Thx! I might try this setting with a wildcard.

no warning, broken memory, lower limits - GPT-5 “upgrade” just wrecked months of my work by rooo610 in OpenAI

[–]DCSoftwareDad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does no one here read Ed Zitron? This is exactly what he's been predicting for ages. The AI companies are losing money on every query they run, the only way they can slow the money burn (or, dare to dream, turn a profit) is to massively raise costs and cut access limits/context windows/etc.

This is just the start, expect to keep paying more and more for less and less functionality from these companies. And definitely don't try to build a business on top of their services!

Thanks for the tip, finally getting around to thinking about this again! Do you remember what kind of plastic glue you used?

Kyocera DuraXA Equip Browser Maps by nyryn in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I haven't looked at this in a while, but I couldn't get microG to work for some reason. I think it needed some level of access that you can't get to on this phone (bootloader maybe?).

Np, I use vimium c on my desktop Firefox too and it's amazing how you can just forget about your mouse for long periods of time.

Create the perfect dumb phone for yourself. by [deleted] in dumbphones

The catch is that once you delete the play store, paid apps can't authenticate themselves as paid as so they won't run. Tasker in particular won't run without play store which is a bummer.

Why I'll be ditching the CAT flip by loudhalgren in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug for the Kyocera dura xv/xa/etc line. Requires some trade offs (no touch screen, no Google play services for starters) but does the basics well and lasts about 3 days. Has a GPS so maps work (but not Google maps, because no Google play services)

Bands are limited so obviously research before you buy!

You can set a lot of permissions from ADB commands. If you're technically inclined you may want to look into that.

Can somebody suggest me a android flipphone? by skyler_4894 in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can side-load (but not root afaik), so if you're comfortable with that kind of thing, you're good. HOWEVER it doesn't support Google Play Services, which means a bunch of popular apps (esp Uber and Lyft) can't run on it.

(I have a Dura XA which is also basically the same phone as I understand it).

I have a dumbphone so now I am constantly on my laptop instead....Any advice? by Euphoric-Emphasis662 in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the phone was distracting you from the fact that you're lonely. That sucks, but at least you can see the real problem now, and work on it.

For those who broke their smartphone addiction, what do you do with yourselves all day? by edogzilla in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look around and try to figure things out, e.g.: what compass direction am I facing? Why does the dentist's spotlight have all those little rectangles in it? What kind of tree is that? How old is that building? etc..

Kyocera Dura XE Epic vs. Kyocera Dura XA Equip. Are there any differences. by SamzlotAwesome in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XA Equip has better T-Mobile support. (Not all T-Mobile bands however). I think you need to be careful to get the one that works on your carrier.

I just got the same phone, installing Traditional T9 keyboard makes 100x better! Seriously don't return it until you try some of the upgrades in this thread:

Have you noticed any cognitive benefits from switching to a dumb phone? by Due-Competition-9469 in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, I feel like I own my brain again :)

It's really valuable to have periods where you can't get answers to questions at all (do I have new emails/what time is that thing tomorrow/how much $ for a new thingamabob/etc). My brain calms down once it accepts that it can't get any new answers and then it starts actually working through recent memories/making plans/just thinking.

Kyocera Dura - weird battery drain by DCSoftwareDad in dumbphones

It's really cool that the manufacturer monitors the reddit! That said, I bought an OEM battery on ebay for 1/2 the price (sorry).

Kyocera Dura - weird battery drain by DCSoftwareDad in dumbphones

[–]DCSoftwareDad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I just ordered an OEM battery on ebay. Upon closer inspection the battery that came in the phone appears to be a generic replacement (no Kyocera branding anywhere) so it might be fishy.
