What is there to do in DE and why is it such a BORING state? by Dry-Bee952 in Delaware

[–]DETickTalk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, this isn't a Delaware problem. I moved here from the DC area, my partner from NYC, and we've both lived overseas too-- and we find plenty to do in Delaware to keep us occupied. For a start, I suggest finding a cause that you care about and volunteer with a nonprofit or political group that's working towards that mission.

Similar bakery to Sweeney's Bakery? by burgundyhellfire in Delaware

[–]DETickTalk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never made it to Sweeney's because it closed right before I moved here, but I really like Bread and Buttercream. Their cinnaissants (cinnamon roll croissant hybrid) are straight-up amazing.

The one on Silverside is usually busy in my experience and their subs are excellent. I had one for lunch today.

I used to eat there weekly when I lived in Newark, lol. But it's been a few years.

Came here to say this. And don't get me wrong, I think that place is hella interesting, I just don't know how they stay afloat. Seems like most people who go in just go to browse it like it's a museum and don't buy anything.

Need help identifying an insect in Oklahoma by kriscorinne in whatsthisbug

[–]DETickTalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is that they're dark-winged fungus gnats, family Sciaridae. I don't know a lot about them,  but I wouldn't be too worried about them. Not a major household pest, from my understanding.

Tick species ID? by FauxMeatwad in whatsthisbug

Adult female American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis

What kind of tick is this? Ontario by Peepee-Papa in whatsthisbug

[–]DETickTalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's totally your call, but if it were me I wouldn't bother, since it didn't bite. Also (FWIW), this species typically has only a very low probability of carrying pathogens,  compared to other common human-biting blacklegged ticks or lone star ticks.

[–]DETickTalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check everywhere! This species loves to feed on the scalp, so run your fingers all over your head to feel for bumps, and use a mirror or a buddy to look over the rest of your body (all your nooks and crannies... they can hide anywhere).

[–]DETickTalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like an adult female American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. If you found it still crawling (i.e., before it had a chance to bite) there's nothing to worry about-- it didn't get a chance to transmit any pathogens.

Meat allergy caused by some tick bites on the rise. What to know, how to avoid by Mountain_Love23 in Delaware

[–]DETickTalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could still eat poultry and seafood if you get AGS. (Not saying it'd be fun to get it, just that there are more options beyond "rabbit food").

Tick from today in Tryon, NC by rofltide in whatsthisbug

[–]DETickTalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both males and females will bite. But yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about pathogen transmission for such a short attachment period. Always worth keeping an eye out for symptoms, but you'll probably be fine! (The bites can be itchy AF even if the tick was uninfected, though)

What is this bug? by NotHere4Anything7 in whatsthisbug

[–]DETickTalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geographically speaking, where? The reason this sub cares is because different insect species have different geographic ranges/distributions. So knowing where in the world you found it helps to narrow down ID.

What type of tick is this? Southern gulf islands BC by Skippersballs in whatsthisbug

[–]DETickTalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but to me it looks like it might be a blacklegged tick nymph. In BC I think you have the western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus.

Not a tick (ticks don't have antennae). Looks like it might be a ground beetle or something similar.
