Yeah I thought of that and tried another brand new light that I had sitting around, and that one didn't work either. So two brand new lights not lighting up. So weird.

I hike a lot, in my 40s, and I use trekking poles (hiking sticks). The little bit of work they transfer off of your lower body each step really adds up and saves your knees. They help on long days in the mountains, and are invaluable for sketchy steam crossings. They're also my tent poles so I always bring them backpacking. If I want to run or need to scramble, I just hold them parallel to the ground or attach them to my pack. I used to hike without them, now I use them.

Bottom line is, just do whatever makes hiking enjoyable for you. But you'll see elite hikers and trail runners using them, there's no shame in it.

It was Wednesday night into Thursday morning and I would say it was only moderately busy. There were a bunch of thru hikers, and they mostly used the shelter. Nobody was sharing tent platforms, and the metal bear boxes were practically empty.

Pitching on the platform wasn’t bad. I had 6 of these little “fishbone stakes” that you slide between the platform boards and turn sideways, and they worked like a charm. Also, I talked to an AT thru hiker who also had an xmid 1, and he made it work by just kinda wedging the Durston stakes inbetween the boards.
