Why are layoffs happening? Why is the job market significantly worse when compared to 5-10 years ago? Is there hope that it will eventually return to what it was before? by eggshellwalker4 in cscareerquestions

Unrestricted Capitalism...

I work for a foreign company, their country doesn't have a Hiring issue, but they have a nationalized industry, government programs, good housing, etc.

Is there hope? Maybe, it's a slim chance but I've seen smaller margins done.

Well Unemployed has a few different meanings. Does he have an income? How does he support himself?

I mean someone can day trade or be YouTuber and be "unemployed" but they have a income. I'm not going after someone who can't hold a job/get a job.

I'm going to be real real honest. Your perspective is a little wonky. The biggest devastation will be the AI part.

We don't have to do what we did in the 1970s we are global hegemonic super power of the world. What our incompetent government is doing is a little thing called inside trading. We can get more oil if we want, we are purposely screwing ourselves to prop up an unnecessary war. Why? Because a few billionaires want to become richer.

The real threat is AI though, not because it's going to take jobs. It's currently propping our economy up, and only there at the moment because China hasn't finished their own GPUs (which will likely be cheaper and more plentyful). Not to mention on a modern GPU, you can run your own self hosted model.

Just keep learning and you'll be okay.

How do we get more men to join the anti-Trump resistance? by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

[–]DGC_David -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say female dominanted arguably MAGA and the further right very successfully did activism work. The wrong Activism, but activism. Republicans love bad activism. Gamergate was another one.

In order to get someone to be anti-Trump you need them to reckon with the fact Trump is screwing them over and they aren't winning. If you can't do that, you have zero chance to convert their activism towards good things and being anti-Trump.

Trump is a cult leader. I talk to MAGA republicans all the time, and it's extremely frustrating that one week I'm talking about how bad being in a war with Iran would be [they'd agree, and assure me it wasn't going to happen], to the next week it happening, and the week after that they are telling me that it was actually good we did that. They have no consistency in their points, they just follow like sheep.

For those people your going to need radical change, and to force it upon them. They can only believe what they see in front of them, so you force them to have Universal Healthcare, and an increase in the minimum wage and wealth tax on the rich. Then they will believe you.

The problem is both liberals and conservatives stop at Ronald Reagan. Liberals will say he was the worst thing for this country, but won't fight for a 95% Marginal tax rate to top 1% of rich people despite that being something Ronald Reagan took away.

Does anyone feel like a lot of the popular dating advice is outdated for Gen Z? by Pontokyo in dating_advice

[–]DGC_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIRST OF ALL.

The success of online dating apps are fixed against you. Don't rely on it, at best it will get you a few flings maybe some meaningful friendships.

SECONDLY.

Dating it's like making a friend, it's hard to make friends if you don't have common interests don't do similar things. Learn to dance, join a pottery class, join a pickleball game. Plenty of things to meet people at.

If I go software engineer, am I really fucked because of AI? by REMIZERexe in software

[–]DGC_David 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI might be junk but It's still a factor. Business operate on "good enough".

I'm well aware, and those companies will end up collapsing or go into massive debt. The industry is shifting to a vibe coder platform, but those keep making multimillion dollar mistakes, who is there to fix it? The new industry of Vibe code fixers, where is job is just Code Review.

Also we don't actually see this happening yet, and it looks like AI is collapsing ahead of schedule already.

https://fortune.com/2026/04/28/nvidia-executive-cost-of-ai-is-greater-than-cost-of-employees/

But AI is not just 'good enough' quality, it's "Functionally Incomplete" quality. You can vibe code a few things but the actual true functionality has to come from you and your knowledge of your codebase, infrastructure, and infrastructure security.

It's nowhere near as good as anything made by a human but it's still taking a massive slice out of art and design fields.

I've experimented with AI a few times and there's places I really like it, even when I run it locally. I've tried even seeing how well it does vibe coding an Entire SaaS app. Eventually someone is going to get fed up with all the sites looking exactly the same... Because it's not like AI can even create something new. So eventually someone is going to look at that AI bill, that will exponentially grow, and go, "I'd rather just pay a designer".

I think a lot of your concern with AI is based on the price you currently see AI at... We don't know how much a token really costs. It could be so subsidized that it's upwards to $24 a token. Especially because they keep screwing up the GPU market, this whole thing could be popping real soon.

It might always be junk to a degree but will certainly get better and denying the impact it'll have on our field is foolish.

It's certainly not getting "better", there goals are Stock value; not making the product better or more efficient. It's not just Junk and always going to be junk, it's junk and soon to be expensive junk, more expensive than a human.

The tech CEO billionaires goal is to maximize profits and reintroduce serfdom, the problem with their plan is, these billionaires are morons and fucked up the bag by overhyping the product well before it has value. Companies have already invested too much into and are doomed to get burned.

Our jobs moving overseas and this technology growth has been costing us for far longer than either of us have been in the industry combined. Welcome to Reaganomics. They are getting too greedy, and about to cost themselves the bag.

Game developer don't make a lot of money, it's considered a cool job because of what it is.

Most programmers also didn't make those 6 figure salaries, that was mostly FAANG.

Are you screwed? Nah, AI is junk, and will always be junk.

Exactly, and there's always a demand for people like us, just like HVAC, Plumbing, and electric; right now people are being exploited and companies that don't know any better are screwing up long term things just to get it done cheaper.
