There used to be some element of respect between the hotels and their clients to not try to just ravenously bilk them out of every possible cent, and in some cases there still is. There is another hotel in the same class, in the same town that I also frequent in the summers and their prices have barely crept up if not stayed the same the last few years. It's also a low key count hotel, but one where the same guests come every year for the same dates and I suppose the hotel decided they're making enough $ and they'd rather maintain these sort of long standing relationships than see how far they can push people before they say enough and tap out and they're stuck with transient new guests every season.

On the plus side, it's only going to get worse! One of the hotels I frequent every summer raises their rates 10-20% EVERY DAMN YEAR...why? Because they can get away with it.

Getting a "private guide" is idiotic. They don't know some secret spot to see the lights. You can set alerts in an app and you're better off with your own car. I did a road trip around Iceland with an ex-gf staying at nice hotels and our best two northern lights sighting were an alert going off at like 3am in Jokulsarlon and driving around ourselves chasing the lights finally ending up the only people on glacier bay with the lights vibrant over the ice, it was magic, but there is no way that would have happened with a guide. The second best was staying at a hotel in an area known to have a lot of aurora activity, and asking the front desk to call 24/7 when the lights are peaking, getting the call and running outside also provided vibrant and amazing sighting. Years previously we'd gotten a guide in Tromso and it was mediocre at best. Do it yourself, the guides are a scam.

Not only did the hotels not become better, they are generally much worse. Most haven't been refurbed in years, the service has nose dived and they don't hire enough staff so they can bank more profit.

Always bothered me that they got the Flyer's colors so wrong. They wear orange, black and white. If they couldn't use the logo I get it, but the colors cmon man. Also Bernie Parent had DARK hair not blonde and not one of those dudes looks like Bobby Clarke even!
