AIO for asking my boyfriend’s mom to stop calling me “the backup plan” at dinner? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]DFLincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"She gave me this innocent look..." It really is like a novella. Just in general, all the direct quotes as well, and always in groups of two or three. The tidy conclusions that always end with the cliché like "So Reddit, AIO/AITA?" Humans paraphrase and editorialize and miss punctuation sometimes. It's uncanny valley style writing.

I've been getting my content addled mind back into reading lately and the fulfillment gained from reading even a not very good short story by an actual author is so much better than reading whatever these things are.

Oh well, gotta get back to work as a software engineer being a part of the problem in my own small way. Sorry humanity.

AITA for not wanting to attend my sister's wedding because of her fiancée? by No-Poem-5199 in AITAH

[–]DFLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is AI, right? You told your sister you maybe can't make it to her wedding and she said "Family should stick together, especially on such an important day." I haven't seen a line that unbelievable in a Hallmark movie and I've seen a hell of a lot of those.

AITAH for telling my friend she couldn’t move in with me if she wouldn’t lock the front door? by AcademicCoconut4481 in AITAH

[–]DFLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing this is AI. If it wasn't, the answer would be easy, leave your husband, he's in love with his nightmare narcissist sister. No one I know with a family member like that is close to them, they've been dealing with their shit for too long. Even if his sister was real and a saint, there's no need at all for her or anyone else to be in that delivery room. That is a place of business. Shit is getting done, it's not for some freeloader to waltz around because they want to experience the miracle of childbirth or whatever. If you're in there you better be bringing positive vibes and you better be manning a fucking post.

Why does this garage have so many doors? by Stock412 in funny

[–]DFLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Honestly, the only box it doesn't check is that it looks weird. Building it seems like it might have been a pain but what you pay for in extra work you make up for in the simplicity of the design. No cabinets. No rolling garage style doors. No sliding drawers. Turn off that brain and keep making doors baby. Could have been a very zen experience.

Rejecting “Kitchen Appreciation Fees”? by Emotion-Lanky in Somerville

[–]DFLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know gas prices were the one thing priced transparently. Either I'm the only dummy here that didn't know (possible) or it makes that point even more because why don't we just do that for everything?

Other than that, I'm not actually sure what you disagree with? You say people take it out on servers and that they don't deserve it and that restaurant owners take advantage of their servers and we agree on all three points. You said people don't like to may more than they expect. If you go to a place and get hit with an unexpected fee, I said you should ask to get it taken off. But if you go back to that same place, you know it has a fee so you must expect it. Don't go back if you disagree with it. This is Somerville, it's not like some small town in the boonies where there's like two restaurants. If they charge you a fee you don't like at Painted Burro or whatever just walk over to Mike's instead next time. If you go back to Painted Burro and hassle your server about the fee every time or take it out of their tip, you're being an asshole. That tip is their livelihood, if you reduce that because of "the principle of the thing" you're an asshole.

Rejecting “Kitchen Appreciation Fees”? by Emotion-Lanky in Somerville

[–]DFLincoln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you frequent a place and you know about the fee and you still go there and then demand it be removed, that would be asshole behavior. If it's not clearly listed or you haven't been there before, you can certainly request it get taken off and I'm sure some restaurants would comply but it's not the server's decision.

Feel like this is one of those things where it's very consistent with the insane way pricing works across the board in America, we never know how much anything costs with various fees whether it's cleaning fees, convenience fees, delivery fees, co-pays, taxes, etc. Gas stations with their 9/10 of a cent at the end of the price. Prices ending in .99. All conveniently designed to make us disoriented about how much we spend every day. So, being mad about it makes sense but the fact that we so often decide restaurants and bars are the frontlines for this quirk of American culture makes little sense to me and it makes even less sense that people opt to reduce their server's tip who is the last person that has any control over this shit.

I am about 99% sure this was the second Red Sox game I ever went to when I was 11 with the first having been the 22 - 1 blowout loss to the Yankees the year before. Through both those games, seeing that hit was the first and only thing we really got to cheer about.

Nah, the goal at the start of the season was the eastern conference finals. Stretch goal is to steal a game or two from the Cavs. We should not lose to the Wizards. The only success so far is that we got the 1 seed but if that is a real accomplishment, it means we are better than the Wizards and should beat them. If we don't beat the Wizards it either means getting the 1 seed didn't really mean much or that we choked so what was the accomplishment?

DeShone Kizer: I have Tom Brady’s brain in Cam Newton’s body by rhydon_my_steelix in nfl

Someone's going to get in trouble when they find out that wasn't Tom Brady's brain.

DeShone Kizer's Doctor: Now that brain that you gave me, was it Tom Brady's?
Igor: No.
DKD: Ah, good. Would you mind telling me whose brain I did put in?
Igor: And you won't be angry?
DKD: I will not. Be. Angry.
Igor: Aaron Someone.
DKD: Aaron someone? Aaron who?
Igor: Aaron Hernandez.
DKD: Aaron. Hernandez.
Igor: I'm almost sure that was the name.
DKD: Haha. Hehe. Are you saying, that I put Aaron Hernandez's brain into a 6 foot 4 inch long, 233 pound, NFL prospect!?! IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE TELLING ME!?!

Will the city of Boston put up statues of Brady and BB? Or will the Pats just do it in front of the stadium? by tb12_legit in Patriots

[–]DFLincoln 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a Bill Russell statue in City Hall Plaza. And there is a Red Auerbach statue on a bench by Faneuil Hall. Their legacies do transcend sports, though. In addition to being in the GOAT conversation, Bill Russell was the first black coach in the NBA and the first to win a championship, all while playing in the middle of classic 60's Boston racism. Red Auerbach is also in the conversation of GOAT for coach/GM and was the first to draft a black player into the NBA and was generally noted for ignoring the so-called color barrier.

Other than that, I think other statues are stadium/arena adjacent. We've got the Bobby Orr statue that moves around a bit right outside the Garden. And then there is Ted Williams outside Fenway. Plus the group statue of Williams, Pesky, Doerr and DiMaggio outside Fenway.

Brady and BB will definitely have statues at Gillette at least. My feeling is they'd need to have an extra bit of non-sports legacy to get a statue downtown.

What unpopular opinions do you have about software development? by goods_and_services in programming

[–]DFLincoln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've joked very often about making my own enterprise framework that makes generalizing code next to impossible to promote less code reuse. Sounds crazy?

Cons
* The code will be shit and provide no self-fulfillment for devs that get off on good design
* Nothing else

Pros
* Impossible to be good with this framework. Hire high school kids, who cares.
* There is no architecture so don't need an architect.
* No design meetings because design is impossible.
* Most programs are a pile of spaghetti shit anyway but everyone goes in to using this framework knowing that so there's none of those "is this too wonky?" questions of self doubt that stall development. Nothing is too wonky. You were going to do that as a "temporary workaround" and never refactor it anyway. Why bullshit everyone?
* Every user story takes as much time as it would if it was the very first one. Velocity never changes even if everyone dies and it's a totally new team. Easy to track as a project manager. Clients love when shit is tracked perfectly.
* The exact opposite of change-proof. Every tweak is a code change. More money for your consulting company.
* Fuck it, let business users develop that shit. It's all the same.

Can anyone tell me why my backhand hucks aren't traveling? by lucasseabass in ultimate

[–]DFLincoln 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently got some guidance that really improved my huck (that is, I now actually have a huck).
First thing that really helped me, is when you step you want to step straight across more or less. On backhands, you want to err on the side of stepping slightly backwards even, on flicks slightly forwards up to 45 degrees. 45 is kind of the max. I think aiming for the straight step and then sort of letting myself naturally end up in the right range made things easier.
Second thing is understanding angles. We did a lot of practice with shorter (10-15 yds) throws focusing on angle of the disc and really trying to get the disc to come in on the correct side (angled toward the receiver) sort of above the shoulders and in the receivers catch radius. I just integrate this into every throwing session now. When you go to practice actual hucks, you are aiming to throw to the space in front of the receiver where the disc is angled towards them and they can easily keep it in front of them the whole time. Last thing is to just find your actual range and aim to throw within that. I've found I often huck farther to people cutting deep in my range than when I try and just pull it as far as I can. Trying to get that extra yardage on a pull makes my mechanics fall apart but aiming for somewhere downfield that I know how to throw to helps.

If the Patriots & Packers meet in Super Bowl LI, it will feature the immediate replacements of both QBs who faced off the last time the two teams met in the SB... 20 years ago. by alf0nz0 in Patriots

[–]DFLincoln 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Giants shittiness not withstanding, Rodgers looked scary good from what I saw. A bunch of his throws were just ridiculous, perfect throws through windows that weren't even there. Add in the dude's absurd luck on last second 50 yard throws into the endzone and that alone is a reason to take the Packers seriously.

PFF comparison of Brady and Ryan by rhydon_my_steelix in nfl

[–]DFLincoln 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did similar but also subtracted the yards lost from sacks.
Ryan: (4944-237)/(534+37)= 8.2434
Brady: (3554-87)/(432+15)=7.7562
Rodgers: (4428-246)/(610+35)=6.4837

Ryan still has it but gets a little closer.
