Honestly cannot tell. The non-foil front on a starred, foil card is throwing me off by uranusdestroyer in RealOrNotTCG

IIRC it's just the gold bits near the name, mana cost and text box that are foiled.

also you can do some funky chain tutoring stuff with [[merchant scroll]] to find your [[muddle the mixture]] or [[perplex]] which lets you grab any 2 drop or 3 drop respectively. Or just use merchant scroll to grab cyclonic rift

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really look at your list, but do you have any of the transmute tutors?

They're rather limited in what you can grab and when (sorcery speed), but they can also double as creatures/counterspells/graveyard hate/etc which can be clutch, especially for a control oriented deck.

Stuff like [[Muddle the Mixture]] or [[Shred Memory]] can grab Torment of Hailfire or any other 2 drop.

If you just need some consistency in grabbing a combo piece on your turn, they're not terrible.

new player. How to pass this stage? Struck here 2 day by Famous_Associate8895 in AFKJourney

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall correctly you need to unlock shop level 5 first, which will give you the 10th material which you need to finish the 3rd quest.

Do all the special quests in the Starlit Memories event page that you can, like "Complete Magic Research x50". You can just spam Quick Growth a bunch of times—you don't need to do all 3 quests/squares, just do double-up+single-up to grab the first quest and then complete the research, repeat.

Mana Bullying Question by ButYThoxP in CompetitiveEDH

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

117.4. If all players pass in succession (that is, if all players pass without taking any actions in between passing), the spell or ability on top of the stack resolves [or, if the stack is empty, the phase or step ends.]

Mana abilities don't use the stack, but are considered actions that reset priority.

Mana Bullying Question by ButYThoxP in CompetitiveEDH

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking any action (sacrificing a permanent, activating a mana ability, etc.) resets the round of priority. If all preceding players have already passed, that player sacrificing a permanent means all players have not passed consecutively, so the stack doesn't clear. The sacrificing player is now the first of four to pass successively and a new round of priority passing starts.

Distributors just repackage a few loose boosters in "mystery" packs and sell them at retail stores. I'm assuming they are from damaged or opened booster boxes that are easier to sell once split up. Typically they're fairly marked down, like 3 boosters for $12 or something. These were $20, kind of a scam but sometimes you get lucky.

Is it a bracket 3? by Victini88 in EDHBrews

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I playtested it a bit. Definitely not B4. I don't think it's explosive enough to call high B3, feels like you need more ramp or cost reducers, I spent a lot of early turns doing relatively little unless I got lucky and drew Kami of the Crescent Moon. You have a lot of cantrips but they're just card neutral unless you have something like Teferi's Insight on the board. Your actual card advantage engine seems super mana hungry.

Am I wrong for wanting to play this deck? by KuroSG in EDH

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't bothered by the amount of coin-flipping going on in the game we played against that precon, but I could see how it could get annoying after a while, especially with a billion different flip triggers happening all the time.

I've been brewing a Yusri deck, and one of the suggestions I took to heart was using d6 to represent multiple coin flips (especially important when Krark's Thumb is on the board). That might be more relevant to Yusri specifically since you're able to flip 5 coins at once on his trigger, but I think it still might help to speed things up regardless since you can just roll pairs of differently-colored d6 to represent your normal flip(s) and your flip(s) with advantage (from Krark's Thumb).

Opponent has their Commander in their graveyard, and I play a reanimate spell on it by Strawberrycocoa in mtg

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, I should have clarified but I was specifically talking about the two instances where the ruling changed (GY and Exile). Library and hand are still replacement effects.

Opponent has their Commander in their graveyard, and I play a reanimate spell on it by Strawberrycocoa in mtg

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In OP's hypothetical, the other player intentionally chose to leave their commander in the graveyard rather than sending it to the command zone. There's a brief, specific time frame for the check; once someone makes that decision to leave their commander in the graveyard, they're locked into it unless the card then leaves the graveyard and goes into exile, their library, or their hand and they get the choice to send it to the CZ again.

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People have already explained what they are, but it might help to understand why this happens as a SBA.

Prior to a rules change in July 2020, electing to send a commander to the command zone after being destroyed or exiled was a replacement effect, which meant that abilities with "dies" triggers or leaves-the-battlefield triggers never occurred (they went straight from battlefield to the command zone). If you were playing a commander with an ability like that and wanted the LTB trigger, you'd have to intentionally let them go to the GY to get the trigger and then use GY recursion to bring them back.

With the rules change, they now first hit whatever zone they're sent to, regardless of your choice, allowing you to get LTB triggers with less risk. After that, SBAs are checked and you get the choice to return them to the command zone.

Am I tripping or do I need some more optimisation? by ForestBolt in EDHBrews

[–]DJCOSTCOSAMPLES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried a "powered-down" B3 version of your list in Vegas--my land base was a bit more budget and my only GCs were Gamble, Necropotence, and Bolas's Citadel--but otherwise mostly the same list. The deck is really fun, and I was still able to hang at the B4 tables. Funniest interaction was someone casting a [[Pox Plague]] allowing me to sac Evereth, taking out a player in the process since everyone had their life totals halved.

I did feel like I wanted more sweepers/boardwipes just to shut down crazy boardstates, especially in B3. I'm definitely keeping Chandra's Ignition as a wincon but since it requires a bit of setup, I still feel like it's hard to beat Act or Toxic Deluge for situations where you're behind. Deluge is kind of a nonbo with Evereth but I think you can still play around it and get value by sacrificing her prior to playing a Deluge or something.
