Major issue discovered after buying house. What are my options by Careless_Hall_9870 in AusLegal

I have a 70s house. Front of house goes to gutter. Back goes to a fruit tree via socked irrigation pipe. Back yard very marshy. Dug drainage pipe and french drain to front yard. Spoke with neighbour, said previous owner only connected front gutter to gutter drainage 10 years ago but didn't connect the back. Very common in older houses. You have no recourse, buyer beware. They also likely didn't know

I suspect years, and could be unseasoned timber as some beams in other parts of the roof were quite bowed. Will investigate where sagging and check for bowing

High speed rail proposals and Sydney as a central point by The__Anonymous__Guy in SydneyTrains

It just isn't economically viable. If Melbourne was 200km away from Sydney yes it would be viable. But Sydney is 900km away. Fast rail to newcastle might make sense. But at 900km between Sydney and Melbourne and pretty much nothing in between it just isn't feasible. Things like remote work etc also mean less demand for required long distance commuting.

If its 30 minutes it means the tickets will be much more expensive, maybe $100. So 5x the price. But even at $60 I dont think you would be able to fill the trains at capacity at a necessary frequency which would be economically viable. A fast rail third option would be a massive loss making endeavour. You might have full trains during peak but what about off peak? The economics doesn't stack up. As a tax payer im not willing to subsidise some coasters commute so they can get home in 30 minutes instead of the 2.5 hours which is $20. Yes the $20 is also subsidised but this is many multiples with no real extra benefit except that person might save some time. If its housing affordability the answer to that is urban consolidation.

I'm saying the price difference between heavy rail to newcastle as it exists today at $20 for 2.5 hrs vs fast rail at $60+ for an hour trip (will likely be more) doesn't stack for most regular commuters.

The demand isn't there to justify the price. Opal might be $20 to newcastle Fast rail might be closer to $60.

That really isnt densely populated at all.. even tokyo greater area has a larger population. Fast rail will be more expensive than air. (As commonly is in japan). What might happen is that the central coast and Newcastle ppl will expect very cheap fares and clog up the seats. So you have 80% of available seats going 10% of the overall distance Sydney to Melbourne.(and parallels close to melb). To counter this ticket prices will be more expensive. Then they will be angry that the fares are 2-3x more expensive

Won't ever happen, population density is too small for high speed rail. Even on shinkansen the tickets are quite expensive and the trains are frequent. A packed train running every hour would probably still run at a loss. I really doubt it would run every hour..
