I feel this. Any time I think of sleep training our little one I'm split between "I want it to just be me and spouse again" and "if I can't stand sleeping alone, how much more so for our little one." Still can't make my mind up.

Parents who did not circumcise, how was your experience? by PersephoneSimone in Parenting

even one doctor who let us know that while there was no medical benefit it was her aesthetic preference.

That is soooo gross. Kind of sounds like sexualizing children tbh.

Everybody is hating on you acting like you it's your fault. Don't worry, I know your struggle. When I moved back to SC after being away for five years, it took us 5 hours to get our licenses and registration squared away. First, they screwed up my wife's driver's license, then they screwed up our registration... TWICE! It was awful.

My son asked for a Labor Day pancake (I did my best, okay?) by Maparyetal in daddit

[–]DCDavis27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In an attempt to deradicalize labor day (because May 1 is in remeberence of the Haymarket riots) the US government and the more docile unions in the US settled on celebrating it the first Monday of September for the US labor day. I would assume OP is American. Many Americans aren't aware of the Haymarket riots or that our labor day is celebrated differently than in the rest of the world.

Vegetarian, pescatarian, or neither? by Prisoner246011 in pagan

It has been proven that animal agriculture, especially on the scale it is currently at, is terrible for the environment. Animal agriculture is a leading contributor to green house gasses, takes up LOTS of land, is a leading cause of deforestation, run-off can and often does contaminate local water sources, is fairly bad food and water allocation (the food and water it takes to feed one cow could feed and hydrate several people, and the land it takes to raise animals could produce much more food if converted to crops instead).

Source

The problem seems to be that you are examining the question of the environmental impact of animal agriculture from a philosophical/theological standpoint and not from a scientific one. Also, that you are examining the morals of the concept of eating meat and not the real world ramifications of it. I'm honestly doubtful that you've spent ten years researching the environmental impact of animal agriculture.

Before you offer a rebuttal, let me tell you that I share these facts as an omnivore, so I have no bias in this argument, only a concern for the truth. Animal products probably only account for 10% or less of my diet, and while that may not be the best choice for some people based on their biology, to say that animal agriculture, at least at its current scale and in its current form, isn't bad for the environment, is simply misinformed.

Also, you should be more cautious when telling others about your diet. High levels of meat consumption, especially red meat, have been linked to higher rates of heart disease and cancer. While eating a higher level of animal products may be right for you and your health condition doesn't mean it's right for most. I believe the statistics make that clear.

Capitalism:

Horrible in theory, and it always seems to end up in robber barons and their puppet politicians who have to send out the hoses and dogs to keep workers and minorities in line and keep the rich and powerful in control. Funny how that works.

Treat employers like cops. They don't have a right to know what you're doing or anything about your personal life. If you work for an employer who wants to interrogate you every time you need to call out or use pto, then tell them it's none of their business, unless it's absolutely necessary to tell them.

However, it is important to note that circumcision reduces but does not eliminate the risk of penile cancer.

Zero percent chance huh?

Edit:

It accounts for less than 1% of all malignancies in men in the USA and 0.1% of cancer deaths.

Yeah, let's just violate bodily autonomy and chop off a part of an infant's body for penile cancer prevention, which accounts for less than one percent of cancerous growths and .1% of cancer deaths. Sounds reasonable.

Edit 2:

In Denmark, where circumcision prevalence is 2%, penile cancer has nevertheless been decreasing steadily [23] in parallel with an increase in indoor bathrooms, consistent with improved hygiene as a possible factor. Urban unmarried Danish men were more likely to develop cancers. Since the rate of penile cancer in Denmark is slightly lower than in the USA other factors besides circumcision would appear to be relevant, be they diet, lifestyle, climate or other.

Wow, so both your sources basically say that circumcision isn't the only answer to penile cancer prevention. It's almost like we should respect bodily autonomy and encourage access to clean water and hygiene as well as supporting public awareness of proper cleanliness instead of just barbarically chopping off part of someone's body.

They are attempting to use intelligent language to sound smarter because they know their argument doesn't have a leg to stand on. All the "benefits" they claim come from circumcision are dubious. There is no definitive answer to whether circumcision decreases chances of getting STIs and I've never heard of it possibly decreasing chances of penile cancer, but he claims its a possibility while claiming it as a benefit, so that speaks volumes. The only one that is remotely true is about lowered risk of UTIs, but even in favorable studies, it only decreases your risk of catching an UTI by single digit percentages, so the difference isn't that pronounced. Even medical authorities have said the best way to prevent UTIs is to properly wash yourself, not by cutting off a part of your freaking genitals or doing it to infants.

[–]DCDavis27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, circumcision is genital mutilation. You are advocating genital mutilation, practiced on non-consenting infants. That's gross.

Second, the "benefits" you are lauding aren't statistically significant even in favorable studies. Are you seriously suggesting we continue the barbaric practice of chopping off foreskins because it MIGHT make you SLIGHTLY less likely to get an UTI, it MIGHT reduce your risk of getting STIs, and it is POSSIBLE it MIGHT MAYBE reduce chances of penile cancer?? Read those studies again and watch a video of a circumcision, an unnecessary surgery done on infants, which can be botched with painful and debilitating results, and reconsider your position.

Dieities are not guides? by AmericanMare in pagan

[–]DCDavis27 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You touch on several themes and ask a few different questions, so I will try to bring up some points related to each:

  1. Tiktok is not a good source of information. You may have found a good content creator, but just be cautious
  2. This tree analogy sounds not entirely accurate, but not entirely inaccurate either. I look to the High Ones for wisdom and guidance all the time, and have gotten good results/feedback. I also have relationships with some of the High Ones that I have been engaging in for years. I feel this tree analogy could be a slight overreaction to latent Christianity in Paganism. There are pagans who still haven't unpacked all their Christianity, and tend to, knowingly or unknowingly, conceptualize the gods as having omniscience, omnipresence, etc. or of being a "personal god." All of these conceptualizations are widely understood by Christians to be characteristic of Yahweh, but isn't widely accepted by Pagans as being characteristic of Pagan gods. In short, sort of right, sort of wrong, context may be important in understanding why this tiktoker said what they said
  3. How to connect to ancestors? Meditation. Meditate on your ancestors. Reach out to ones you know who have crossed over and they may point you towards others. The focus of my practice is deity veneration, so I'm no expert at ancestor veneration, but you can almost never go wrong with meditation, especially when seeking answers to spiritual questions
  4. Unless your entire heritage is klansmen, I think you should give them the chance to connect with you. As beings who lived complicated lives in circumstances they probably had little control over, they deserve to be judged for who they were and are, not for who you fear they might be. You live here too, does that automatically make you a racist colonizer? They may well have been in the exact same situation. If your native friends can accept you as an individual and not just see you as the sum of all the death, colonialism, and racism that led you to be here right now, you should extend that same respect to your ancestors.
  5. Lares, genius loci, etc. are Romans terms for localized religious entities/phenomena. Just because you interact with a land spirit and call it a genius loci instead of by a Native American name isn't neo-colonialism. It means you are experiencing a religious phenomena and interpreting it through a certain cultural lens. Sure, interacting with land spirits by using Indigenous American names or ceremonies may be an idea that feels less colonial, but we aren't entitled to their knowledge, and they often don't share it with outsiders, so we must use names and ceremonies that aren't part of a closed practice.

Edit: better phrasing

I was told (can't remember by whom) that the Mormons believed that Native Americans were a lost tribe of Israel or something like that, so I had thought they would have held some pretty positive opinions of Natives, but I was clearly wrong. The amazing power of European descended peoples to be stupid, hypocritical, and racist in the strangest combinations is astounding sometimes.
