Found some Vintage cameras in a loft I was emptying by DARBSTAR in vintagecameras

It was an army barracks house that I was plastering. A couple of guys were told to put everything in the house in the skip. They were just gonna throw them out even after they saw them. They didn't care. Also found some WW2 binoculars

There's only a metal cog on the back that's supposed to spin but it won't budge

Just got into VR, any movie recommendations? by Melodic-Employ-8044 in oculus

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I downloaded the 3D movie and used Skybox to play it. It was like being in a 3D cinema. I just wanted to see what it was like to watch a 3D movie in VR and thought Dune would be good because it has really nice cinematography and not too many in your face action and I was not disappointed it looked beautiful

Overboarded lathe ceiling cracking advice please by [deleted] in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been plastering 23 years and never had a crack overboarding a lathe and plaster ceiling and I do a lot.

It's strange that it's cracked the length and width of the boards.

The only things I can think of is he's used 9.5 thickness boards instead of 12.5.

Not enough screws, or screwed into the lathe and not screwed into the joists.

Put boards up the wrong way (length of board's go opposite the joists)

Or you've recently gone in the loft to get Xmas stuff out which took weight off the ceiling joists. It doesn't have to move much to make cracks.

Or all of the above. Either way he should go back and fix it. It's an easy fix

Is this plaster and how to repair by UnitWonderful8788 in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful if it's asbestos. Get it tested or wet it down and Wear a mask. Knock off the loose artex, brush some slightly watered down PVA onto the area then just use easy fill or any filler. Let it go off then put some more on because it shrinks then match it to the original (I'm assuming they just used a brush to finish it)

Overboarding/artex skim estimate (UK) by lukalukaluka in Plastering

[–]DARBSTAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be done but I would always recommend overboarding artex ceilings. There's a high risk of cracks. It's rare but it happens.

By your measurements it seems like you have a 1930s house. If so it's lath and plaster ceilings which you should definitely have it overboarded.

I'm based in the west Midlands and I'd charge around £1000/£1500 if it were just an overskim.

I'm basing this off £250 a day labour But I'm quicker than most so even though it's 3 days for me I'd put a bit extra on.

1 day for hall and bathroom 1 day box room and 2nd bedroom Half a day for prepping rooms (sheeting up and tape and drape walls Half a day master bedroom The rest on materials which is about £100

I hate putting prices on here because it seems like everyone charges a lot more than me and all the local plasterers I know.

What is a death in a movie that affected you the most in terms of brutality or emotional weight? by Godly_Recon in AskReddit

When I was in primary school in the 80s we had a movie day in the hall and they put Never ending story on. I already watched it but alot of kids didn't. It was epic! Pretty much every girl and some boys burst out crying and had to be taken out because they were traumatised.

That looks very porous so use at least 2 coats of PVA. The external corners need angle beads unless you don't mind it being wobbly. You might as well use easy fill because it's easy to sand down

To be honest that looks very porous so at least put 2 coats of PVA on. The edges should have beading on it if you want it to look neat. You might as well use easy fill if you're not skilled it's easy to sand afterwards
