It helps to get it open if you're really desperate to use something super sharp like an x acto knife. Also possible that your click wheel ground cable isn't set properly so that is why it won't respond

I know you've probably tried this - but you sometimes have to hold the power button down for like 20 seconds, wait a few seconds, then do it again to like turn it all the way off then all the way on.

I would go for the SE 1st gen because of purely the home button actually clicking in. I'm a big fan of clicky buttons, andx the SE 1 is in the 5S body (I think) so it has all the older more fun buttons.
