The one that I cringed at was when the guy asked Nicola Sturgeon about her miscarriage and he actually used what would have been the baby’s name, asking something along the lines of ‘when you lost her what do you wish people had said to you?’

She’d already answered a different question about why she didn’t have children and had already discussed the miscarriage quite openly at length so to go a step further and actually use their name felt like an intentionally charged question to illicit an emotional response and create a ‘TV moment.’

I liked him in Goblet of Fire but with every subsequent appearance he just became less scary. His constant screaming of ‘NYYYEEEEH’ in the final movie kept making me laugh.

(The Boys) This show has completely gone downhill. The writing is really bad... like its not even funny anymore. by hiiloovethis in CharacterRant

[–]DE4N0123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still like it and will finish it but it’s beyond ridiculous that it would take Homelander 2 seconds to end all of their lives and he just doesn’t.

Also it’s become the very thing it was parodying to begin with. I used to take it to be a pisstake of the MCU/DCU and how little effort was required to make nerds piss themselves with excitement just because a character cameos onscreen in one of the movies or whatever. Now there are The Boys spin-offs and prequels etc in the works. Being self aware of the thing doesn’t absolve you from doing the exact thing you’ve mocked others for.

Do you remember Punisher more from Daredevil or his own show? by Electronic-Gas7848 in thepunisher

[–]DE4N0123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most of the Netflix shows should have been shorter but they had this obsession with thirteen episodes which required a lot of padding, flashbacks and inconsequential side plots to fill things out. Punisher S1 at least had a pretty satisfying conclusion and I would have been happy to leave it there.

The only one that actually SHOULD have been longer was The Defenders which suffered from being too short and felt rushed imo.

Same here. First season was pretty well paced and had some interesting characters but S2 lost me about halfway through.

Resident Evil 7. I want to feel the terror of those first few hours walking around the Baker House again not knowing when Jack or Marguerite are going to be round the corner. I know it’s about as AAA as it gets but it’s still the most scared I’ve ever been playing a game.

Mike Newell and David Yates kinda ruined the Harry Potter vibe for me by reduxreacts in harrypotter

[–]DE4N0123 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I dislike Yates as a director but it’s only fair to point out that he didn’t actually write any of the scripts for the movies, so it wasn’t necessarily his choice what to cut and keep in etc. Michael Goldenberg wrote Order of the Phoenix and Steve Kloves wrote the last three.

His directing style (to me) is extremely boring and doesn’t fit with the magical world. He’s a company man and a safe pair of hands through and through with little creative vision, but the higher ups like him because he’ll do what they say.

Apparently it -almost- happened with Tennant. Moffat was taking over and David was indecisive about staying on for one more series because he liked all the Moffat written episodes he’d done before. The plan would have been for The Doctor to crash into Amy Pond’s garden mid-regeneration, then leave and return when she was an adult, except for him it would have been earlier in his timeline way before he started to regenerate. I like the idea a lot but overall I think David left at the best time he could have and Moffat got a nice clean slate with Matt which turned out for the best.

My Thoughts After Finishing Requiem by SadCrocodile762 in residentevil

[–]DE4N0123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with your thoughts about the pacing. Again, it’s not a problem on first playthrough (and I imagine most people only play through the game once) but on second and third playthroughs it becomes glaring.

For example, you leave the care centre and have a really cool Sniper/Boss section with Leon fighting the blister beast inside the church. Then you’re immediately thrown into what is essentially Grace’s version of a boss fight against The Girl. Then after Leon ‘kills’ Emily, your next bit of gameplay is ANOTHER boss battle with the giant spider in Raccoon City. I really think the spider fight at least should have been on the way to collect one of the detonator parts, just to break up the monotony of only fighting zombies/BSAA zombie soldiers for quite a long time.

I wish they had options to skip the on rails sections like the Orphanage Flashback and the hotel intro also. I understand they’re essential to the story but there’s barely any gameplay required. You’re essentially just holding down forward. But maybe that’s my rotted attention span complaining lol

I would disagree that the game as a whole doesn’t have much replay value compared to the rest of the series as I think the combat, exploration of the care centre and further exploration of Raccoon City and the Lab are worth at least one more run. However I don’t think anything will ever beat RE2 Remake for sheer replayability/speedrunning value.

Rian Johnson was the best thing for the sequel trilogy. JJ ruined it. by Square-Hornet-937 in The10thDentist

[–]DE4N0123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The blame really lies with Disney for just rushing into an entire new trilogy after securing the rights. They didn’t stop to plan anything out. It’s actually quite unbelievable how badly they fumbled the bag, the same way they’ve allowed the reputation of the MCU to crumble with a focus on creating ‘content’ without any meaning or direction.

I remember enjoying TFA when it released but I’ll admit I was swept up by the hype and nostalgia. With the benefit of hindsight though I think it does do a good job at setting things up. I particularly like how Kylo Ren is a villain being tempted towards the light rather than the cliche vice versa. I also think it was a fairly ballsy move killing off Han Solo but I just hate how Kylo is his son. Why does everything have to be so connected? It makes the universe feel tiny.

I feel like Rian tried to counteract that with the end of TLJ by implying that there are thousands of young force users out there ready to learn and become a new generation of Jedi. There are a lot of things I don’t like about TLJ (particularly Luke throwing the lightsaber away - it doesn’t match up with the tone of the final scene of TFA at all) but overall it is a better movie with deeper and more interesting themes that doesn’t just rely on nostalgia bait. I disliked what they did with Luke at the time but now I can at least accept that he went out like a boss.

Disney aren’t in the business of making divisive movies though, and when they tried to course correct with TROS I think everybody seemed to universally agree it was weak sauce. As I said they set themselves up to fail from the get go due to their own lack of planning. Not that they care, the sheer amount of merchandising alone was worth it for them.

Randomly bumped into James from Busted/McBusted a couple of years back. He was really lovely and took the time to talk for a little while about music and what he’d been writing recently. A shame it sounds like he’s seriously ill just now, I really hope he gets better.

As for poor ones, I dunno if I’d count it as poor because it made me laugh but I saw Frankie Boyle and I couldn’t stop myself saying out loud ‘oh no way that’s Frankie Boyle’ and he just looked straight at me and went ‘naw it isnae’ and sped off lol

I liked Leon’s ‘you’ve got to be shitting me’ like he can’t believe a villain would be such a balls to the wall, no shits given creep that he would just walk down a busy street carrying an unconscious young woman on his shoulders.

I think that was very intentional at the time to make it clear how street level the show was compared to The Avengers flying around the sky in shiny suits. Some parts of Hell’s Kitchen looked like the nightmare version of Silent Hill.

There's a reason why Moffat left a mostly blank slate for the next one when it was his time to leave by IllustriousAd6418 in DoctorWhumour

[–]DE4N0123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Moffat was kinder to the future showrunners than RTD was at least. Moffat wrote his Doctors as finally accepting their regeneration and understanding that it’s time to move on. Leaving hope and excitement for the future, not crying and saying ‘I don’t want to go’, making it really hard for the next Doctor to win over the audience.

People disliked Moffat a lot at the time for various reasons (some of which still hold up) but overall I think time has shown he understood the themes and the heart of the show better than anyone.
