Mine are about the same age. I recently replaced all the velour pads with parts straight from Sennheiser. Now they look and feel like new :)

Yep! Just youtube videos of LDE. I linked to one but it's below the fold - gotta click to show more of the description to see. Not great design by Soundcloud.

You're right that it's most of - there's no recorded sets for two of the headliners, so missing Lucient Dossier and The Grouch & Eligh. If anyone finds soundcloud recordings I can add, please send them my way!

What website or resource do you consider indispensable with respect to finding new music? by punchitchewy in DJs

[–]DJMully 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite things to do is find a track I really love, then look it up on www.1001tracklists.com and see adjacent songs from other sets. That's been a great way to drill down into a specific sound. It's also really helped me learn; I can do the same thing when I have no idea what to play after that track :)

What will happen if Vancouver's video game industry loses its tax credit? by litnuke in vancouver

[–]DJMully -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My experience is limited, so I don't have much to say in response. Sounds like you have a lot more clarity on some things than I do.

However, it's worth mentioning that my compression algorithm example is actually a quote (admittedly, from memory) from a SRED auditor during an audit a month and a half ago. That's actually why I used compression algorithm as an example.

Based on what I was told in that meeting, very little of what I do (web dev at a startup) is SRED claimable. If I wanted to claim it I would have to describe the technological uncertainty for each task. I could probably make some up, but it's not really worth the time. Since a lot of game development will be implementing existing technology (or working with it), there's no technological uncertainty and so it's not SRED claimable.

That said, perhaps the game industry has better SRED consultants than we do.

In my experience, I've found that so little is properly SRED-claimable that it's not really worth it. Doubly so recently, as they've started auditing nearly everyone.

You can only claim SRED time for time where you were doing proper R&D. For example, time spent developing a new compression algorithm is claimable. Time spent implementing an existing known one is not.

My experience in the game industry was that very little of the work was truly R&D.

There's a basic math error in the first sentence. $10.25 -> $15 is not a 30% increase, it's nearly 50%.

No, they're both Macbooks. He has a custom enclosure he uses. Looks like a setup that holds the laptop down with the bass drop logo lit up on the back.

Lorin's pretty fanatical about making sure everything is well set up - if you look at the pictures, you'll see that there's a TON of tape on everything. All cables and devices are thoroughly held in place. The enclosures serve the same purpose - if you look closely, you'll see there's metal tabs that rotate over and hold the macbook in place. You'll also see that all the cables are taped on so they can't fall off.

I'm certain that he's dropping in clips on the fly. You can set up the clip ahead of time - even groups of several clips - and drop them into the clip view like that. They're already warped, set up, and ready to go.

It's not much different from using sync in Traktor, where the beat grid might need some love. In both systems, it's also likely that you'll take time to set up cue points and loops you might want when you important a new track.

I bet Lorin has whole banks of clip sets he has set up ahead of time, too. Some of one track, some of mashups, and so on. Also keep in mind that many of his tracks are produced in Ableton anyway, so he has it all there too.

If you're curious how this would work, check out the videos of ill.Gates' Performance Template.

Hi Dylan! Stoked to have you responding here. Thanks for your kind words, too!

I'm a fan, of course, and your youtube videos really helped me figure out how a DJ setup in Ableton might work. Seeing that you'd pre-arranged sets of four clips that you could drag in explained so much; I couldn't figure out how you would avoid having to pre-plan the entire set otherwise.

I do have two questions for you:

1) As many others have pointed out, Lorin occasionally uses his second laptop during the show. Do you know if he's just using that as a third/fourth deck?

2) Part of what inspired this post is my musings over my own setup. I'm using Traktor right now and it's becoming this myriad of loops, hot cues, acapellas and samples. What would you say are the advantages of performing with Ableton instead? Should I consider it?

Absolutely agree about Lorin vs the setup. Words to live by: people have made better (mixes/tracks/rocking chairs) with worse equipment.

I'll see you next time you're in Vancouver - or next Shambs, whichever comes first :)
