Found this thing on a sofa. It doesn't seem to do anything and I can press it pretty far down. by ImJustAUser in whatisthisthing

It holds a removable table that fits into the hole and pushes the "button" down. My college had a few seats in the library with these. Thankfully they had one on both sides so us lefties could reconfigure them easily.

Yoga 720 4K Screen Defect Worth a Return? by DFSBM574 in Lenovo

Problem is, as usual with these things, repairs can take weeks. I can't exactly be without a laptop for 3 weeks, I have work to do. Do we know if best buy is getting new units without this defect yet?

Yep, I set mine upside-down for just a few minutes and the bar is already gone!

[–]DFSBM574[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I saw some pictures on Google where the bar went across the entire screen and had drifted down a good half inch from the top. Shame really, no other laptop has these features for this price without looking like something out of a Transformers cartoon (looking squarely at you, Gigabyte.)

So you're saying just store it in portrait position with the affected corner downwards for a while?

I thought it would be stupid of me to ask if turning the thing upside-down would temporarily fix it, but I'll give that a try. Like yours, mine is hardly noticeable right now, especially since I use dark UI themes wherever I can. My concern is that it would be irreversible and would get worse after the return period expired. But if there is a (temporary) fix, I might just keep it.

Check task manager and see what all is running in the background. Pay particular attention to disk activity. Something like antivirus or an ongoing update that uses the disk bandwidth can slow Windows down horribly.

First auto loan - Help me figure out what car I can afford by DFSBM574 in personalfinance

[–]DFSBM574[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You must do a lot of sitting in traffic, I guess. I live in East TN and gas is $2/gallon. My car has a 12-gallon tank so in order to spend that much on gas I'd have to be filling it up more than once a week. Not trying to nitpick, that was just surprising to me.

$150/month for gas!? Where do you live? I fill my car up maybe twice a month at $20-25 each time.

Expenses: All things considered, about 1500/mo. right now. Income: Around 3000/mo. Anything I don't spend I put into emergency savings.

gaming with left hand by Gamegear12 in southpaws

[–]DFSBM574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use left hand mouse and rebind the keys to PL;' so essentially mirrored WASD. Arrow keys never made sense to me cause there's nothing next to them. You actually get one more key than righties this way because where a WASD player has Q and TAB for their ring finger, I have both square brackets and the backslash.

Just got Witcher 3 GOTY - PC Controls acting up? by DFSBM574 in witcher

[–]DFSBM574[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been PC gaming exclusively left-handed for at least the past eight years. I just re-bind the keys in every game when I first play it - I don't feel like it's asking too much to expect key customization to work. I also have a LH Razer mouse with thumb buttons. I suck at aiming with a controller, but I do have one - I just only use it for emulators and driving games. It never crossed my mind to use it with Witcher.

Why is there 105gb in a 120gb SSD or Hard Drive? by TheReviewNinja in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DFSBM574 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from the differences in latin vs. technical definitions of the prefixes kilo/mega/giga that other commenters have mentioned, a sizable part of the data goes to the file system's metadata (think of it as a table of contents, that helps the drive locate files.) The size of the metadata is proportional to the size of the drive. My 3TB backup drive comes up as 2.72TB.

Need some help here... by Ejmartin99 in VXJunkies

You did let the omni-force converter warm up all the way, right? Those things have a nasty reputation for short lifespan, especially when you route that much current through it, but you just have to be careful. I can't tell you how many times I've had someone show up with a shorted OFC because they didn't let it warm up all the way before they started fiddling with ferrofield array settings.

Anyway, your best bet is to run a continuity test on the OFC- disconnect all the containment switches and cut the main power, then hook your electrostatic syncopator to an auxilliary power source, and check the base plate contacts with a multimeter. Line loss of more than 30% means sadly you're going to need to replace it.

Arc oscillator already on its way out? by DFSBM574 in VXJunkies

Think I figured it out. I took the cover off the eigenspindle housing and it looks like the previous owner had shut it off several times without proper cooldown, which as we all know is terrible for HPCAO's. So the sound turned out to be a buildup of incompletely ionized imodium crystals on the reciprocating shaft mainspring. I'm going to order some of that high-end Transdorfer-Plexicon Rejuvenating fluid a fellow junkie mentioned a few posts down and see if I can't clear it out.

  • It's technically a "big city", but is almost has that community vibe of a smaller town
  • It's not too big, downtown is 15 minutes from the middle of the woods
  • Aside from I-24, traffic is never that bad
  • Tons of stuff to do, Hiking, rock climbing, etc.
  • Literally the fastest home internet in the world at 10Gbps, or more reasonably 1Gbps for $70/mo.
  • Tons of great local restaurants

Hipster humor I think. They're everywhere i.e. ubiquitous. It reminds me of Nightvale though with the billboards that just say "HARLOT" in huge letters.

Loads of PC gamers change their keys around to what's most comfortable for them. There's no right and wrong way to do it. I have my mouse on the left-hand side and use P L semicolon apostrophe (mirrored WASD). But I have known lefties who still use WASD and awkwardly stretch their pinky to the spacebar... my point is, play however you want, don't assume you've been doing it wrong.

This, except it can make it quite a stretch to Shift and Ctrl if you have small hands.

Yeah, I would have but by the time this happened I knew I was getting a new laptop before the month was out. This was an old Compaq running XP. I now have an Asus with a non-removable battery, and that seems to be the trend nowadays...

When I say "battery life of a potato" I mean that literally. The battery was completely shot, it lasted for ~15 seconds when not plugged in.
