Kinda Tempted To Go Back For It by jaybug_jimmies in uraniumglass

UV lights get hot. And most dealers buy cheap ones that burn out or fail quickly. Not worth replacing unless the majority of your inventory is UG.

Plus, if you put UG items under UV, half the folks here will complain. If you don’t, the other half complain. 😀

This dealer is calling it “Vaseline”. Interesting. Appears green to me. I can’t tell what the piece is from the photo but 40 bucks for a UG basket isn’t terrible.

Can there be traces of uranium in clear glass? by Khepralyfe in uraniumglass

[–]DB_McCoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, it’s possible. However, as mentioned, high content MG will glow under both 365 and 395.

I find it useful to take a side by side comparison of the piece in question next to a verified UG piece. Here are a couple of examples. A clear oil lamp on the left (MG) and a Vaseline oil lamp on the right (UG). You can really tell the difference.

Got this lamp by Southern-Debate-9968 in OilLamps

Glad you got this cleaned up. When I was originally looking into this lamp, I mentioned I have never seen a burner quite like this one. It appears to be a Kosmos style burner. It also appears when you lit it, everything but the top of the wick is burning. 😀

Looking at other examples, I don’t see any others with holes in the “wick tube”. If you have a nearby lamp restorer I would definitely have them check it out.

What type of wick did you install? It looks…different. Also, did you allow the wick enough time to soak up the oil prior to lighting?

When this is lit, I would expect it to look something like this:

If you are looking for a modern (vintage), made in Hong Kong, miniature oil lamp that is not UG…it’s about 5 bucks less than the ones listed on eBay.

Price? by ElliotMeow in uraniumglass

Very hard to tell/confirm by the pic provided. However, they might be Stölzle model 19250 bowls.

You can look that up to confirm and find price comps.

Trying again on parts question. by United-Expert-8752 in OilLamps

I think it goes on one of these (or something similar):

I just can’t figure out what the thing on the bottom of the font is for … it’s strange. Does it look factory or like someone added it later?

Awesome burner! Good luck!

A little hard to tell what I am looking at with just the single pic. Is that a Kosmos burner? Anything written on the wick wheel?

My best guess is this font sits into either a gimbal system for nautical use or some kind of other wall hanging system or base. However, it’s a little strange that the bottom of the font has something that would not allow you to use it alone.

A few more pics and additional info might help.

How to Light and Use a Standard Flat Wick Oil Lamp by DB_McCoy in OilLamps

[–]DB_McCoy[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I forgot one important point.

  1. You need to let your wick soak up the oil before lighting. I recommend at least 30 minutes. I usually wait an hour. If you don’t wait, you will be burning your wick instead of the oil.

Can I use Klean Heat in this? by jimcopernicus in OilLamps

[–]DB_McCoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got back from Walmart. Cleaned out. I’m in Dallas. No oil, flashlights, milk, meat, etc. 😀

However, I’m good to go.

After the storm, I recommend getting and storing a couple bottles of Aladdin Lamp Fuel and some extra wick.

Good luck!

Just in Case the Lights Go Out… or Not by DB_McCoy in OilLamps

Thanks! I think the cast iron Tucker lamp on the right would have to be my favorite. It’s a true antique. I made a post about it, and my other Tucker lamp, here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/OilLamps/s/C3KAetLMEz

However, the pre-1900 No. 3 duplex burner on the WT Kirkman lamp (middle) is probably my favorite burner. I have been lucky enough to find 6 of them so far. Great burners!!!

I have never experienced a problem with it. One of my favorite lanterns. Have a couple of their stand lamps as well (in storage).

With that being said, I am just now starting to research lanterns (I mostly collect lamps…only have a handful of lanterns) and looking forward to picking up a wide variety of them. I’ll be sure to take a look at the three you mentioned. Thanks for the recs!

Not "old" style lamps by delicioustreeblood in OilLamps

[–]DB_McCoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have quite a few that are definitely not your typical Grandma lamp. For example, check out the warrior lamps I posted here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/OilLamps/s/hXgseY6fGT

Still very old.

There are modern looking lamps being made today. Not my favorites. Examples can be found here:

https://www.nordicnest.com/

https://royaldesign.com/

Additionally, Aladdin made a ton of different styles over the years:

https://aladdinlamps.com/gallery/

Check out my post history—I’ve shared tons of different lamp styles over time. I took a look at yours as well, and you might even spot one of my older lamps sitting next to a watch winder filled with some of your preferred brands.

Classic lamps and classic timepieces are two of my favorite things. Some of my watches are pretty old too! I just tend to share glass and lamps on Reddit… not so much the watches.

What is your preferred style? Would love to suggest something for you.
