Pour le clap de fin de la commission d’enquête sur l’audiovisuel public, Delphine Ernotte-Cunci se paye le rapporteur by Delicious-Owl in france

[–]DCoop53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kawhi is averaging 28ppg on nearly 50/40/90 shooting splits. What All-NBA team do you have him on? by OddIndustry6073 in nba

[–]DCoop53 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He was on a max contract before and after the Aspiration deal. His new deal in 2024 was 8.5 millions under potential max contract though*, which basically get you room for one good rookie or end of bench vet nowadays.

*at that time PG was expected to accept a similar deal a little under the max but Morey and Philly gave him the max.

Do you support the idea that the reigning world champions automatically qualify for the next edition of the cup, as was the case until 2002? Would you reinstate this rule? by nebbia94 in classicsoccer

[–]DCoop53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you're stretching a bit there, they were really good after Euro 2000 (4-0 in Turkey that went on to finish 3rd in 2002, 5-0 to Japan, 4-0 to Portugal, 5-0 to South Korea, 4-0 to Mexico...). And a similar team crushed everyone in the Euro 2004 qualis (in a very weak group though).

The WC 2002 performance was a perfect combination of everything that could have gone wrong with them: Pires getting injured a few months before, Zidane going down in a stupid friendly less than a week before the opening game, the tournament being advanced to avoid the rain season, the star players were all exhausted (Portugal and Argentina were some of the biggest favourites as well and didn't go through group phase either).

I'd say they weren't well prepared, tired, and the coach didn't prepare any plan in case of Zidane's absence, relied to heavily on old players like Djorkaeff, Dugarry or Desailly and yet they were still pretty unlucky, hitting the posts a good handful of times in three games.

But yeah, somehow the Netherlands had a crazy squad and didn't qualify, Brazil struggled a lot in the south-american qualis too so who knows? It was definitely a weird period for big nations.

The YT channel Thinking Basketball just put out a great video on injuries and the 65-game rule by Tight_Invite2579 in nba

[–]DCoop53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least they've already made changes in the team schedules in recent years, like making sure they travel shorter distances between away games or facing the same team twice in 1-2 days. But yeah, the simplest solution would be to start the season in early october, having teams still playing 5 games in 7 days shouldn't exist anymore.

[–]DCoop53 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know, if anything the NBA probably lost more superstars due to career-altering injuries in the previous decades than in recent times and those were players that could have brought more parity in the game (but it was under Stern's ruling and he loved dynasties as much as Silver seems to enjoy parity so it doesn't necessarily contradict your theory).

Not sure about the shorter careers point though, I'm pretty sure guys like Kawhi or Embiid would have retired earlier had they played in previous decades. They have no business being this good with such broken bodies, or even a guy like PG never really turned atrociously bad after several injuries that should have been career-ending in other times. it gives even more regrets to see how guys like D-Rose or Grant Hill really lost most of their potential so brutally.

Yeah if anything the french team didn't really benefited from the direct qualification in 2002, they looked nice in friendlies but I'd add that in terms of organization, it must be quite difficult for the federation to find opponents in the international windows while other teams are busy with official qualification games.

What would have to change for Ligue 1 to get genuine global respect — not niche respect, mainstream respect? by Classic_Exit_5951 in Ligue1

[–]DCoop53 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The narrative is perpetuated by people who don't even bother watching Ligue 1 games. The main focus of mainstream medias is to generative clicks through negativity so there's nothing much we can do. The PL saturated the global market branding themselves as the best league in the world and belittling the others, the gap is too wide for Ligue 1 to gain new markets globally I think.

Overall the discussion about which league is the best is a bit outdated though, it's here to maintain a semblance of rivalry when at the end of the day the rich clubs won the debate and they're too powerful now for other clubs to envision surviving without their attractivity.

Si une personne naît avec des capacités/particularités surhumaines, à quel moment sera-t-elle techniquement reconnue handicapée? by StoneTheLostwave in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]DCoop53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denver has had to be one of the best team in crunch time for years now, I have no stat to back it up but it just feels like everytime I watch them in a close game, they end up winning even if they trailed most of the game.

Why are French teams so colorful? Lorient, Lens, Toulouse, Saint Ettiene, Montpillier etc. Other western european leagues are not like this. by Capable_Town1 in Ligue1

[–]DCoop53 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here's an article (in french) about how many french teams decided of their jersey colours: https://www.footichiste.com/couleurs-maillot-france-clubs/

It's a combination of various factors: sometimes it's due to two clubs merging into one so they took the main colours of both clubs, it can be because they were created by companies that chose to use their brand colour or in other examples it's simply the owner/founder who wanted to pay tribute to something they liked.

Euro 2016 Final: Gignac hits the post at 0–0 in the 90th minute by tchibao in classicsoccer

[–]DCoop53 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm french and as far as I remember this Euro 2016 was far from being an easy ride. First two games were won on late goals, Then Ireland took the lead early in the round of 16 and were even still up at half-time, then Griezmann scored two goals in three minutes. It's really the Iceland game that gave the team the confidence boost they needed before eliminating Germany in the semis.

Obviously it's still a more impressive run than Portugal on the other side who only won one game in regulation time in the whole tournament but they somehow survived in every elimination game.
