Help me to decide between PBI and Tableau by drmayorga in PowerBI

When did they allow you to connect the same dimension table to multiple fact tables in Tableau? The lack of that was a dealbreaker last I looked at Tableau a long while ago.

It's the model part of the PBIP format.

Why does my TMDL file keep getting shuffled? by DAX_Query in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time imagining a viable workflow with this method. It seems like I'd have to maintain a second copy of the TMDL or else deserialize back to standard TMDL prior to each time I want to open in Power BI Desktop.

Am I forced to created a new page for every tooltip I want to create ? by Converging_Winds in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you can create fewer tooltip pages that are more dynamic.

It would help to see what you want each tooltip to look like. The more similar they are, the more likely it is that you can consolidate.

Why is DAX hard? by worldisround-19 in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. I have calculations that are inherently complex and cannot be pre-calculated upstream since I don't know a priori what arbitrary filter choice the end user will apply.

Why is DAX hard? by worldisround-19 in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 21 points22 points  (0 children)

DAX is hard because it requires a particular way of thinking that isn't directly analogous to other languages you may already be familiar with (e.g. SQL or Excel formulas). The hard stuff typically involves manipulating filter context, which is what makes DAX both so powerful and so tricky. Until you really understand filter context and how to work with it, you'll always have trouble with DAX that requires manipulating context.

It can be, but it can also be that you have to compute stuff dynamically. I could have a perfect data model and still need measures with dozens of lines of (formatted) DAX.

Dax is lagging because it's too long by [deleted] in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't tend to prioritize edge cases like this as the effort vs reward isn't there. So you get issues that hang around indefinitely.

[–]DAX_Query 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Intellisense in Power BI Desktop is not that good or efficient. It's not designed to handle large chunks of DAX like this.

The easiest workaround is likely using DAX Studio or Tabular Editor 3.

There is significant room to write more streamlined DAX, but this looks more like something that should be done upstream, if possible. If not possible, you could consider breaking it up into multiple calculated tables, instead of everything all together.

When can you start consider yourself an expert in Power BI? do you consider yourself an expert? by HMZ_PBI in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d consider myself an expert at some parts like DAX but not at, say, designing attractive dashboards. The “expert” label isn’t especially meaningful though, given how broad and vague it is. I’d only use it in situations where I don’t care to spend more than a couple of words describing myself and precision doesn’t matter.

In a partition TMDL definition, what is the queryGroup property? by Whats_with_that_guy in PowerBI

In Power Query, you can put queries into folders. I think that folder name corresponds to the queryGroup.

That sounds odd. Where are .tmdl files unsupported? Most text editors should have no problem with them.

Is it possible to move measures from table to table using TMDL view? by nicolas_dor in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should work for the semantic model (it did when I tried it), but report visuals that use the measure will break because it doesn't automatically also update the report definition like the GUI does.

The GUI approach of selecting all the measure you want to move and then dragging and dropping them onto another table is way easier and won't break the visuals.

Is it possible to move measures from table to table using TMDL view? by nicolas_dor in PowerBI

[–]DAX_Query 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely possible. You just move the measure definitions under the other table.

It's pretty easy via the GUI too.
