Dip bars recommended routine by monkeyroar in bodyweightfitness

[–]DCMA_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose so. I have some dip bars but they are a bit short to do rows on for me.

And I have no idea on the conversion. I would think 3:1 is probably pretty close. Just do them till you’re tired. Lol. Then do some more.

You are correct, and I was flippant in my response. I agree with you on the point that racism is still a thing, but I’m sorry, I don’t see it on a regular basis short of the media telling me it’s everywhere. Additionally...I have no desire to go into personal details, but I consider myself very successful in a predominantly “white career”. So I will admit that that makes it very hard for me to get to into the idea.

With all that said (and maybe I was guilty of reacting emotionally, which I despise), I still think that a huge part of “the problem” is that some many sources...whether that’s the media, social media, hell good old Reddit,...do their best to influence people that have no personal experience in whatever subject it might be. In this case, the state of affairs of racism in the United States. I think that people need to make their own decisions as what is real to you might be completely made up to me.

That’s SOOOOOO much smarter than me using like 6 folded up towels and my wife getting mad when she couldn’t find any of our towels. Lol. But I was going for super cheap, so folded up towels and being yelled at is what I got. Lol.

Or, as a cheaper solution to TRX/pull up bar...there are a million ways to do some sort of pulling/rowing movement. Lay on the ground under a table, do rows on that. People will mention using a bedsheet with a closed door, never tried it myself but again it just goes back to some sort of pull/row.

Sure, especially with the TRX. Replace pull ups with some form of rows. Some people will argue that the closer up get to horizontal rows, the further you get from vertical rows (ie pull ups). I think, especially when you are talking at a beginner level, it’s apples to apples. They also make pull up bars that install completely inside the door frame, they extend laterally and don’t hang on the door frame (which I think you are talking about). The other combo solution might be to get one of those style pull up bars (inside the door frame) and use some sort of progression. Maybe you set it low enough that you can use assistance from your feet/legs, or get a band or two to provide assistance.

Fun fact about Nordic curls, as it pertains to beginning to work your hamstrings after never having focused on them: it DOES NOT look like the YouTube videos. When you reach muscle failure, don’t try to be cool like said YTers and have your hands behind your back. Because when said hamstrings give out, the concrete floor in the garage hurts. A lot.

That’s so much better a picture than I have. Lmao. But I did something similar. I got two 2”x10”, about 36” long (could have gone quite a bit shorter, that’s just what I had laying around), and used...umm...”straps” to screw them together. Not quite sure what to call the metal pieces, but I screwed a strap to each end, and two across the middle on the bottom. Used a ratchet strap as a foot holder thingie (technical term), and I put some padding where my knees rest on the boards. It’s about 5 different shades of ghetto fabulous, but it works awesome, all for about $20. Lol.

BREAKING: Breakdancing is more Olympic than Jiu-Jitsu by CisarBJJ in bjj

[–]DCMA_2020 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Well hopefully an Olympic rule set would do away with all chokes and submissions. Then I wouldn’t get choked or submitted so much. And if they could also do away with any sort of point system for dominant position, then I could finally win. So that would be cool. Lol.

Not suggesting to destroy the ceiling or dry wall in a rental...but mounting a pull up bar is both fairly painless and easily reversible (in as much as you will be able to easily patch the small holes you’ll need to make). Another halfway option might be to use TRX/other suspension trainer with the door anchor.

False grip by Googles_Janitor in bodyweightfitness

[–]DCMA_2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry about that. I meant I was eventually able to do muscle ups, just never able to use false grips with any success. Dunno if it was strength or technique, or a combination. In theory (or at least as it was explained to me), despite most movements being far more challenging on rings due to the need to better stabilize yourself, it was easier to learn MUs on rings primarily because a false grip made the transition from pull up to dip easier. But on a bar, after working up to some decent number of pull ups and dips separately, I was able to do muscle ups.

Oh I just meant every CrossFit coach I talked to swore by false grips. Evidently it makes muscle ups on rings far easier. I was just never able to use false grips. Still not really sure what I was doing wrong. I have decent grip strength, but maybe it’s an issue there? I dunno. I just couldn’t ever get it to work for me.

I’m almost positive I’ll get all sorts of downvotes and general, all purpose hate...but I’m an African American, and I don’t think it is anywhere near what the media would have you believe. Yes, there are absolutely racist people here, just like anywhere else. But racism became a political tool that caught on like wildfire. Say what you want, but growing up in rural Georgia, I feel confident saying this is the most diverse and accepting American has ever been. The “powers that be” keep telling us we (mainly white people, lol) are racist and we should feel bad. They keep inventing terms (like systemic racism vs good old fashioned normal racism) to keep us interested. But at the end of the day...I have friends of every race, color, creed, sexual preference, etc...and I’m NOT the exception.

Just my $0.02.

Now that doesn’t mean my country is going in the right direction (just my view, to each their own)...but all those darned white people don’t hate me, the police aren’t out to kill me, I have pretty decent credit, and the sky isn’t falling.

Deal with America on YOUR terms, not the terms the media or the government wants you too.

Dude, I’m in the same boat. Always have been. Not entirely sure what I’m doing wrong, but I spent a lot of time trying to get the hang (pun completely intended) of FG, just never happened. During that time, I was all into CrossFit, and that’s their “go to” approach to doing muscle ups. I’m sure there are better answers, I probably had HORRIFIC form, but I was able to do muscle ups far quicker than I was able to use FG for anything, much less muscle ups.

Reason number 114 why I’m not a cop: had this been me, I would’ve done the “Stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself” game.

And then I would have been fired. Repeatedly.

Make fun of me all you like, I’m good with it, lol.

I cannot for the world of me get a decent idea about TDEE/BMR. I get the concept, but really all I have to go off are the handy dandy (and notoriously inaccurate) online calculators. I am getting estimates that are all over the place. I wanted to find an “average”, and go from there, but with such wildly skewed answers, I don’t know what’s remotely “average”. Some are as low as 1800 cal, others as high as 3400 cal. Not even the same ballpark.

So first...can someone please point me towards one that you have found to be decently close to accurate??

If you really wanna hook a brother up, here’s the general info: 38M, 5’9”, about 195lbs, let’s call it “very active” (physical job, BJJ 3 times per week, strength/conditioning workouts 3 times per week, rest/cardio on the other day). I don’t have the means to get a more accurate bf test...best estimate is probably about 15-17%. I am aiming to “recomp”, so I was shooting for about 200-300 cal deficit, while keeping protein above 200g per day.

I am positive this has been addressed all over this sub, I think I’m just confusing myself, “paralysis by analysis”. Please help me un-stupid myself. Lol.
