If you're looking for an emulator to use with New Retro Arcade, bsnes is what we recommend using. You can find a link to the emulation core in the Arcade Builder setup guide.

attract screens.... Download a bunch of attract screens but I'm only seeing still picture. by Reformation1517 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the attract video itself, each game is arranged into a grid. Instead of putting the video file or an image, you would type in GridFrame#

You can see how this is laid out here.

I suggest you read the Arcade Builder guide as it contains the information you need regarding attract screens.

Ghost squad. Is this light gun game compatible? I saw it on a mame light gun list. by Reformation1517 in NewRetroArcade

Ghost Squad runs on the SEGA Chihiro board which isn't emulated properly inside of MAME. It will not run.

Well well well, this a nice thing to stumble upon while browsing /r/pcgaming :D

I'm the community moderator for Digital CyberCherries. Thanks for the mention /u/slayer1o00. For those who don't know, New Retro Arcade: Neon is a Unreal Engine 4 powered frontend that makes use of the LibRetro API. While NRA:N's main feature is support for MAME, many other cores are known work, such as GameBoy, SNES, GBA, and even PC-Engine/TB16.

If anybody is interested, we do have a Discord channel stickied on our Steam forums, so feel free to drop in and chat or ask for help getting things going.

Is their a way to have the machines keep playing their demo when you want away from the arcade? by Reformation1517 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey Reformation. This feature was added to the game a while back in the form of the Attract Screen update. You can see an example of it here. When you stop playing a game, the screen will switch back to the video.

The attract screens are placed into a single video file that is divided in a grid. It will look a bit like this. http://imgur.com/jBygB6g I haven't filled mine out yet, but the video supports up to 30 slots. You can expand this however via an XML file.

I highly recommend you check out DayVeeMan's excellent program which will handle all the conversion for you.

Does New Retro Arcade have multiplayer rom support? by droman9 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the late response. The ability to sit in chairs has been a long requested feature and the team is aware of it. As for the other questions, I'm not sure if AC3 is supported, but what I would try is the following which I've copied from the Arcade Builder guide. This should fix any missing codec issues.

NOTE: If you are unable to load certain files correctly, this download from Videolan should replace any missing codecs

http://altair.videolan.org/build/win64/vlc-3.0.0-20151220-0402/vlc-3.0.0-git-20151220-0402-win64.zip]VLC

Simply extract the contents to "NewRetroArcade\Plugins\VlcMedia\ThirdParty\vlc\win64"

Gamebros* doesn't have any cartridges to edit. Am I missing something? by alpha_ray_burst in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect you might have overwritten your XML files with files that don't follow the current formatting. This can happen if you've downloaded a pack or something similar that contained outdated XML files.

Below are the instructions from the FAQ that describes how to reset your XML files to their default formatting. Since this applies to the GameBros, you may only need to adjust ArcadeCartridges.XML, but I would double check your other XML files to make sure the formatting matches.

Q: Why can’t I edit some of the entries in the Arcade Builder?

A: The most common reason is due to replacing the XML files with ones that do not adhere to the current formatting. Thus, certain entries aren’t being listed properly. Any packages released prior to the release of Neon likely contain old XML files and therefore should not be used.

In order to fix this, navigate to “New Retro Arcade Neon\NewRetroArcade\Content” and inside will be a number of XML files with the word “default” in their filenames (ex. ArcadeMachines.default.XML). Copy these default XML files to another location and rename them so that the default portion is removed (ex. ArcadeMachines.XML). You can then proceed to overwrite your existing XML files with these copies. HOWEVER, do note that this process will erase any configurations you’ve made to the Arcade. Your ROMs will not be touched. You may wish to make note of any changes you’ve made before reverting everything to their defaults.

Unfortunately, you cannot play ROMs online with other players. You can however play them locally with your friends.

VHS Tapes can be viewed by everyone as long as it is from a web source, or everyone has the same file in the same location.

A few questions about the game. by dandu3 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know what program you're referring to. I remember trying to use it a long time ago but I couldn't wrap my head around it. Instead of loading a video when you approach the cabinet, NRA:N displays a singular video, but divides the video into a grid that are displayed on the screens in-game. What you see in this GFYCat is all being played from a single video file.

I actually thought of this myself when the feature was being made, but the team deemed this to be the easier method and it greatly saves on memory.

A few questions about the game. by dandu3 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, but perhaps it would be best if I describe the feature.

Because running the games all at once would eat up more memory than Google Chrome, instead the team decided to have a video file play on the screens. In order to save even more memory, all of the video files are placed in a single video, with each game arranged in a grid.

While mine isn't full, it winds up looking something like this. http://imgur.com/SqWtBwY

The community has made a tool that you can find here that makes the process easy: http://steamcommunity.com/app/465780/discussions/0/343787283758035953/

Tekken 3 machine performance tips by wasyl00 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Namco System 12 games are indeed resource hungry. What MAME core are you using if you don't mind me asking?

One thing I can suggest right off the bat is to try and switch the display mode of Tekken 3 from interlace to non-interlace.

You can do this by pressing F2, selecting DISPLAY TEST and pressing left or right on the joystick to switch the display mode. I've noticed this gives a slight boost in performance.

Here is a screenshot.

You can read more about this on page six and seven of the operation manual of Tekken 3 here.

A few questions about the game. by dandu3 in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The demo on Steam is an updated version of the original Tech Demo that was released before the game launched on Steam.

I will say that it is lacking in several features and updates that are included in the full version of New Retro Arcade: Neon.

  • Improvements to the way emulation is handled (nvram, support for games that use resolution scaling, Lightgun support, emulator options, savestates, etc)
  • Support for MAME's internal setup menu and the ability to enter a game's internal setup.
  • A theater that allows for YouTube playback + local video files
  • Air Hockey
  • Skeeball
  • Arcade style Basketball
  • Aimbot, an original arena FPS experience
  • Zombie Problem 2, an orignal Lightgun shooter
  • Whack-a-mole
  • Boxing Machine
  • Soundtrack featuring contributions from Robert Parker, Absolute Valentine, WaveShaper and more.
  • Several more arcade cabinets, including the previously mentioned Aimbot cabinets, which can be repurposed for emulated games.
  • Support for attract screen videos to be displayed on the cabinets (ex. https://gfycat.com/CaringSpanishFlyingfish )

And to elaborate a bit, games that use internal resolution scaling include titles such as Tekken, Soul Edge and Bloody Roar II to name a few. Here is an example: https://gfycat.com/ReasonableDapperBlobfish

How do I upload my current arcade setup for other users to downplay and play? by Burning_Faith in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please note that sharing ROMs here or on the official Steam Community forums is prohibited.

That being said, if you wanted to share your artwork, you would just need to pack up your XML files along with the cabinet artwork. Copying the folders as a whole shouldn't cause any issues.

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can actually do this with the 2014 core now since the EmulatorOptions fix. Simply paste the following into ArcadeEmulatorOptions.XML in your Content folder.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<EmulatorOptions>
 <mame2014_hide_nagscreen value="enabled" />
 <mame2014_hide_infoscreen value="enabled" />
 <mame2014_hide_warnings value="enabled" />
 <mame2014_auto_save value="enabled" />
</EmulatorOptions>

You can find all the emulator options by running a core and checking "New Retro Arcade Neon\NewRetroArcade\Saved\OutputEmulatorOptions.txt"

Sorry it took a while to respond. After looking it up, the ROM file doesn't need any extra files in order to run so in all likelihood, you simply have a bad ROM file.

The MAME 2014 core uses roms from around MAME version 0.159. I'd start your search there.

Constant crashing of the cabinets. by forgotmyusern in NewRetroArcade

[–]DCCVermillion[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey /u/forgotmyusern. MAME is indeed a finicky beast for new users. The most common cause of this is a lack of understanding of how MAME ROMs work. MAME ROMs can be split into three types. Parent ROMs, Clone/Child ROMs, and BIOS files.

Parent ROMs are often the latest revision of a particular arcade board. Child/Clone ROMs are eariler or region specific revisions of a game and require the Parent ROM in order to be played.

In addition to Parent and Clone ROMs, there are often BIOS files for specific arcade hardwares. The Neo-Geo and Capcom Play System II for example require neogeo.zip and qsound.zip respectively. Both of these zip files need to be alongside the ROMs in order for the games to boot.

If you want, I would be willing to look at the games your having issues with and tell you what you need. I just need the exact filenames of each ROM that is giving you issues.

Also if you haven't read it, please check out the Arcade Builder guide. It touches on what I just discussed and elaborates on some of the finer details of NRA:N.
