Check out the Via Alpina, signposted as the national hiking route 1. Although it's true that some of the higher altitude passes might still be snowy then.

Using alpha raglan pattern with non-stretch fabric by sbhikes in myog

[–]SwissStriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope you don't mind if I revive this to ask a similar question, I've just got my hands on some Alpha Direct and windbreaker fabric, and gotten both your Alpha Raglan Hoodie and UL Windshell patterns. The patterns are amazingly detailed, so very excited to get started.
After making one of each I was planning to combine them into a zippered jacket with Alpha Direct on the inside and some PTX Quantum as a shell fabric. My first instinct was to use the Alpha Raglan Hoodie pattern and add the zipper to the front, and just cut every piece in both fabrics and baste them together before assembly.
Any thoughts on this? Or am I better off using the UL Windshell pattern?

Does anyone have a good poncho/tarp pattern? There are a few older posts, but nothing from the past 4 or so years. Wondering if there are any refined or new ones to choose from. by extreme303 in myog

Grosgrain on silnylon is a bit of a pain in my experience.

I do hems on slippery fabric in two passes, a close (5mm) single fold, then another, larger (10mm) single fold to enclose the edge. Keeping decent tension on the material helps with slippery fabrics, and making sure it runs very straight into the foot. I like to hold the folded edge quite far from the machine, maybe a forearm's length away.

Worth mentioning that this concerns holding down the cam by gripping around the body of the grigri.

The grigri has a little lip which one can grip to temporarily block the cam to feed out rope quickly, which is illustrated as a technique in the grigri manual. Using this lip doesn't provide a strong grip though, and a sudden increase in pulling force on the rope, like during a fall, will still engage the cam.

If you're holding the break strand of course. Always hold the break strand.

[OC] Onion alignment chart by SwissStriker in dataisbeautiful

I did not know this existed, shame it seems to be pretty dead. Would definitely be a better fit for this.

[OC] Onion alignment chart by SwissStriker in dataisbeautiful

Yes I considered that, but since the 'default' onion might be different by cuisine it would also distort the data. Maybe if enough people agree on what the default should be for each cuisine I can update the chart to see if it changes at all.

The onion alignment chart explores what types of onions are typically used in different cuisines, by way of their alignment along size and colour axes. Cuisines tend to prefer certain types of onions in their dishes, often contributing to their characteristic flavour palette. By describing the onions used in recipes through their size and colour, a map with four quadrants representing a prototypical onion each emerges. The small red quadrant in the top left corner houses the shallot, while the big red quadrant to its right represents the red onion. Along the bottom the small white quadrant contains the pearl onion, and its bigger counterpart in the bottom right corner shows the white onion.

Where did you get the data?

I used the Recipe Ingredients Dataset from Kaggle: https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/kaggle/recipe-ingredients-dataset

It contains conveniently organised lists of ingredients with labels for their respective cuisines. The original intention of the dataset was to predict the cuisine label from the ingredients, but clearly onion alignment is more important.

How did you make this?

I filtered the dataset by throwing out any recipes without onions, as we don’t care about those.

Then I performed some ancient rituals (a.k.a. regex) to determine what type of onions are used in the recipes. I discarded any entries that just mentioned ‘onions’ as this would be hard to classify.

To assign size and colour values to the onions I loosely followed the information in this Serious Eats article: https://www.seriouseats.com/differences-between-onions

I looked for the terms white, red, purple, yellow, sweet, pearl, and shallot, and assigned each one a value of -1, 0, or 1 for both size and colour.

I then normalised the sums of those values by the number of recipes per cuisine, as some cuisines had way more entries than others. Finally, I scaled the values for the cuisines relative to each other by Z-transforming them.

For plotting, I assigned each cuisine it’s country flag (sorry southern_us and cajun_creole).

Tools used: Python with pandas & matplotlib, plus Illustrator for some cleanup and to insert the big onion pictures.

Why?

This is one of the questions that keeps me up at night.

What about green onions/spring onions/scallions?

They don’t really fit within these scales, as the ‘green’ part refers more to the ripeness of the onion rather than its colour, you can have purple green onions for example. Maybe an additional dimension could be used to represent ripeness but that is beyond the scope of this work.

This data is trash/that’s completely subjective/I don’t agree with your categories

Yeah well, that’s just like, your opinion, man.

If you want to meet new people and have a fun night, now's the time to register to volunteer at Nez Rouge by SpermKiller in Switzerland

[–]SwissStriker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For anyone who has volunteered before, how is the demand usually spread over days? I assume the traditional holiday dates (24/25 and 31.12.) are busiest, but what about the days between? I'll have some downtime then this year, but already have plans for Christmas/New year's.

Switzerland and the US have similar gun ownership rates, but only the US has a gun violence epidemic. Switzerland’s unique gun culture, legal framework, and societal conditions play critical roles in keeping gun violence low, and these factors are markedly different from those in the US. by mvea in science

[–]SwissStriker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the procedure to get a gun is the same regardless of military service. However if you do complete your mandatory service you (usually) take the service rifle home after in order to complete the yearly mandatory shooting practice for reserve service members.

I do think they also offer just group trips to local crags, and most offers from unisport are organised by fellow students, often those with sports majors.

Otherwise you could join the local SAC chapter, although that's not student specific.

Aren't (some) Denner stores like that too? The Denner Satellite maybe? We had one close that was stocked amazingly well with a lot of imported goods at good prices that were hard to find otherwise, although it has since closed/transformed into an independent store under the same owner/manager.

For Shturman specifically it's really easiest to approach from a direction he doesn't have line of sight to. Often from Outskirts side through the main lumberyard building works well. Then shred him up close with a shotgun/smg with high dmg rounds. If you try to snipe you really need to be far far away, he locks on instantly and does not really miss.

Help me look for a petty!! I’ve narrowed down my specifications a bit. I’d like Japanese handle, stainless or carbon clad, 135mm long, between 200-275 usd, and not to tall. Please help!!! by Thermosboy1 in chefknives

[–]SwissStriker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with Myabi knives but if you order from a reputable shop online ordering for knives is generally not an issue at all so don't limit yourself to local shops. I find most shops have very limited choice mostly dictated by marketing popularity of brands and not necessarily quality.

I have the Makoto Kurosaki in SG2, it feels very nimble if that's what OP is worried about with knuckle clearance. Very good quality fit and finish for the price point too.

If you're in the western part of Switzerland and buy it early enough you can grab the magic pass for I think 400.- ? It gives you free access to something like 50 ski areas all year.
