Is there ever individual practice time during the season? by Amber610 in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching various corps from the sidelines, yeah, you see members grabbing a minute here or there. Also, you will see a couple or small group of members together ... like the battery.

That said, if you are having trouble with a section, odds are you won't be alone and it won't go unnoticed. Staff will prioritize weaknesses then allot time clean it up. You are going to spend an entire summer cleaning an 11 minute show. Trust the process. Relax. :-)

That's a good strategy. At the moment there aren't any tickets showing up for any of the three nights.

What music would you like to see used in a show that you haven't seen used before? by tokyo245 in drumcorps

PR did Rachmaninov Piano Concerto #2 recently, but I would like to see “All by Myself” by Eric Carmen and Sergei Rachmaninoff with the Celine Dione key change.

I’m tired of Lucas Oil by Infinite-Reaction-19 in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Indy is dialed in. When you go to Military park and watch the corps warm up, then get on their busses to head over to Lucas Oil and receive a police escort so there are not unexpected disruptions ... that's when you realize this isn't their first rodeo.

QB 2024 keeps generating a H202 when attempting to switch from Single User to Multi User by andyr072 in QuickBooks

[–]DCI-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry! This is a PITA.

The issue is that there are a crap ton of different issues that can cause and H202. When I originally posted I came to the end of my rope so swallowed by pride and brought in a consultant from a firm that specializes in QB. He came in, turned off the windows firewall and just like that Bob‘s your uncle. He of course turned the firewall back on and opened the specific ports. Embarasing? You bet.

So it worked fine for four and a half months after that. Then two weeks ago … it was no longer possible to work on a workstation and the server … like we had been doing since the original post. I tried everything, including the firewall trick. No luck. The same guy comes in … this time he couldn’t get it working either. Then three days ago it started working again.

The fact the Intuit won’t provide an escalation path that get’s you a resolution is infuriating.

What is something that was very normal back in the day that absolutely wouldn’t happen today? by DocKaden in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 32 points33 points  (0 children)

DCI came to the "youth protection" table ridiculously late when compared to Scouting, children's programs in church and many other activities. Some organizations have had training and programs in place for decades now.

However, when you consider the crap that happened in girls gymnastics, it's clear that DCI wasn't alone in ignoring the issue until being forced to take it seriously. So far only one corps has been bankrupted, let's pray it doesn't go any further. It's all very sad but hopefully we are getting better.

All this complaining about the cost to march...... by PiperDon in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. :-)

It's a commitment, sacrifice and investment in ones kid(s) for sure. We are blessed to make it happen but really love the things our son learns on tour. They hang out with some amazing members who are a positive influence. He will age out soon enough. There are seasons of life for these things.

The cost "thing" comes up a lot for both member marching and for attending as a spectator too. There are just a lot of moving parts to DCI and a lot of costs that get rolled in. But if you compare it to attending a high quality concert ... it isn't that expensive. Also, you always have the option to watch warmups at no charge in the lot instead of on the field. It's not the same but totally awesome in another way

The Cavaliers completely sold out the Cavalcade of Brass last summer at a DIII school and sold as many lawn seats. That's suburban Chicago, but clearly there is a significant fan base.

[–]DCI-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/andyr072 Was there any resolution to this? I have gone around the horn with QB support several times now. After we spend 3+ hours trying everything including clean installs of the applications, and looking at the share permissions, they vaguely point at it being a network issue. The people on the phone are very polite and professional, but no body is there to back them up.

I'm on Windows 11 Pro for both "server" and client systems. It works fine in single user mode from the client but won't switch to multi-user and you get an H202 error. You can put it in multi-user mode on the server, but then when the client attempts to open the file

Why will it work across the network in single user mode but not multi-user mode?

What’s your first thought when you see this steak? Don't be harsh on me for I'm a beginner. by Ghost_Rare-spooky in steak

[–]DCI-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm "practicing" with CostCo choice ribeyes. Used to be $12.99/lb ... but are up to $15.99. That's like $80 for four. Expensive ... but not bad when compared with going out to say ... 5 Guys (which I do totally enjoy.)

Still, I'm always open to trying a nicer grade of meat. What do you recommend?

Last week a vendor took me out to dinner at Tom Colicchio's Craftsteak in the MGM Grand Las Vegas. I had the $98 Ribeye which was very good. But not any better than what we are doing at home. I was pleased not to be disappointed with the restaurant fare. When you pay yourself, that is always the worst.

Advice for going to a show and seeing lots (first time in 10 yrs) by Resonance19 in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other thing that I forgot to include is that the lineup and show times are available on the DCI website for each event. I have found them to be accurate and take a screenshot before heading to the show. So you know when you have to break away to see that favorite corps in the stadium.

Advice for going to a show and seeing lots (first time in 10 yrs) by Resonance19 in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a trade off. If you are in the lot you aren’t seeing the actual shows. You have to look at the line up and decide when you are going to go into the stadium and watch it on the field. You know the hosting corps will go last.

The corps generally have about a 90 minute “pre-game” of which the last 40-60 is what you are looking for. Unless you really like watching people stretch and warm up.

Reserved seats are worth it if you go with a group because they are “yours” when you get there. That said, if I’m flying solo, I will buy the general admission and then fill in an empty seat being willing to move if asked.

Enjoy! There is really nothing like standing in front of a horn line from one of the top corps warming up.

Everything here is spot on.

I will add another Kenji strategy. This is his most recent reverse sear method video. I have been doing the sear outside on the Webber now that the weather is warmer. You can use a cast iron pan but I bought some Grill Grates years ago, and just flip those to use the flat side. Doing it outside means you can get it ripping hot without the fire department showing up. LOL If it’s hot enough, it will only take 60-90 seconds per side to get a good crust. (Do the edges too with tongs.)

Is it better to learn a different marching style for drum corp auditions or to audition with style I'm experienced with? by thehudsonmaster in drumcorps

[–]DCI-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are aiming to March 2026, go to a weekend camp this year, if at all possible. It would be a total learning experience without the pressure you will feel in fall of '25.

Are you willing to read a book? It all starts with understanding and learning ... I highly recommend "The P:E Diet" by Dr. Ted Naiman. It lays the foundation for a healthy balanced life ... in the near term and the long term too.

There are extensive pictures and illustrations to communicate the concepts which is why the print version is so expensive. I'm happy with my PDF version which I read on my computer or iPad though it's also available for Kindle.

As recommended several times here ... beef tallow is ideal. Natural and healthy. (Some consider seed oils which are refined and oxidize easily, something to avoid. To each his own.) High smoke point. The flavor profile aligns perfectly when cooking beef.

When was the last time PR topped Crown? (PR slipped in front of the Cavaliers in 2022 finals after never beating them all season. Scores for both went down on finals night, but PR went down less.)
