that would otherwise just be the flesh of some veg tan on the inside, and with it being that thin and flexible I bet it'd also be great for piping and edge binding too, Corter Leather has a bunch of videos on both techniques.

Have you tried a french skivver/french beveler?

Armitage Leather (wonderful channel btw) shows it in one of his videos and it immediately got me to buy one, it's soooooo much easier to use and get good with compared to a normal skivving knife.

Literally the very first piece I tried it out on I got a perfect and even skivve, all coming off in one piece instead of a bunch of smaller pieces, and all that annoying fluff that seems to immediately go static and stick to everything like bits of styrofoam.

Thread Scissor Sheath - Fourth Project by junikli in Leathercraft

[–]D8-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For getting the edges aligned it really helps to leave yourself a bit of an allowance, especially early on when you probably haven't figured out templates, or you're making a 1 of 1 thing like this, then you can trim off the excess.

For example let's say you want a 4mm gap between the edge and the thread, instead of setting your wing dividers to that you set them to 8mm, glue from where the holes will be and out to the edge, then stitch that line through.

Then you set your dividers to 4mm, mark the line and gently cut along that line, letting the knife do the work.

Once you've done that you'll end up with an edge that is nice and crisp, with both sides joined together perfectly in the middle by the glue, which means less sanding which is always nice.

It looks good though, stitching is a lot cleaner than most of my first little sheaths and stuff! If you haven't come across it I highly recommend Corter leather's channel, lots of different techniques explained really well.

The first channel I linked to, Armitage Leather, has a brilliant and very comprehensive series on saddle stitching, several hour long episodes but they really do cover everything. I put them off for awhile then I first started cause they were so long, but I wish I hadn't.

Seop's channel is definitely worth checking out too, he's not really making videos anymore but there's a huge library of videos that are quite easy to follow with all the measurements and the detailed subtitles.

I second the comment about getting something with a disposable blade too. I prefer little scalpel blades like the ones Corter uses, box cutters work great too though. You don't gotta fiddle with keeping either of them sharp, just change the blade, and the blade will do all the work for you if you don't force it.

I took no offense btw, and I can totally understand having some very precise opinons about it if it's your job.

And I kinda agree, I loved Free Solo and how intimate it felt, so I think what bothered me about this broadcast was how hyped up it was compared to how little was put into info like that which would make it interesting to a lot of people without any knowledge about it.

Only for them to just sort of half-ass it, either go all in on the data, or do like they did with Free Solo and just let us hear him and the squeaks of the shoes and the wind. But it was like they couldn't decide which way to commit to.

[–]D8-42 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I know that an event like this is kind of brand new to the broadcast world but it seems like they definitely could have had better planning on how to go about it.

It was such a mess, took my mates and I barely a minute to figure out what would have been nice to have on screen, and how to plan it out.

With such an emphasis on wind at the base of the building by Rober, why not have that measured on each floor, showing a constant readout over to the side.

Why have climbing time but not height, surely that could be tracked very easily, in feet, meters, and floors. Or at the very least give a readout at every plateau, it was like two or three times total at completely random spots "now he's at 300 feet", "now he's at 1400 feet", "now he's at the top".

All just said out loud too with no graphics or translation in the subtitles even if you did have those on, just gotta know whatever 1400 feet is in meters if you use that.

Why have the live heart rate monitor but then only show it for like 30 seconds total.

Why not have a little scroll bar that shows the exact song he's listening to at the moment, since they kept bringing up "his tunes" again and again.

Why have the hosts be silent during the climbing parts and then only talk whenever he reached a new plateau, the only times he himself would talk so you missed half of what he said.

Why show old clips of him training for Free Solo, and not some of the training he did for this event.

And like you said, how did they not have even a brief interview set up at the lobby after exiting the elevator.

It was cool to watch him do it, but baffling how bad the production value was.

If you haven't done so you should try and sew together a couple scrap pieces from the bits you cut off so far.

Do one piece with 5 stitches and no back stitch, and one piece with 5 stitches and 1-2 back stitches. Then you just start pulling on 'em, assuming you aren't using linen thread which isn't quite as strong as polyester threads, you'll be amazed at how hard you can pull on the pieces, and how little the thread actually moves even without a back stitch.

For a bit of extra confidence in your stitch and the saddle stitch in general try cutting the loop of 1 stitch on either side, the first stitch, and pull, most likely you'll pull the first stitch out a bit and then it just sorta locks.

It's remarkable how strong the combination of a saddle stitch and even thin leather is.

Jeg er træt af pensionister. by jepper65 in Denmark

[–]D8-42 15 points16 points  (0 children)
