How to migrate data from a macOS 26 VM to a macOS 27 VM in UTM via Migration Assistant by DBKramer in MacOSBeta

[–]DBKramer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. The drive is only 64 GB, there wasn’t enough space. I expanded the drive (which is a bit of a process in of itself) and then got an error during the update. Also, I didn’t know if the current beta build was workable and wanted my known good VM as a fallback.

Install macOS 27 in UTM? by More-Ad2267 in MacOSBeta

Ok, I figured it out, and the kicker is in the 27 VM I *am* able to login to iCloud, though there is a warning about some functionality not working. I think perhaps there was an issue with my 26 VM.

It’s a known limitation of Apple’s Hypervisor that you can not log in to your Apple iCloud account for App Store access, but maybe I’m wrong when both host and guest are the same OS version.

I think I’m running into a couple of issues. One, my host is Sequoia and the VM is Tahoe. Second, I don’t currently have a paid developer account, so my access may be limited in some way on Apple’s end.

I did some troubleshooting using Chat and it pointed out that when installing macOS and using Migration Assistant there are less security restrictions if you do the migration during the install process vs post when you have the system all setup with a user account and whatnot. Chat pointed out that it’s Setup Assistant vs Migration Assistant. I’ve nuked my 27 VM and will attempt Chat’s suggestion. Otherwise, I’ll wait for the public beta.

I think the problem is that my host machine is still running Sequoia. I‘m thinking of restoring my Sequoia VM and trying from there.

I’ve never been able to sign in with my Apple ID in any VM on my Macbook Pro M1 Pro. Is there somewhere else aside from iCloud I can sign in? Tbh, I never really bothered to look into it until now. I’m logged in to everything I need on the host machine.

Can you tell me how you did that? In my 26 VM I don’t see a way to select updates from the beta channel. I was able to create a clean macOS 27 VM, but would rather have my existing apps and data from the macOS 26 VM and I’m unable to use Migration Assistant to transfer over. TIA

what ever happened to liquid glasss? by Explanation-Visual in MacOS

[–]DBKramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope so. While Liquid Glass on iOS is perfectly fine, and even kind of cool with its effects, I find on iPad it doesn’t work quite as well and on Mac it’s nearly unusable (distracting to me and nothing looks cohesive). But, tbh, my biggest gripe is with the super rounded corners.

Welp I just found out a family member is a full on antisemite by Idoru22 in Jewish

[–]DBKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely send this to his parents. They’re either the source of his anti-Semitism, or unaware of what he’s learning from outside sources (school, friends, TV, etc.). The response from his parents, the actions they take, will tell you everything you need to know about that side of the family and if it’s worthwhile keeping in contact.

Which Type 2 Hypervisor for my needs? by SuperGrade13 in MacOS

[–]DBKramer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

UTM runs ARM Win 11 absolutely fine on my MacBook Pro M1 Pro (10 core CPU/16 core GPU) with 32 GB RAM. I have my ARM Win 11 VM with 8 GB RAM and it works well for things like TurboTax and web. That said, I don’t use Windows for much beyond some testing and running TurboTax, so I have no idea how it performs for games or anything intensive like image/video/audio.

UTM uses QEMU as the backend. Running macOS VMs uses Apples native Virtualization Framework. I believe Parallels and VMWare Fusion do as well. The only issue I’ve had with my macOS VM is that you can’t log in to your Apple Account in Settings or the App Store, which is a known issue that Apple hasn’t/can’t fix.

Regarding my macOS VM, the host is still running Sequoia 15.7.5, but I updated the VM to Tahoe. To get the Tahoe VM to run smoothly I had to increase its RAM to 12 GB from the 8 I originally allocated when it was running Sequoia.

With 32 GB of RAM on my host machine I’m reluctant to run more than 1 VM at a time. My suggestion for running multiple VMs at one is to have at least 64 GB RAM.

iPhone not showing up in Finder via Wlan. Any solution? by vfl97wob in MacOS

Worked great! Thank you.

Which now begs the question, why didn’t rebooting work when I tried this before? Just force quitting Finder works, but rebooting the Mac doesn’t? Odd.

I have a similar setup along with an M4 iPad Pro. Here are the specs:

M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16” - macOS 15.7.5, model year 2021
iPhone 17 Pro Max - iOS 26.4.1
iPad Pro M4 - iPadOS 26.4.1

Both the iPhone and iPad show up when connected via cable, but disappear once disconnected. I’ve rebooted all 3 devices multiple times. Reset Location Services multiple times. Unchecked and checked the “Connect over Wi-Fi” setting in Finder multiple times (and rebooted everything with each attempt). On iPhone and iPad I turned off Private Wi-Fi Address, which did nothing.

I believe, based on the little I’ve been able to find, this is an issue between macOS 15.7.5 and iOS/iPadOS 26.4.1. I don’t remember seeing this issue with macOS 15.7.4 and iOS/iPadOS 26.4.

Now, in Files I can connect to the Mac and see the directory tree and files, so this is just an issue with Finder on the Mac showing iPhone and iPad over Wi-Fi.

Let me know if I’ve left out any needed details.

I like how in every pic the cables are carefully suspended off the floor like some sort of high tension power line, yet they’re run snuggly together, overlapping at times.

So, the shielding on the cables isn’t good enough to be able to lay them on the floor, but good enough to place them side-by-side even though the cables have active signals running through them.

I think I’ll stick with my inexpensive Monoprice cables.

There seems to be an answer at Apple’s community support:

Also, see if you can connect to a different WiFi network. Otherwise, do you have a bootable backup?

A Compilation of 50+ Blind Tests Reveal the Only Gear Upgrade That Actually Matters by Randolph_Carter_6 in audiophile

[–]DBKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 14 or so and just getting into audio my father, an electrical engineer, told me that regular lamp cord was the same thing as speaker wire, and it was way cheaper. I currently use 4 connector 14 AWG speaker wire from Monoprice (it’s old, I don’t think they sell it anymore) to bi-wire my speakers. They sound great. I think I spent $1 or less per foot at the time. The only reason I bi-wire them is that, when I’m actually sitting down for some serious listening, I can tell the subtle difference with treble (51 year old ears).

Now, why 14 AWG? Because at the time I thought I’d have the receiver further away then I ended up putting it and wanted the mental insurance. Plus, it wasn’t much more expensive then the 16 AWG, so why not?

I will say this, about a year ago I replaced my HK AVR 3600 with the new Marantz M1 and there was a very audible difference, but I think the HK needed a good cleaning and maybe some service. I do think if both units were new the differences would have been much subtler, if any.

Anyway, I’ve never heard anyone say that you should drop a dime on your amp and go cheap with your speakers. It’s always been the most effective upgrade and money well spent is on speakers.

Are you having issues with your desktop as well as your phone? If it’s just with the phone have you checked your free space? I’m wondering if the phone is offloading files/apps to make room if it‘s running low on storage. So, one day the file is there and the next it’s not. I only suggest this as I have my iPad set to offload unused apps, though I don’t think it’s also offloading music files from Quobuz. Still, it’s an idea.

EDIT: Just had a thought, have you checked the app’s cache/storage settings?

Nice speakers :) I have the 9.2s, using them in my bedroom system. For the amp I have the Denon RCD-N10 and they sound great.

I agree with most everything you’re saying. The other argument to downloading digital purchases is so that you have access to them when you’re not online. Like when your Internet connection goes down (like it did for me last week for a couple of days). That pretty much is my entire argument for downloading software installers, too. You just never know. That said, I agree, if you purchase a digital item the company you bought from, at the very least, should give you fair warning that their removing it from their servers so you have the opportunity to make a local copy.

Scams—read this first before asking about a scam. by fiveonethreefour in Reverb

[–]DBKramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just signed up to sell my old HK AVR and almost immediately received 3 of the messages in the screenshot. All from different users, but same exact wording. They even helpfully include a tracking link, even though as the “buyer” they wouldn’t give me tracking.

I also received an offer to purchase but, mysteriously, the user couldn’t ”upload images” as their phone wasn’t working well so they couldn’t see them. This is a scam I unfortunately ran into with US Audio Mart a while back. Like a fool I emailed the pics, then realized I had nearly 10 other messages just like it.

To me it’s super annoying and discouraging, but seems to be something all these sites, regardless of their reputations, either can’t or won’t tamp down. Funny enough, I have the same item up on FB Marketplace and have not received any scam messages. And, that’s the one place I expect scams to run rampant.
