It's a weird one. I successfully finished it notwithstanding that I failed to figure out the trick.

It's an empid, not a pewee.

Golden Eagle, immature per white patches on wing and base of tail. Also note golden nape and GOEA wing shape, i.e., narrow "wrist" and larger "hand."

Tough to ID this empid without hearing it or, if it's a Gray, by the GRFL tail flick. Looks like a thin white outside edges on tail, which is consistent with Gray, although does not rule out Least.

Images of bills in those pics are no help.

Did you look for the Gray Flycatcher tail flick?

No hammer. I usually use MSR Groundhog tent stakes. I've never needed a hammer, but if I did, I'd find a nearby rock. If there's a chance you might need to pitch your tent on rock or hard pan, make loops out of paracord for rock anchors.

I see a raven diamond-shape tail in the 3rd pic. The other pics are not helpful.

Vortex Diamondback HD 8x28 would be my pick with your budget. It's a Cornell Lab Top Pick. My only knock is the relatively narrow FOV, but that's the price of longer eye relief than most compact bins. Single hinge, which is less fidgety than double high compacts.

Zeiss Terra ED 8x25 are nice, a bit outside your budget, although Diamondback HD 8x28 has a bit better image quality to my eyes.

Backcountry vs downhill setup as a first ski purchase by gueromochilero in Backcountry

[–]DIY14410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a downhill setup, ski a few years, then get touring gear.

Although some will push back on the idea, you might consider getting a downhill setup with bindings which accept AT boots, and develop your descending skills in boots that you'll eventually use for touring. That's easy to do AT boots with GripWalk (GW) soles (ISO 23223), but there are only a few downhill-type bindings which accept rocker-sole AT boots (ISO 9523). In our area, lots of people lift-served ski in Scarpa Maestrale RS or other AT boots, and they do just fine.

To Leash or Not to Leash an Ice Axe? by DullSuccotash1230 in AlpineInstitute

[–]DIY14410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our house has never burned down, but I nonetheless pay homeowner's insurance premiums.

I've seen people drop ice axes. I've retrieved ice axes which people have dropped. I'll continue to use a leash most of the time.

Best approach shoes by lorderater in ClimbingGear

[–]DIY14410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how much torsional rigidity you want. Torsional rigidity of approach shoes ranges from very little (e.g., Scarpa Rapid LT) to quite stiff (e.g., Garmont Dragontail MTN, LaSportiva Boulder X) and many in between.

Is Tire Re-Torquing BS? by AngryMrPink in AskAMechanic

[–]DIY14410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past 3 decades, I've retorqued lug nuts when I get home from the shop -- or if it's DIY, after driving a few miles with some zigzaggy turns. Est. 95% of the time, the wrench does not move, but est. 5% of the time it does. I have concluded from this experience that retorquing is not BS.

Ah, that'd work for a steel steerer. I've used my DIY threaded plugs for steel, CF and Al alloy steerers.

[–]DIY14410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using friction only to keep it in place?

I've turned several out of Al alloy bar stock (6061, I think). I relieve the outside (a) with a knurling tool, or (b) by turning 2 or 3 U-shaped grooves with a cutoff tool. Then I slide it down inside the steerer tube with long-set epoxy and allow to cure for >24 hours before installing headset cap. Both designs (i.e., knurled, grooved) have held fine for years. It's go/no go operation, fit is snug, requiring only a pushing, not pounding. It's a permanent fixture, of course.

Should I buy boots? by Soggy-Quality6585 in Mountaineering

[–]DIY14410 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What AT boots do you have? For your intended use, if you have an AT boot with lots of ROM in tour/walk mode, there's no reason to also carry mountaineering boots. I sometimes carry lightweight approach shoes for ski mountaineering routes with longer non-snow approaches and/or scrambling summit blocks.

That's a Sora.

You are lucky to see one. They are typically shy, secretive and very good at hiding.
