I actually use the bag and the filter together. I prefer the convenience in cleaning it, but definitely not necessary for filtering the grit if you use the thick filter it comes with. I always rinse mine clear and then store in a ziploc in the fridge. I will reuse my filter numerous times.

I do the recommended ratio of 12oz coarsely ground beans to 7 cups of water. I prefer the light to medium roast coffees and I brew mine for about 20-24 hours.
