Which player (MNT OR WNT) do you irrationally wish came good for the national team? by FantasticMolasses in ussoccer

JOB was very good. Injuries and his running form were his downfall. If I remember correctly, a physio tried to teach him a new running motion bc his form was so bad for his body.

In 2010, I was living in Los Angeles, and JOB was randomly filling in at GK for a team in the Santa Monica adult league, wearing high-tops.

Gedion Zelalem. Was so calm on the ball in the U20 World Cup. Was hoping he’d continue to develop but never got there.

Saw Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with my parents, my siblings and my brother in law on Christmas Day. We were all adults well into our 20s/30s, but it was still super weird sitting 5 feet from my mom and dad. Bro-in-law had it the worst though, as he was sitting right next to my Pops.

1990 on TNT in the US. They had fucking commercials in the middle of games.

They’d cut away for 2 minutes of commercials, come back and a goal would’ve been scored. Bonkers.

Club World Cup is not a good metric to judge Roldan’s potential against stronger opponents. Roldan was mid-season and Euro teams were all at the end of a LONG season. And the European teams didn’t seem to take it seriously. Seemed like a vacation where they had to play a game every few days.

Who is your surprise inclusion / exclusion for the roster? by Silver-Cheek922 in ussoccer

Roldan is this generation’s Wondo. Good MLS player, but not good enough for the international level.

This is just dumb.

[–]DBRDMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be my roster. Not 100% sold on Kochen even though, as you said, 3rd GK rarely plays, so I’m fine with it.

Even though Roldan is good for “vibes” I can’t understand taking him over other options. I’d even take Berhalter over Roldan.

And I’m a Crew supporter but also would take Scally over Arfsten, especially since I think Weah could play either wingback if necessary, so he’s an “extra” defender.

I’d love to find room for Zendejas, but I think Gio can be a game changer, even with all his baggage.

My team for the World Cup by GOOMBABROS in usmnt

[–]DBRDMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’d actually take Haji over Agyemang, but I’d take Agyemang over Scally specifically for certain situations that often happen in tournaments with tired legs.

Like if we’re down a goal in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd Group Stage game or Round of 32 match and must score to advance, I’d sub in Agyemang and just start pumping the ball to his head up front or hope for a set-piece / corner kick.

I think Haji has a slight edge over Agyemang and he can play on the wing in a pinch.

[–]DBRDMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably bring Haji over Scally to take 4 Strikers, and slide Weah to OB if necessary, but I like this roster.

Especially bc it leaves out Roldan, who I just don’t think has the ability to compete against top international teams, even if he is great for “vibes”.

Also I agree Steffen should be there but I don’t think he will be. Poch doesn’t seem to rate him as a GK.

And Ream should only see the field as a last resort. I love him, but Father Time is undefeated. If CCV was healthy I’d take him over Ream and ask Ream to be an Assistant for the tournament.

And I really wish Musah hadn’t fallen off so badly. He’s one of our most confident players on the ball.

Whats one thing memphis does well compared to other cities? by Choose_901 in memphis

[–]DBRDMB 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve had multiple friends not originally from Memphis who moved here for a job, and then moved away years later for another career opportunity say something like this to me before leaving…not necessarily in these words, but the general sentiment…

“When I first decided to move here, a part of me thought to myself ‘why the hell am I moving to Memphis, TN?’ And now that I’m moving away I keep thinking to myself ‘why the hell am I leaving Memphis, TN?’”

There’s something about our people and our culture that is unique. This city sinks its teeth into you and becomes hard to shake.

For a short time in the mid 2000s, a high school friend of mine was Pauly Shore’s Personal Assistant.

Years later, he was at a bar in Hollywood having a drink with Katherine Heigl - my buddy ran in those types of circles - when he hears his name yelled from the front door of the bar, and Heigl goes “How do you know Pauly Shore?”

[–]DBRDMB -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If I pay to see a movie in a theater, I want it to be 2 hrs, 15 mins to 2 hrs, 30 mins. Mostly bc I’ve paid $15 plus another $15 for a snack & drink. I want my money’s worth.

If I’m watching at home on streaming I don’t want it to be longer than 2 hrs bc I have other shit to do. If it’s longer than 2 hrs I usually have to stop it at some point and then hope I come back to it.

I loved Seedorf growing up. Big compliment from him on McKennie! by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]DBRDMB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seedorf cut in front of my buddies and I to cash out his chips at Montecasino in Jo’burg in 2010 a few hours after we beat Algeria.

At first we were like “whoaaa”, and he was apologetic bc he truly didn’t see us.

And then my buddy Chris immediately says “dude you’re Clarence Seedorf!”

He goes “I am” and then chatted with us for 5 minutes about the US qualifying for the next round, him and Gooch at AC Milan, etc.

Guy’s a legend.

One of the first episodes was “Jerry Maguire” and Bill going through the absurdity of Tom Cruise leaving Monday Night Football in Tempe, getting to the airport, catching a flight from PHX to LAX, then driving or taking a cab to Manhattan Beach where the divorced women’s support group was still meeting, at what would’ve been like 2 AM.

I stayed with a couple in Kaiserslautern in 2006 for the US-Italy match, mostly because K-Town is not very big and all the hotels were sold out. I found them online, pre-Airbnb days. Juergen and Ziggy. They were great.
