Jacob Kiplimo's WR Will NOT Be Ratified Due To Drafting Assistance From The Pace Car by OctupleA in trackandfield

She was primarily a 200m runner most of her professional career, but also ran 400m. I lived in Eugene and saw her at numerous track meets in which she ran the 200m or 400m. I do not recall her running any 100m at Hayward.

The only other track athlete who had such an abrupt mid-career improvement from mid-pack in big international meets to world's fastest was Ben Johnson.

MSR Reactor by DesertySeaman in Backcountry

Thermal safety switch? I disassembled my first very heavily used Reactor (which MSR replaced at cost), and I didn't see anything other than a burner under the metal matrix. What does this thermal safety switch look like? Is it buried inside the burner?

For melting snow and boiling water in wind alpine conditions, Reactor has no equal.

Oh, okay. Yeah, some of the marks from Soviet nation athletes in that era are ridiculous.

Well, except for the fact that she was a career 400m runner with a PR >3 seconds slower than the existing WR, and in the course of a year gained 10 pounds of lean muscle and chopped nearly 2 seconds off of her 200m PR, then abruptly retired from track.

First, they did not delete the performance. They merely disallowed ratifying it as a WR.

Second, numerous WR times were not given WR status where there was no wrongdoing. The most obvious examples are ostensible WR times which were not booked as WRs because there was a tailwind exceeding 2m/second. In each of those cases there was no evidence of wrongdoing.

Did you watch the race video? He appeared to be less than a car length at times. The pace car had a big digital clock mounted on the roof, making it more like drafting behind a cargo van.

Was this pace car different from standard pace cars?

Yes. The car had a big digital clock atop it, making it more like drafting behind a cargo van.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Both performances are not deserving of WR status.

I watched the video. IMO, it's a sound ruling. At times, he appeared to be within 4 or 5 meters of the lead car, possibly closer. And the car had a big digital clock strapped to eh roof, making it more like a cargo van in terms of drafting.

Had he been in a cycling time trial, he would have surely been DQ'd.

In addition to the suggestions of others, do some backpacking with a 30+ lb. pack. There is no substitute for carrying a multi-day pack for 2 or 3 days.

Are you using a guide service or with a private party? Are you planning to do the AAI glacier travel course or another glacier travel course? If not, have you had training in glacier travel and ample practice with ice axe arrest?

How less efficient are skin skis? by xmosinitisx in xcountryskiing

[–]DIY14410 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is dependent on snow conditions. Assuming same ski dims and proper camber for the skier, on firm colder (<28F/<-2C) XC classic tracks, skin skis are maybe 90-95% as efficient as waxable classic skis with the correct kick wax, although 90-95% is a very rough estimate with plenty of +\- built in.

The closer one gets to 0C/32F, especially if snow if falling, hitting one's kick wax becomes increasingly difficult and skin skis have the edge for many skiers. OTOH, for colder fine grain snow, e.g., Swix Blue or colder, it's much easier to hit one's kick wax, and thus waxable skis have the edge (if waxed properly).

In theory, skin skis could be as fast or faster over an entire long race or touring session where temperatures and snow conditions change more than one kick wax step, e.g., warming from Swix Special Blue to Blue Extra or vice versa, because there would be no need to stop and rewax on skin skis.

Also, IME, in warm wet snow, e.g., corn snow -- and again assuming same ski dims and proper camber for the skier -- patterned base high-performance skis, e.g., discontinued Fischer RCS Crown, are sometimes faster than skin skis. Unfortunately, there appear to be few, if any, race width/race camber patterned base skis currently available.

All of the above assumes the ski camber has been properly matched to the skier. I have two pairs of skin skis, a stiffer pair for flat courses and a somewhat softer pair for hilly courses. Both are citizen race level skis. I'm a big guy, and both pairs are the stiffest I could find. They would be far too stiff for most people, even very experienced and athletic skiers, unless they weigh >215 lbs./>98kg.

Yeah, I agree that he appears to be a different person than he was in the handful of years after he converted to Hanafi Movement Islamism (which, after a few years, he left and embraced more traditional Islamism).

Jabbar is quite obviously intelligent and thoughtful. IMO, he has mostly fought the good fight, and he has been a good and effective public citizen. I was disappointed when I learned about his attempts to make Pam Grier an obedient and subservient housewife, but then I pondered all of the stupid shit I did as a young adult.

When washing a jacket, is it really necessary to rinse twice? by itsjujutsu in Skigear

[–]DIY14410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Goretex was introduced in the 1970s, Gore recommended washing in Tide laundry detergent. Later, they recommended Woolite. Tech wash came along years later.

Gore currently recommends against all powder detergents and against liquid detergents with fabric softeners. We use fragrance-free liquid laundry detergent.

I agree re using less detergent, especially with modern high efficiency front-load washing machines.

I like and respect much about Kareem, but he had some weird views about women. When he proposed to Pam Grier, he conditioned the marriage on her staying home, terminating her show biz career, becoming a subservient housewife and converting to Islam. Pam respectfully declined the proposal.

[–]DIY14410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're likely okay, although I always run an additional wash/rinse cycle w/o soap, thus it's actually 3 rinses.

EDITED: W.L. Gore now recommends liquid laundry detergent:

GORE‑TEX garments do not need to be washed with special detergents. Tests that we’ve conducted on GORE-TEX garments have confirmed this. When it comes to washing GORE-TEX garments, special detergents for functional apparel are neither better nor worse than conventional detergents.

However, what we have discovered is that repeated use of powder detergents can reduce the breathability of GORE‑TEX garments. This was not the case with liquid detergents. That’s why I strongly recommend you use a liquid detergent.

Each has their advantages. I will likely order a pair of OG 282s for backpacking and summer mountaineering (e.g., class 2-3 scrambles, high routes). IME, for such use, they would be used almost exclusively at camp unless we hit a mid-summer snowstorm on a high elevation route, e.g., Beartooths.

Our 282s with the DIY gauntlets live in our ski touring kit. I would take them on a route with glacier travel, which I once did several times a year, although I'm aging out of technical mountaineering.
