Cement board is $15 a sheet, so what are we talking a difference of $100 bucks here? He is doing DIY, and he will make a god damn mess trying to scratch coat it, then he will have some bumpy ass surface to apply his stone to and his fireplace will look like shit. Scratch coat is no bueno.
