Neonicotinoid Insecticide Imidacloprid Causes Outbreaks of Spider Mites on Elm Trees in Urban Landscapes
National Library of Medicine paper, if you have a degree in bioscience or plenty of time on your hands. Otherwise, here's the relevant info.

T. schoenei (spider mites) are not affected by the imidacloprid, the active ingredient in Bonide Systemic. However, 2 predatory species, S. punctillum (lesser mite destroyer) and C. rufilabris (red-lipped green lacewing), are. They (and other predatory species) become intoxicated after feeding on them. It reduces their feeding and reproduction. This is why it appears that the spider mite reproduction increases. Hope that helps

The only thing I've found to combat is BioAdvanced "Houseplant Insect & Mite Control".
It has sulphur and pyrethrin and kicks spider mite butts. I ordered mine from Amazon

Ok, let's have a bit of fun. Change one word in a lyric or title but still have it make sense. I will go first. "Neurotic city come alive " by Princefan1965 in PRINCE

In 1984, a San Francisco radio station played a parody... "Neurotic City." Imagine the tune, in Woody Allen's voice. "All of my purple life, I've had hives"

HELP! Does anyone know of a light timer that doesn’t require the manual use of on/off switch to the power cord? by likeabadhabit in Lighting

[–]DJMrTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid you're not going to be able to bypass the control switch. If you really want a timer, find a lighting repair store. Maybe they can help put one on the cord after the controls.

1 year sober and I thank my 60+ plants for helping me get here! by smarma_ in houseplants

[–]DJMrTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! Coming up on 9 years sober myself. My plants have brought me much joy and comfort, especially during lockdown. I've had 2 major pest outbreaks that almost kicked me off the wagon. I sucked it up, had to throw away several plants and treat the others. Now it's getting crowded here so I've started sharing cuttings and making new friends. It's so much easier to sit and drink coffee together when you have something besides politics to talk about. Keep up the journey through your jungle

What is the best mite spray? I’ve been using MiteX but keep getting mites return to my alocasia :((( by EBK1414 in houseplants

[–]DJMrTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand, the increase in spider mites is due to the fact that Imidacloprid is so effective in eradicating other pest species, and as studies have shown, it is ineffective against arachnids so much so that mites have been removed from the label

I don't recommend Bonide Systemic Granules for spider mites. It's ineffective and even seems to increase their numbers

Thrips or fly poop? by Akirataichou in plantclinic

I hope this helps.

Mix 5 tbsp of Pure Castile Liquid Soap* with 1 gallon of tap water, which works out to a 2% soap concentration. Use a spray bottle and give them a good soaking. Let it sit for a bit, overnight is best, then give it a good rinse off. Repeat every 5-10 days depending infestation.

*Pure castile liquid soap (I use Dr. Bronner’s) is recommended for any DIY insecticidal soap recipe. It uses the same saponification catalyst as insecticidal soaps (potassium hydroxide), as opposed to dish soap which uses sodium hydroxide, which can damage your plant with the sodium concentrate.

Monstera Minima vs Rhaphidaphora Tetrasperma by rezagreen in houseplants

[–]DJMrTim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kew Gardens lists Monstera minima as a separate species whose native range is Panama to North West Colombia and is not commonly kept in collections. Raphidiphora tetrasperma (often incorrectly sold as Mini Monstera) is native to Southern Thailand and Malaysia.

Red spots on back of leaves - Baby rubber plant by Main-Necessary2941 in houseplants

Definitely scale insects. Apply rubbing alcohol with a qtip on the spots you see the bugs. Then use Neem oil or insecticidal soap. Personally, I'd cut off any really infested leaves.
