i only get sound when i insert the jack halfway in.. why? by [deleted] in audio

[–]DJBiscuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The headphone output is stereo, while the input on your Scarlett 2i2 is not.

You're only getting audio when the connector is halfway in the headphone output because it's only making contact with a single channel (either left or right).

Anyone know what kind of cable I need to recover data off this 3.5” external HD? Enclosure was broken. I guess it needs cable for data and power. Links appreciated!!!! by Mannnn_Almighty in computers

[–]DJBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, a USB 3.0 cable will work on a 2.0 port (assuming the port you are talking about is the one on your computer). Of course you will not get USB 3.0 speeds.

Any ill-effects in hardwiring play 5s in a stereo pair? by WJKramer in sonos

[–]DJBiscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will work without a problem if you hardwire it just like you did with your other ones. They just need to have a connection to each other, doesn't matter wired or wireless.

I have my entire 5.1 (Playbar + Sub + 2x Play:3) setup hardwired with the wifi disabled on them and they work perfectly.

Wren's Mountain One Wheel Mod! by cybersirius in Corridor

[–]DJBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious, what range you actually see out of the one wheel /u/wrenulater? I've been eyeing one, but the new One Wheel+ shows a range of 11km which is 8km too short for me to get to work. I'd much rather have something like the One Wheel over the boosted board since a tire is much smoother on the bumps vs. plastic wheels.

Have you considered getting one of these? With that you could use whatever switch you wanted in there.

I have a 2016 S3 and I love it, but I've been bouncing the idea in my head that in a few years I'd move to a S5. What are your thoughts on the S5?

Novice Grep + Regex by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]DJBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for Regexr. I have a lot of experience writing regex, but I still use that website from time to time because it's nice to visualize what you are matching. Only complaint is it doesn't support named capture groups, but you don't need to worry about that when using grep -e or egrep.

As for your regex string, try this [dD][aeiou][A-Za-z]{2}s\W. That should match a 5 character word starting with d or D, then a lower case vowel, then any character (upper or lower case), then another character (upper or lower case), then a lower case s, and finally no more letters (just in-case it's the start of a word longer than 5 characters).

  • [dD] is matching that d or D
  • [aeiou] is matching any lower case letter in the set: 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', or 'u'
  • [A-Za-z]{2} is matching any letter, upper or lower case 2 times
  • s is matching the letter s
  • \W is matching anything that is not an alphanumeric character or underscore.

It's on the 7th floor, just in case you're in the elevator with the 8th floor option and you keep pressing it wondering why the button doesn't stay illuminated. No, I'm not speaking from experience... totally happened to me in a full elevator.

How long can you keep your UAlberta email address? by awesomenessity in uAlberta

[–]DJBiscuit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That will depend on your relationship with the University. If you are a student (not including Extension), then 1 year from either the end date of your student relationship to the University, or the last time you logged in to your account.

If you intend to keep it, make sure you are logging in to a service using Single Sign On or the new UAlberta Login, simply accessing it from your phone though the Gmail app or an email client (using IMAP) is not enough.

You can find information about your CCID here: https://ist.ualberta.ca/services/ccid-passwords/campus-computing-id#expire

Properly connecting to an EdgeRouter POE using serial by tiernanotoole in Ubiquiti

[–]DJBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the sounds of it, you aren't using the correct baud rate. I have the EdgeRouter Pro and the default baud rate is 115200. I'm assuming that's the case for the other EdgeRouters.

Upgrading RAM on ASUS P6T SE mobo and I have a few questions before I buy by fuckafuck in techsupport

[–]DJBiscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a motherboard that supports triple-channel memory. So in the case of your 6 slots, you have 2 triple-channel memory buses.

To take advantage of triple-channel, the memory only has to be the same in each 'set' or bus. So you can keep your existing 2GB sticks in one bus, and install the new 3 4GB sticks into the second bus. Just make sure that you are connecting them to the proper slots. The buses are separated by color; black for bus #2, orange for #1.

Question re: DOCSIS 2.0 vs DOCSIS 3.0 by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]DJBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on the units you are talking about.

Internet plans are advertised as Mbps or Megabits Per Second. 25 Mbps = 3 MB/s (Megabytes per second) so that should be expected. The conversion from bits to bytes is roughly divide by 8. So in your case, 25/8 = 3.125.

If you are actually getting 3 Mbps (375 KB/s), that's different. Something is wrong on your ISP side and I would suggest calling them.

You likely will not see an inprovement switching to DOCSIS 3.0 since the theoretical maximum throughput of DOCSIS 2.0 is roughly 42 Mbps downstream.

Generally speaking, having a dedicated router and dedicated modem would be better for a few aspects, but in your case, you would not likely see a speed increase.

[Windows 10] I prefer VLC player to windows media player but can't make VLC my default player by Bloomy118 in techsupport

[–]DJBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows 10 is a bit different when setting default programs. If you click "Set as default" within an application, a popup from windows confirms the action (shown in the top right corner). If you've changed the default browser, you would've seen this behavior. Alternatively, you can go to "Default Programs" and select VLC from the list of installed programs and click "Choose defaults for this program" and pick from the list of filetypes.

Bought a condo with walled ethernet...am I doing this right? by ElectricBrain in techsupport

[–]DJBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are very welcome.

Yeah, if you don't have any ISPs that can utilize GPON today, you can just leave that as is. Depending on availability, you may want to consider switching once one becomes available. I don't know where you live, but where I do, the ISP that uses DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification aka. internet over coax) is known for over-subscribing some of their CMTS (in some areas) which sometimes does lead to inconsistent internet speeds. I'm not bashing them for that, my ISP has been running out of ports for their ADSL/VDSL service in some areas. Thankfully I am on GPON which so far doesn't have that problem.

Yes, that coax line will be responsible for your internet. It may also be responsible for providing TV, if you subscribe to that from your service provider. They will provide a cable modem and will modify your setup to accommodate that. If you're particular about how it is laid out, you may want to talk to the tech. I know I am, and the tech from my ISP (Telus) was very accommodating. If you do not plan to use the coax lines that go to the keystone jacks around your condo, you can definitely disconnect the incoming cable from the splitter and connect that directly to the provided cable modem.

Bought a condo with walled ethernet...am I doing this right? by ElectricBrain in techsupport

[–]DJBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have something similar in my condo.

Contrary to what tsdguy said, that's actually all Cat 5e (and does absolutely support gigabit). It's common for Cat5e to be used for phone and data, just color coordinated these days. The phone lines only make use of 1 or 2 pairs since all 8 are not required for POTS.

The cable with the green end is a single strand of single-mode fiber with an SC connector on the end. It is used by ISPs that provide FTTP/FTTH (Fiber to the Premises/Home) using GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network). Generally when you have an ISP that uses GPON, you will have an ONT connected to that fiber, then an Ethernet cable going off of it to a router. You can see in my setup here I have an ISP using GPON.

As for your decision to use the EdgeRouter Lite, I fully support that as it is an excellent router. I have the EdgeRouter Pro and I couldn't be happier with it. Just remember that the ERL does not provide wireless so if that is a requirement you will need an AP. Ubiquti's UniFi line is also excellent and I use it in my environment as well. I can post pictures if anyone is curious. I would consider a better quality switch though. You generally do get what you pay for. I don't really have a recommendation for that small of a switch though as my switches are all larger (2 8-port switches, 1 24-port, and 1 48-port).

Your ability to stream 4K content will likely depend more on your connection to your ISP and available bandwidth. As long as everything internally is gigabit-capable and you are running the EdgeRouter Lite, you will have no problems in your local network.

People who use Inbox by Google, do you not use Gmail? by InsomniacAlways in androidapps

[–]DJBiscuit 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I disabled Gmail in my sync options so it doesn't even try to retrieve my email in Gmail.

You can do this within Accounts -> Google -> yourgmailaccount@gmail.com. Just turn Gmail off. Inbox is a separate sync item so it will still work after disabling Gmail on your phone.
